View Full Version : Saddest Deaths in Video Games

So some people elsewhere were talking about why they felt that Aeris' death was so memorable and effective. As we FF fans should know, she was most certainly not the first party member to die. One theory that was thrown around was tht it was the manner in which she died that touched so many people. Tellah, Josef, and I think that old codger from FFV all died in combat. They were warriors and they died more or less in combat situations.

Aeris? She got stabbed in the back.
While praying.

Granted she was praying for a magical means to stop the villain but it's still a very different situation from Tellah or Josef or anyone else who came before. I can see why it would make more people feel depressed.

And that is what inspired this topic.

The saddest death in any video game for me is Emma Emmerich in Metal Gear Solid 2. I'm sure there will be people coming in here talking about how they felt oh so terrible shooting The Boss but I never liked the old hag anyway. Plus she was a combat veteran of the highest order. Death is part of being a soldier.

Emma? She was just this dorky teenage girl who got caught up in a terrorist incident. She was murdered by a sadistic lunatic just a short while after finally being reunited with the person who meant most to her in the entire world. To top it all off and make it even worse, she died before Hal could fulfill her final request...
"Please call me...Emma."

And then Otacon's howl of purest anguish and despair just seal the deal on making the whole thing unbearable to watch. I dread her death when i replay MGS2 just as much as I dread escorting her around.

So...that's my choice. How about you all?

Oh and since we have been talking about Xeno so much of late, Jin in Episode III always gets me teary-eyed.

Main characters dialogue at the end of Mana Khemia (Before the final boss fights) is pretty damn depressing.

Rands mother dieing in BoF 2.

Either ending of Infamous 2.

Zack at the ending of Crisis Core. And Bugenhagen in FFVII. And the ending of FFIX becomes a lot sadder when you realize it strongly implies that Vivi dies.

Goddammit I had forgotten about this. How did I manage to forget? Ugh. SO MANY TEARS.

From FF, FFX's ending and Rachel in FFVI really got to me.

In MGS4, the doctor euthanizing herself.

Not too many deaths have gotten through to me in games!

I really hate deaths in video games. Honestly, it freaks me out. I don't like deaths in books, deaths in T.V or movies, or deaths in video games. If I like that character, I will not want them to die. I grow attached to them: I don't want them gone!

John Marston. When the main character dies it's always sad. When the main character dies and you realize there's no other possible way this could have ended, and the fact that he realizes this too, makes it extra sad.

Zack Fair. You know it's coming, even up to the scene it happens. It's completely telegraphed, but that doesn't make it any less tragic. Especially since Zack is built up as a pretty damn likable character during the whole game. The way it's done is brilliant too. Best part of that game by far.

Hamlet. :(

Completely agree with Del's Red Dead opinion.

Also, when Kaim's daughter dies just when he finally finds out she's alive. :(

From FF, FFX's ending

Agreed on FFX. Never really cared for Naomi, her double crossing both parties several times never really got my sympathy.

I was sad to find out the writer of the truth in FFTactics gets the death penalty at the end. Forgot his name. There's many others in FFT, but this one really caught me by surprise.

Tatsumaru's death in Tenchu 2 got to me way back when.

PJ (your current wingman) getting killed by Pixy (your former wingman gone rogue) in Ace Combat Zero was pretty sad. Especially since the battle was essentially over.

Shinji and the MC, the MC is especially bad since you actually get to deal with the grieving from the rest of the cast in The Answer

Persona 4 Arena had Unit #024, which was a pretty heartbreaking story.

The Boss in MGS3, cause I really liked her character and I found it more traumatizing that I actually had to pull the trigger. Yet, I'll say its really when you get to the scene where Big Boss is saluting at the grave that really gets me, especially since switching to FPS Mode the screen starts watering up... The reason why E.E. never gets love is because she is obnoxious and makes you deal with one of the most frustrating parts and the low point of Raiden's mission. Even running around naked is not as demeaning as trying to escort this useless girl and then she fucking gets killed at the last minute? The scene is good but the anger and resentment I held for her is greater than any sympathy I could have felt.

But Emma was so cute and funny the way she wondered if Raiden dyed his hair and the way you could knock her out and molest her while talking to her brother over your magic earpiece with inexplicable video connection.

None of that redeems the fact she is solely responsible for the most obnoxious sequence in the entire game. Even the mindsmurf ending sequences that is mostly Kojima getting on his soapbox and ranting about the internet through the guise of a poorly done conspiracy theory is not quite as irritating as having to scare away bugs, snipe the most heavily guarded rails in the game where apparently every CIPHER goes to have their drone version of a coffee break, and having to walk at an excruciating slow pace because I have to hold her hand. Seriously the best thing about the whole sequence was learning I could knock her out and move slightly faster by dragging her unconscious body around. The Boss at least gives you an epic battle... granted you don't fight like coward and just throw on some snow camo and snipe her.

Zero's death in Mega Man X was pretty poignant, and it was even better when he did it again in X5.

Xion's demise at the end of 358/2 is probably one of the best written sequences SE has done in a decade.

I remember playing Shadow Hearts without trying to save Alice and feeling this melancholy fall over me as she passed away on the train. It was quiet and subtle.

Kaim's reaction Lirum in Lost Odyssey was pretty sad. I think it's more the idea of continuing in this life alone, burying everyone you love that makes it sad for me.

Mother/ Earthbound 3

I haven't played it yet but I heard that the main character's twin brother gets mind-controlled by the fat kid [ I dubbed him " Cartman " ] and you have to kill him to free him. So you have to kill your own Twin. If true, it sounds so sad.

And Galuf in ffV.
Oh man. I have no idea how I forgot about Galuf. I'm sorry, Galuf! :( Easily one of the saddest deaths.
