I just learnt that grape and watermelon seeds are edible. Do you eat the seeds or spit them out?

Well the first time I saw someone consuming a watermelon or grapes they spat seeds out so I followed suite and never questioned it

I routinely garnish my Asian dishes with sesame seeds, and my salads with sunflower or pumpkin seeds.
