I'm replaying the game now and I just realized they never explain this. They're just like "Oh hey, you guys are the Warriors of Light, cuz you have the crystals!" and everyone is just okay with that.

So is it just one big huge macguffin for the game or is it actually explained down the line?

I don't think it's ever really explained. The Light Warriors kind of just... show up.

Even in the novelization, it says that they didn't know where they were from, or where they were going. :|

Details to be revealed in an especially convoluted time-travel based prequel.

Wasn't there time travel stuff? They probably... gave them to themselves, or something.

Yeah and became their own grandfathers...

Maybe they just unscrewed a bunch of light bulbs and brought them to the party.

If you read 8-bit theater, which was amazing, that's exactly what happened.

How did they appear at all? It was a prophesy, after all. They were prophesized to appear, so why the hell not teleport some orbs to them from a temple that just conveniently turned out to be the very first dungeon. It would have been much better if you grabbed the orbs when you grabbed the princess, to actually add one more to the like, 2 actual story quests rather than chase down an item.

Then it would have just been another chase down an item quest. The item being the crystals.

True but it would have been direct storyline progression rather then just chase down the item to do something for a character so they can move the plot along for you.

I actually read a pretty good fan fic many years ago that explores this concept. It is a LONG read, but I remember it being good. Not sure how well it holds up today. Anyway, here is a link for those of you who are interested:

It is shown in Dissidia.
The Warrior of Light obtains his crystal in Dissidia and the game ends with the beginning of the original Final Fantasy. We must also assume that the Warrior of Light splits into four different bodies whilst approaching castle Cornelia.
It all makes sense now...

I love how the entire strip ended up being a set up to punchline from like, the second comic. XD

>>> The crystals.
Fighter: Won it in a brawl.
Red Mage: Won it in a bet.
White Mage: Bought it on a flea market.
Black Mage: Created one through alchemy.
Thief: Stole it.
Black Belt: Got it from his grandpa (it has 4 stars on it).

This implies there is a seventh, secret, character class. Interesting....

I always found that enormously clever, and Dissidia basically ties into FF1 lore.

Except there's only the one warrior of light.
