View Full Version : Words you say in your own dialect/accent
Inspired by the Whipped Cream thread, where I said that I say it "whoop cream."
In Missouri we call tissue by the brand-name Kleenex. That right there is stupid, but I have always called it Kleenax or "clean axe." I get made fun of for it anytime anyone hears me say it.
What things do you say in your own special, stupid way?

Pretty sure everyone everywhere calls it that...

Crawfish = Crawdads.
I've uh.. started saying a lot of "Mexican" words in with my English..
Like Chonies = underwear/panties/whatever.
Chanklas = sandals
Manzanilla = Chamomile (I actually -forgot- what that word was in English even though I knew exactly what it was).
I swear I know I'm not Mexican. I swear.

Tsinelas for sandals. Filipino thing.
I've lived in Texas for 15-ish years but I still don't say "y'all" and I refuse to. I also don't say "coke" as a general word for "soda," but tbh, my group of friends don't for the most part, either, so I don't know if that's still a thing they do here. XD

I say y'all.. and ain't. and "ain't got none" and stuff like that.
I say what each thing is in regards to soda. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite - I use the actual brand name, though I still say soda sometimes. My grandmother used to say Pop.
No, no. I'm not talking about what local dialects you use, but your own special brand of language.

In New Brunswick, if you do not know somebody's name, their name becomes Buddy.

lulz I know. But since I'm now the only person I know & am around that speaks Spanish... It's my own language. XD ... If that made sense.

I don't know. I don't usually learn that I say weird things until I speak with someone outside of my local dialect.
Smartass answer: I say all words in my own accent. /smug

I call remote controls "the buttons". I do not know where this stemmed from or why, but I get an inordinate amount of shit for it.

Sometimes we call subs "hoagies" over here. :P
- hella (a large amount)
- totes (totally)
- p-much (pretty much)
- word (i can agree with that)
- legit (sounds good)
- tacs (tic-tacs)
- mobile (moving from point A to point B)
- cheap spot (buy some beer)
- tubes (bandwidth)
there's probably more that don't immediately come to mind.

Personal dialect? Well then... Some of my friends and I use "shadowcrane" as a verb to mean being sneaky or crafty. It stemmed from this big inside joke where I was basically the office ninja/superhero (named Shadowcrane) who made origami cranes out of post-its all the time and either saved or destroyed people (I guess that makes me a villain, too, depending on who you ask).
And when we play the board game Pandemic (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic): "Jesus" - the medic role; can be used as a verb. Becomes "Super Jesus" after we cure a disease. "Part-time Jesus" - the quarantine specialist role.
Additionally, half of what we say, in response to other things, are inside jokes we've accumulated from other friends.

All of them.
Mais, pour l'exception.

Pretty much. This was brought up in an episode of Corner Gas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB9ZT6oW8Lk&t=3m38s)...
This is not a Hacky Sack. This is my new footbag. Hacky Sack is a brand name like, uh... Kleenex. People call it Kleenex, even if the Kleenex they're using is some other kind of Kleenex.

Danielle rather hilariously calls it a 'Plonker'.

Oh! I say totes & hella! and "Hellz yeah!"
I call motorcycle cops "Motorbike Cops" in a really redneck southern accent. Or sometimes I call them "The Law" - -that- is a very redneck thing to say. "I'ma call the law awn yew!"

I have my own bizarre language. Only Del Murder really understands what the smurf I'm saying. Sometimes it's little more than squeals and babbling.

This hasn't been my experience going out-of-state, but whatever. You guys have missed the point of my post, regardless. I still say it differently than other people.
I got curious and did a search and apparently Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries both have "Kleenex" in their dictionaries now xD

Oh Lord. x)
It's like when I went to the UK and they say "hoover" for vacuum.
On the subject of genericized trademarks and things you say, I use "photoshop" as a verb for any sort of photo manipulation regardless of what software was used. I use "google" similarly even though I search with DuckDuckGo.

Also I call everyone bro. Guy, girl, I don't care, if you're cool you're a bro in my book.

sidebar: i generally hate the use of brand names used in place of a generic term. even if you are using a Kleenex brand tissue, a Xerox brand photocopier, or searching the internet with Google
in my laziness i tend to slur some words. one that i've noticed that i do a lot is if i'm ordering, say, a coffee. I intend to say "Could I have a large coffee" and it comes out as "kdiavuhh large coffee" or something like that
saying hella is hella lame, brah

If anyone was actually interested in seeing how their regional dialect stacks up within the US, this is really pretty cool (http://spark-1590165977.us-west-2.elb.amazonaws.com/jkatz/SurveyMaps/)
