I keep debating picking this up off of Steam but have no idea where to even start with it. Does anyone still actually play this?

I started it a few months ago but felt a bit lost. Honestly it wasn't an easy one to jump into, for me at least.

So I moved to Guild Wars 2 and have been playing that. :(

I finished what I set out to do in this game long ago when I finished the Chains of Promathia expansion in its complete form. I thought about joining the game again from time to time, but I eventually decided that it's good to reach one's goals without needing to set new ones.

Once I finished WoTG and Abyssea I just gave up. I couldn't possibly imagine a new player starting the game now, it'd be hell without a fully active linkshell to do everything for you.

Ouch!

Pretty much this. I had a brief impulse to rejoin last week until FFXIV was up--maybe try and finish up Wings of the Goddess, and all that. But the idea of doing all the genkai quests to get access to level 99 (I was level 80 RDM and SCH when I quit), complete Abyssea, complete WotG... it just sounded like too much of a hassle when most of the people I know no longer play. Throw in that my favorite class (RDM) is something of a joke these days and, well, I can't say it appeals.

Starting from the very beginning? Forget that noise.

I was playing for a while, but having to catch up to everyone just to be able to really play with them was really overwhelming. I might try jumping back in later when I have more time, but for right now I don't have time to spend running over huge landscapes to talk to one guy and run back.

It's been staring me in the face on Steam for €19.99 for a while...

I just caved and purchased it...

Ouch!

How is RDM a joke?
It's just what I've heard from everyone who still plays. There are so many other sources of refresh now that even with Refresh II, RDM has no purpose there. Nobody can hold a candle to WHM as a healer anymore, and SCH is a far superior back-up option in comparison to RDM. Nuking is a joke compared to BLM and SCH (and now GEO).

Most of the abilities they've given to RDM since the level cap increase are things like temper where they've tried to bring back the melee-RDM which never really existed in FFXI, and it just doesn't really work. RDM has just become an undesirable class for most situations. It enjoyed it's time in the sun, and I enjoyed playing it back when RDM was the go-to job, but that time is past.

A lot of those mages all sub RDM though, for the sake of versatility, spikes (for non-BLM), decent heals (for BLM), and the ability to cast Refresh on yourself outside of Abyssea, where it's not needed in the slightest. I sub RDM under WHM any time I'm not on the front line.

In fact, outside of Abyssea, RDM still has a solid role as a support class. I haven't seen much use in the new Seekers content, but maybe players just haven't experimented with RDM very much there yet.

Also,

I keep debating picking this up off of Steam but have no idea where to even start with it. Does anyone still actually play this?Almost daily. Well, technically DAILY right now because I can slip fifteen minutes into chocobo raising. Haven't missed a login for 36 days now. But actual play? Probably a proper four days a week, I put anywhere from two to six hours in.

Shiva, if you're interested.
