View Full Version : Why Do Words That Start With "Man" Sound So Wrong and Messed Up?

Why do words that start with "man" sound so wrong and messed up?

I don't want to get into examples that are too inappropriate (even though those ones are the ones that are perfect examples to my question), but manchild, mancub (from the Jungle Book), and Manbat (a villain from the Batman series) are some (G-Rated) examples that come to mind.

That's not exactly the kind of "man" word I was thinking of.

...if I really must post some examples, I guess I have no choice. I better not get warned for this, especially since I'm only posting the second half of the word.

Tart, thong, crush, butter, boob.

Do not worry, friend. Caught one episode once very late at night after everyone passed out (friends and I went to a bar that night). I couldn't sleep, and the show came on whatever channel my friend left his TV on. I then became agitated drunk instead of insomnia drunk.

Manassas.

Wait, that's a name of a city. Does that count?

It has nothing to do with the show (though you got me curious about it now). Just the phrase "Manswers" sounds disturbing. I just find words with "man" in front of them to sound really gross and awkward (there are some exceptions like mango and mandrake). I don't really know why words like that weird me out (though it probably has to do with how wrong those five man examples I previously posted are).

None of those are words that start with "man." What is "wrong and messed up" about using man as a modifier i.e. man boob, man crush, etc?

You should really check out Mandingo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandingo_(film))!

I vote "Manpower" because it's the only word in the list that actually starts with "man" as a base.

I did, but I was far too lazy to make a comment about it last night. And to be fair, neither is manxome.
I also considered pointing out that "manta ray" is two words, while all of the rest are only one. But again, far too lazy.

Manxome is totally a word. And I only said "manta ray" because "manta" alone just sounds like I forgot to say "ray" after it.
