So the PC gaming thread got me thinking - what do you want to see in a console?

For me, I want to go back to those really plug-and-play days of, say, the 16-bit era. I don't want to worry about things like hard drive size or memory cards or internet connections or navigating some sort of fancy menu. I just want to plug the machine in, plug the game in, and press the power button. Something like that wouldn't replace PC gaming for me, but I think it would have me using consoles more often.

How about for you guys?

I don't mind the menus, but required system updates suck.

Honestly, having a disc changer in the console would be good enough for me.

Okay these are both great suggestions, A+

When someone makes a controller interface that's comfortable enough for the couch, but precise enough for strategy games, the prophecies will be fulfilled, all video game discussion forums will close, and we shall enjoy video game utopia for 1,000 years.

Valve just might pull it off with their talk of a standard controller combined with biometrics and gaze tracking.

Disc-changer and full backwards compatibility are awesome ideas.

If a game console did that, plus their Virtual Console had a complete library of all their old games, it would be the best to me.

All of the above.

Also, free multiplayer. None of this Xbox Live bullshit.

A console that will give out congratulatory BJ's when completing a game.

In addition to standard features that no new console would be without, a console that:

Is backwards compatible with all previous consoles made by the same company.
Does not lock games to specific regions.
Allows me to easily create local backups of any of my saved games, while still offering cloud saves.
Allows me to freely share any saved game with any of my friends.
Has user friendly connectivity solutions for peripherals, such as standard USB cables to charge controllers while you're using it.
Has media center functionality that actually plays the majority of popular non-commercial video formats, and that will get updated when new codecs and formats become popular.

The PS2 was pretty much as close to perfect as it's come for me. Mostly because it had a stellar library.

For me:

- The PS2
- Full backwards comparability
- Easy way to transfer saves between consoles or make back-ups
- Clean and simple online interface
- An impressive games library
- Support for indie/budget developers

Not necessary:

- Media Center stuff - it's handy but I never really use it

Clearly what we need is a 200 core 4.9 GHz processor and each core has 35 logical cores.
Next is 234 PB of RAM! You just never know!
A HDD with 45 EB that comes pre loaded with every game known to man.
A default resolution of 19200 x 10800.
Anti Aliasing x512
WiFi with speeds approaching 1TB

There you have it. PERFECTION!

I think that backwards compatibility should mean that it has every physical drive previously used. It'd be pretty cool to put a cassette into ed's console.
