So our four heroes show up to save the day. Being a traditional JRPG they are most likely between the ages of 14 and 17. So how did they learn their battle skills? Did they come from a privileged upbringing where they had proper schooling by instructors on how to wield weapons, learn martial arts and cast magic? Or perhaps they came from the inner-city or similar rough environment where they had to harden up to survive, leading them to the battle-hardened state they are in today?

I ate a hot dog, but I won't vote for that.
Inner-city youth.

All four characters start the game without a single piece of equipment. DEFINITELY grew up in the streets.

They probably grew up in the streets or out in the middle of nowhere. Except for White Mage, whose robe is way too clean. She was a rich, spoiled brat.

more than likely they are orphans who pretty much raised themselves as many early FF characters did.

If they grew up in the streets, they'd have smuggled in pipe guns and ish. You don't grow up in the skreets without knowing how to obtain a weapon. lulz.

I say they were middle class from a blue collar family.
Kinda like the Power Rangers.

Why wasn't that an option?

Because there is no middle ground!

Maybe not -now-, but back when the first FF was made, there was.

"Some Other Background" could include Middle Class Blue Collar. Ha. I didn't even think about that.
I say that.

Rich kids would have magical powers that would've protected them from being transported away from their homes and thrown into some foolhardy adventure to find crystals. Rich kids are spoiled and selfish like that sometimes.

I always liked to pretend that the W & B Mages were from the Magic Academy & the Red Mage was their professor. The Fighter is the meatball jock, the Thief is from the wrong side of the tracks.
