I have recently (a few months ago) started to watch Star Trek The Next Generation with my boyfriend because he loves the show and has watched all of the episodes of all of the Star Treks ever if I am not mistaken. I have been saving monies to take him on a movie night to watch the new movie. Anyways, I am doing this to try and take an interest in his interests or something along those lines. I watched a few episodes of the original Star Trek and it was hilarious, although I don't think it was intended to be. You could make a very good drinking game out of all of the intense sweaty close ups.

I am a Star Trek n00b. I am at the start of season 3 of TNG. Tell me about Star Trek :monster:

Well for starters, you're at the point where TNG started to get very good.

Things worth bothering with - The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, the latest two films
Things not really worth bothering with - Voyager (unless the Doctor takes centre stage), Enterprise, all the films not mentioned above

I watched one Star trek movie that had the cast from TNG and they were on some planet and Picard seemed to have almost gotten a girlfriend.

Can't remember what it was called.

Also, I'm glad the uniforms got looser and that Wesley stopped wearing grandma sweaters when he started working on the bridge.

I've never actually watched a full season. Or all of one of the films come to think of it.

I saw a lot of odds and ends of the originals, TNG, DS:9 and Voyager but never a whole season of any of them.

I should really get around to it sometime.

Dude the old Star Trek movies are fantastic and definitely hold up to the test of time.

I would include Search for Spock since it's not terrible and jumping to the Voyage Home without it might leave her slightly confused as to a lot of things about how that movie begins.

WRONG! It was Star Trek: His Erection

Anyway, my parent's and I watched this show back when it first aired. We picked up on it somewhere around season 2 (dad was kind of a fan of the original, so he decided to give it a go). Since it was syndicated so quickly, we really didn't have to wait long to see other episodes, which was a rarity in those days. Couldn't just pop on the Netflix to see what you missed, you know!

Anyway, I am a big fan of The Next Generation. The other shows I have more of a floating interest in, but I been meaning to rectify that for years now.

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Star Trek is great. Pretty much all of TNG is great, as is most of DS9 and even some of TOS (if only for the Kirk/Bones/Spock dynamic, the ridiculous campiness, and the occasional moment of a young George Takei going nuts). The movies for the most part may be underwhelming or bad for newer viewers unfamiliar with the series. You probably want to stick to Wrath of Khan and First Contact for starters; those are widely considered the best of the old movies, so you shouldn't move on to the others unless you first enjoy those.

The middle seasons of TNG were my favorite, IIRC, so enjoy. :) When you're through, I'm sure you'll be yet another unanimous vote in favor of Picard as the best Trek captain.

Went to see this yesterday. It was pretty good. Didn't really make me think of Star Trek though, except for using the same names. But what do I know, I'm just a Star Trek noob :monster:.

I think they should have had George Takei dubbed over the Sulu (or whatever his name was) character.

The good TOS episodes remind me of B&W Twilight Zone episodes.

TNG is the best.

DS9 is good but the best story arcs involve maaaany episodes which was a pain back when they were originally televised.

City on the Edge of Forever is fucking amazing. I'm not sure I've ever seen all of TOS before. They show a bunch of episodes on Space up here in Canada, but I think there are at least some they don't air. I'll have to get a hold of the seasons and rewatch it from the start I think.

Raistlin
06-23-2013, 03:24 AM
I tried to watch all of TOS years ago, but I just couldn't get into too many of the episodes, and I've probably only seen about 1/3 of them. There are certainly some gems mixed into it, though, like with The City on the Edge of Forever.

Slothy

Pike
06-23-2013, 10:18 AM
Netflix has got them all so I'm using that. A lot of the episodes are hilariously cheesy and yet I love them anyway. They always end on some sort of philosophical note. It reminds me of the classic Twilight Zone episodes.

So, I watched the first episode of season 2 of the original Star Trek. Spock was having some kind of mating/wedding ritual junk going on. Then he and Kirk were stuck in a fight to the death and Kirk was all surprised like YOU SAID NOTHING ABOUT THAT when seriously that was my first question. I was actually like, hey, maybe before you accept you should make sure it isn't a fight to the death? No? Okay then. But he survived and even got excused for not doing his job as he was ordered to so everything turned out okay in the end.

I like how Kirk's facial expressions didn't match anyone elses. Everyone looks surprised and he's all :). And another point everyone looks shocked and he's just there :).

Pike
06-25-2013, 05:32 PM
Ahaha yeah I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a fight to the death so the fact that it shocked Kirk so much was funny to me.

Glad you seemed to like the episode okay though. I was watching and thinking it was kind of a really weird episode to start a newbie on.

Chain of Command .... THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS

And of course any Q episode.

There are some classics that are atop everyone's lists, such as The Inner Light, Chain of Command, etc.

Two of my personal favorites are the Measure of a Man and the Drumhead. There are others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. But TNG and Picard in particular are at their best when the show's allegorical, and those two episodes are two prime examples.

Slothy

I love both shows. DS9 got great once the writers said "Holy shit Babylon 5 is kicking our asses we gotta get it together", and they did. I think TNG's best episodes are better though, as Raist says TNG is at its best when it's being allegorical (and when it's Picard destroying people who think they can defy Picard) and some of those episodes are absolutely sublime.

I became a fan of the franchise through Star Trek Voyager when I was a little kid. I remember seeing bits and pieces of TNG and DS9 before that, but didn't get really into it until I saw Voyager. My mom was a pretty big DS9 fan back when it was on and she saw every episode, I kinda regret not watching it with her looking back. Oh well.

I enjoyed all of the series and most of the movies. I currently have TOS Season 1 and 2, the best of TOS and TNG DVDs, the first five movies of Star Trek, First Contact and the two reboot movies. Played some Star Trek Online and has one PS2 game called Encounter. Still to this day I can never decide on which Starfleet uniform I'd want to wear if given the choice.

Still watching. Halfway through season 5 of TNG. I'm not sure which one sharky will have me watch next, but I think I'm going to have a hard time adjusting if Data isn't in it.

We also got a Star Trek trivia book with like 2500 questions or something. Sharky is kicking my butt. I have only answered about 35% of the questions right so far (we are doing this in chunks because 2500 questions is a lot of questions) and most of those were guesses. But I did know a few of them!

Just saw the episode with mini-warf. It was adorable. The first few seconds I actually thought they had shrunk warf, which would have been pretty cute.

Measure of a Man is included into the Best of Star Trek The Next Generation DVD alongside The Best of Both Worlds and Yesterday's Enterprise so you're not alone there.

Picard and Riker makes pretty good lawyers.

I can't remember which episodes those are. I didn't really pay attention to the titles.

Measure of a Man is when that douche wanted to disassemble Data calling him property and they debated his rights as a sentient being.

On Voyager, the Doctor uses medical data obtained by a Cardassian (Crell Moset) who conducted inhuman experiments on prisoners of war for his research. Doing so saves B'Ellana Torres but the Doctor questions his own morality. He realizes by utilizing the medical data, he is condoning the horrible methods by which that data was acquired and thereby lowering himself to that level. So to avoid ever doing so again, he deletes all of Moset's research from the ship's database.

...and... I don't know why I mention it.

I think that episode would have come off a lot better if they hadn't made Moset such a "mustache-twirling Snidely Whiplash" villain in the end. It would have been more of a dilemma if he weren't so obviously psychotic.

And Robert Picardo carried that show, imo.
