Whatever happened to these wonderful mascots? I was such a big fan when I was a child, and I always looked forward to visiting McD and collect the figurines. When did they expire? Only Ronald seems to be the only relict still intact.

They were called fry guys.

They were canned after Grimace tried to show some kids his mcnuggies.

I believe the actual story is that the artist they hired to create the characters were never paid so when Mcdonalds started making cartoons about them and putting them everywhere the artists sued McDonalds and won, and rather than paying the royalties they had been awarded to keep using the characters, they just dropped them.

That's not even close to being true. They were used in commercials and their images were found in McDonalds for years and years. You don't see them anymore because their not really a cool marketable item anymore. I mean, they were kinda cool in the 80's. What more could you expect?

Looked it up, you're right.
That's what I get for not checking what I hear.

I still think the Hamburgler could be marketable if they made him more modern.

That's a lot of restricted intellectual property.

In 1993 a man wearing a Grimace costume indecently exposed himself to me.

20 years later I am Psychotic, Administrator of Eyes on Final Fantasy. Coincidence...?

I keep wondering when they're just gonna get rid of Ronald McDonald too because he stopped being cool a hell of a long time ago and he's just creepy

I think he started out creepy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwb9W51j7fo) to be fair.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Ronald McDonald commercial, or even mention of him in a McD's.

Whenever I eat somewhere that requires you to write your name on a bag or such, I always use Hamburgler.

I still see him in commercials all the time, it shocks me because I keep thinking he's about at retirement age as far as mascots go.

I had no idea they still ran Ronald MacDonald in commercials and stuff. Crazy.

I loved Hamburgler, and Grimace was pretty cool too. Didn't really care about the rest.

Yeah they're trying to make Ronald look all healthy and stuff. "LOOK! WE HAVE APPLES IN OUR HAPPY MEALS NOW!"

Absolutely terrible. I remember when you'd get awesome little toys that lasted for years. :mad2: And while we're on the subject remember when you got those in cereal boxes too?

When I was a kid, we had a neighbour who didn't really socialise with the rest of the neighbourhood much who one day declared that he was the guy who would get all the McDonalds toys that didn't get given out / sold during promotions. And he noticed there were loads of kids in the neighbourhood so he asked if we wanted any (I think he was moving out and wanted to get rid of them or something).

Oh man, seriously. Boxes of them. Giant boxes full of almost every McD's toy for the last five to ten years. It was amazing. I must have been about nine or ten. Incredible.

That guy was a hero to the entire neighbourhood that day. xD

The little TMNT figurines were the best ones I can remember. I might still have a couple at home (NZ).

I was at Burger King the other day and they make you choose between a toy and ice cream. WTF? :irked:

you realize that as adults you can acquire your own toys and ice cream in larger quantities and better quality, right

Firstly it's the principle of the thing, secondly I'm pretty sure I don't count as an adult

As a child I found there was always something a bit unsettling about the McDs mascots. They're right in the Uncanny Valley of cartoon characters, and I'm not even talking about the fucking clown, that's an entirely different ballpark of creepyness. I mostly liked McDonalds for the toys of other cartoons (mostly Disney) they gave with the Happy Meals.

A few years my friends and I threw a pool party in which I drunkenly wandered around in the pool with a hamburger in my hand, desperately trying to keep it dry while shouting I AM THE HAMBURGLAR into the night. The apartment complex was somewhat less than amused.
