I've been listening to Edith Piaf lately. I love how expressive she is as a singer. You don't have to know French to understand what she's saying. It's that kind of music that goes straight to your soul.

Her music is also super old, and I had no idea who she was until last year. I've never heard anyone I know talk about her.

I also really really love Motown and golden oldies. I just love that era of history and time, and I think the music just has so much personality to it. My favourite thing use to be to drive home at 11p on Sunday nights after work (Sundays are Golden Oldies night on the oldies station) and just sing along to the songs.

What unusual music do you like?

Scott Walker's last three records. Completely bonkers stuff (e.g. lyrics about punching donkeys), but really compelling.

Sometimes I'm in a doo wop or swing mood. Other than that, I don't think I have very much unusual music.

I dunno Moonflower, most people consider listening to bad music specifically because it's less popular to be unusual :greenie:

Edith Piaf isn't unusual, she's friggin Edith Piaf!

I dunno. I listen to a lot of things that most people would probably call odd. Imaginarium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwwcTNFfKn8&list=PL2DD31BFE8F6B239A) comes to mind, as does Blå Tåget (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTAvm_Fk09M&playnext=1&list=PL18552C518A40DAAD&feature=results_main), a Swedish far-leftist band from the 60s.

She's unusual here, Pontus.

What defines "usual" here? It seems to be a bunch of bands I've never heard of. And no this isn't a dig at "hipsters", I genuinely haven't heard of most of your guys' music so I want to know what counts as "unusual" xD

This isn't meant to be a hipster thread. I guess someone can take it that way, but that's not the point of it.

It's more like, what music do you listen to that no one else you know listens to?

Oh okay. Ummm well about 80% of my library is video game music and OCRemix stuff, but I know Hux listens to all that too, so I'm not sure!

Good thread. Although this wouldn't be that out of the ordinary here, I listen to a lot of Irish trad music. Just listen to this! (http://youtu.be/rZYNldHRXzw)

I wouldnt call anything in my library too unusual... pretty much still all constitutes as music... that being said I tend to enjoy a large variety of more eclectic/eccentric/nostalgic music that diverges from mainstream radio.

Some notable artists:

cocorosie - "freak folk", and incorporates elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.
oiEqWYawpeU

god speed you! black emperor - Canadian post-rock, instrumental rock, experimental rock.

horse the band - 8-bit nintendo metalcore
tISuzGePzow

B.A. johnston - rock acoustic/sugar pop

I feel a little as if Pink Martini qualifies as unusual, which is a crime. They are a wonderful group.

This ^

I listen to tsugaru shamisen music, mostly Yoshida Brothers, I also listen to a lot of foreign music as well. If it's in another language I don't have to listen to anyone's avarice/lust/anger/sorrow etc. and can concentrate on what's going on in my life or how the music makes me feel. I'm so tired of modern, or any era, American music and just want to be left alone to my thoughts.

Don't get me wrong I listen to normal stuff sometimes but not often.

@Calliope: yes, <3 horse the band is just out their and inventive... I love that in contemporary music... the blurring of specific genres.

Was thinking of my super awesome friends band Tupper Ware Remix Party. Aside from being an awesome band name and costume/stage presence... I love their music... Its like epic, techo, funk, metal... just so much fun with them.

Not weird, simply unappreciated. They are quite good.

Probably the most unusual for me, because I listen to nothing else really like it, but I'm a fan of Geinoh Yamashiogumi. I learned about them from the Akira soundtrack, which is some pretty amazing work. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilx-wtoPsLg)

Thought of another one for me (maybe): Chiptune. God I love chiptune. Speaks to my soul in a way no other music does.

smurf DJ... this one has a familiar-sounding music sample. :P

They're a Japanese duo who do gabber/J-core/happy hardcore/otherstuff-core/idek what else electronic music. Not a lot of people I know seem to like their stuff. Too fast, too many loli/anime audio samples, too much sped up chipmunk-sounding samples, I guess. I like the fastness, though, and the heavy, pulsing bass. XD

I also like some happy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGZag6XntL4) hardcore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KJ__06kyxs).

I love Crooners like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and by extension I also really like music that is often considered Lounge Music where the girl is inb a shiny clashy dress spilling her heart out on a piano. Most people look at me weird when that music comes on in my iPod.

I like cheesey love ballads (Journey, Chicago, Peter Cetera, Mariah Carey) as well, partially cause I do and partially because I use to make mix tapes all the time in middle school and high school. I also seem to be the only person among my friends who likes Trance.

S**t Catapult, by Iiro Rantala New Trio is easily one of my favorite tunes. Most of their stuff is great. The piano stuff is fabulous, but using a beatboxer as a drummer ends up having some amazing results as well.
