View Full Version : Great old games that people don't talk about very often

I'm gonna start with this right here:

http://www.clockworkhare.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/snes-magical-quest-starring-mickey-mouse-the-box-front.jpg

This was a godly little platformer game by Capcom that has more in common with things like Mega Man than you'd originally think. Mickey eventually gets a solid arsenal of different costumes and powerups in order to work his way through some pretty imaginative levels and boss fights. This was really an underplayed gem of a game and I highly recommend it for any oldschool platforming fan.

What are some other classic games that you don't hear people talk about very often?

I don't really have any games to add to the list. I just wanted to say that Magical Quest was one of my favorite games as a kid. I was saddened last year to pop it into a SNES for the first time in a long time only to find that it no longer works.

The only other game I can think of off the top of my head is Final Lap Twin for the TurboGrafx. I'm not sure if it is actually a good game, but I remember sinking hours into that racing/rpg hybrid when I was a kid. I should play it again to see if it is actually as fun as I remember.

Pike may appreciate this as a strategy fan:

It was a great strategy game for the NES especially when playing with someone. The ending was also really amusing when you played as the South and won the Civil War.

I loved this game as a kid, was a nice easy going open-world adventure with cute characters. It's Ufouria for the original Nintendo.

http://www.emuparadise.me/Sega%20Genesis/Snaps/General%20Chaos%20Daikonsen%20(J).png
My friend and I would spend quite a bit on this game, it's called General Chaos for the Mega Drive.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/43/RockNRollRacing2.png
Rock n' Roll racing was pretty boss for the Super Nintendo, and so was...

Biker Mice from Mars for the Super Nintendo! A lot of fun.

http://romsworld.narod.ru/Mystical_Ninja_Starring_Goemon.jpg
This was a nice adventure/RPG game for the N64, and it was quite quirky for my very-western young mind at the time, haha. It's Mystical Ninja starring Goemon for the Nintendo 64.

http://www.wikinoticia.com/images/ecetia/cdn.ecetia.com.files.2010.11.Mickey-Mania-3.jpg
Mickey Mania was also a really good Mickey Mouse game, for the Super Nintendo. Had some great music and interesting levels spanning across all the stuff that Mickey used to be involved in (e.g. Steamboat Willy, Jack and the Bean Stalk, etc.).

http://casualtygamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/spiderman-venom.jpg
This was a pretty awesome beat-em' up game for the Super Nintendo, as was...

http://juliohige.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/battletoads-double-dragon-the-ultimate-team.gif
Battletoads and Double Dragon for the Super Nintendo! Such a great game worthy of many hours of play time, imo.

Tiny Toon Adventures Sports Challenge was actually a really fun game, especially multiplayer! The other Tiny Toon Adventures game was pretty good too, both for Super Nintendo.

http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/3/6/3/1/7/1/5/Riven-106985014519.jpeg
Riven for PC has a special place in my heart, I'm still waiting for a realRiven to come out preferably with Occulus Rift! However, check out the entire Myst series as it is quite incredible - a huge and deep lore, great story archs, and really amazing exploration and atmosphere.

http://www.notenoughshaders.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/grim-fandango-melange.jpg
Speaking of favourite adventure games for the PC, check out Grim Fandango! It's incredible!

http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/34937-wonder-boy-in-monster-world-genesis-screenshot-how-to-gain.gif
I love the Wonderboy series, more specifically Wonderboy in Monster Land! It's a side-scroller pseudo-RPG for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis).

Well that's it for now, maybe I'll add more later! Hope you enjoyed my stroll through nostalgia-lane.

Mickey Mania was a lot of fun; I don't think it was on the same level as the Magical Quest games and the controls were kind of floaty but it was fun nonetheless and had some nice music.

Yes, very true. There's also:

Castle of Illusion which I really enjoyed when I was young, and they happen to be remaking (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/castle-of-illusion-out-this-summer/).

The Toejam and Earl games for the Mega Drive (Genesis) were quite fun! I'm not sure which one I enjoy more. I just saw that there was a third one, but it doesn't really look good - especially not compared to the first and second!

Anyone ever play Alfred Chicken for Super Nintendo? That was pretty cool! At least from what I can remember.

Another fun little Capcom gem! You feed cute little animals candy and then they'll somehow fuse with you to assist in each separate dream. House of Toys is/was oppressively difficult. What warped smurfing kid that Nemo dreamt about has that many spikes attached to his legos, more importantly?

http://analogmedium.com/blog/2009/03/NES-bucky-o-hare.gif

Not a very memorable cartoon, but a hell of an action-platforming ride. Think Mega Man with a few improvements! There's four levels to choose from, where defeating the boss gets another member of your crew back. You can switch between them on the fly, each with different attacks and special abilities (wall jumping, flight, super-death laser).

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/michaeljordan/logo.png

I liked this when I was nine but the novelty of Michael Jordan throwing explosive basketballs to save Chicago is wasted on this generation.

http://www.retrocpu.com/mame/images/roms/u/un_squadron_us.png

UN Squadron! A friend of mine got this with his SNES instead of Super Mario World but the two-player mode on this was a hell of a lot more fun by a long shot. Side-scrollin' shoot-em-up fun. We never picked the blonde guy though, he was lame.

The DuckTales remake is NOT a joke!

I could pick a lot of games but I'm going with Final Fantasy Adventure on the old gameboy. (Yes, I know it's a Mana game). It's easily one of the five best games on the system and I enjoy it just as much as The Legend of Zelda on the GB. Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it.

Rolo to the Rescue for Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) is very cute, and I thought it was quite cool you have to switch between characters to use different abilities (like climb, swim, etc.).

I don't care what anyone says, both Aladdin's for Super Nintendo and Mega Drive (Genesis) were amazing games. One favoured platforming whilst the other more action. Good stuff indeed.

This is another amazing adventure game. Hell, it even has Erick Avari in it and he's just a great actor! Also has voice over work from Michael McKean. The humour is quite good, as is with most Zork games (though Nemesis is quite dark) - this is Zork Grand Inquisitor.

Nah, that's not it. I really have so little memory of this game, I don't think I'll ever find it. I have already went back on the notion that you were definitely in tanks. It was possibly just army men you controlled. I will report back if I ever find it.
What kind of game was it? Action, strategy, puzzle? How did the game play? Story?

Like I said, I remember so little about it. xD However, I made an educated guess that it was on the Sega Genesis, scrolled through a list of games to appear on the Genesis and then found it.

It was an strategy type game called Cannon Fodder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Fodder_%28video_game%29). I am almost 100% certain this is the game I was thinking of, I'm going to acquire a little copy and see if it hits me right in the nostalgia.

Battlezone, man. It's a really awesome FPS/RTS hybrid.

Is there? Man I was awful at the multiplayer - used to play it with my Dad and he'd steamroll me every time.

Monster Party for the NES. It was bizarre, a bit disturbing, and thoroughly awesome.

Some PS1 games I remember being awesome but don't get much discussion 'round here:

Rascal
Jersey Devil
Medieval
Intelligent Cube (or was it Qube? cba to look it up)
Treasures of the Deep
Brave Fencer Musashi
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos
Mr. Driller

Yeah, I used to play it online when the servers were still up. I'm sure I could make it work with Hamachi or something. Would you be up for a game if I made it work?

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos

D:

I loved that game when I was little ! The camera was frustrating, but it still had cute gameplay and a nice atmosphere and a awesome bad guy.

I want to replay it now.

Though now that I'm older and that I've played more consoles and more older consoles I've noticed how " Mario " Croc is, like the big dragon/ dinosaur like bad guy and the forest, ice, warm place, final castle level of worlds.
