So earlier this year, Neo posted his favourite 100 games (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/147620-greatest-games-personal-list-neocracker.html), and I was inspired. It seems maybee, shion and sharky were equally inspired and they have also posted (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/150182-maybees-top-25-games.html) lists (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/149931-top-75-games-list-sharky-shion.html). I've been biding my time but I've finally got bored enough to complete my list and am ready to start posting it.

First post...

Oh yeah, Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress

I always enjoy a game that has two colons in the title. In fact, these types of games are probably my favourite out of all of them. In this one particularly though they are put to excellent use. I don't think that Armok should have slaves. I understand this game is not based in reality but really no society should utilise slaves. They should at least be given payment for their services. Maybe they should introduce some form of minimum wage.

The God of Blood is fantastically represented, I feel. Being a God, I think he is very God-like in this instalment. Much more than in God of Blood Chapter 1. Obviously the blood theme is prevalent in how he goes about his duties. His God duties.

Dwarf Fortresses are always fun. Lot's of small people running around is just ripe for comedy. It makes you wonder whether the dwarves built the fortress themselves as they are quite clearly vertically challenged. I assume they brought in contractors to assist them with the more difficult aspects of the build...

...yeah, I've never even heard of this game.

Better kick on and finish this, eh?

2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
PS3, 2009

http://media.giphy.com/media/KL4QGTnI4u27S/giphy.gif

God damn I love every single character in this game. Especially Chloe. For... reasons. :shifty: But yeah, Tenjin? Awesome. Sully? Awesome. Nate? Awesome. Elena? Awesome. Chloe? Obviously awesome.

It was so, so hard to pick which of this and Dwarf Fortress should get my #2 spot, but I've gone for Uncharted 2 because, while DF definitely has the better replay value (although I have played Uncharted 2 at least three times), Uncharted 2 is a complete game that started, developed and finished in a near perfect way which is just so freakin' hard to find in a shooter game. The dialogue is perfect, the gameplay is extremely fun and the collectables never felt like a chore but a challenge. The multiplayer of Uncharted is massively underrated, too - I played it only for a short while due to not really knowing anyone else, but the wall climbing aspects make it incredibly fun. Someone sniping from the edge of an area? Sneak up the wall and pull them down to their doom. Problem solved. I never liked games that didn't let you climb (Halo 3 etc) so yeah, to Sony for that one.

Overall, though, it's the single player. The insane drama, the banter, the wit, the charm, the puzzles, the everything. This is a very, very complete game. I can't remember a bad thing about it. I'm sure there were a few, but the good things are so plentiful that they make me forget the flaws. This game was fun from the start through to the finish and I felt completely satisified with the ending - a rare thing in video games, for me at least.

I still think that Uncharted 2 is my favourite game from Naughty Dog. Even ahead of The Last of Us. Purely for the fact that it's probably the most fun I've had in a game since I was a kid. I was basically a young, intelligent, good-looking Indiana Jones that got to have sex with with ridiculously hot women.

The game was just perfectly crafted with some phenomenal stand out moments. This was present in Uncharted 3 also but the overall package in 2 just hasn't been topped yet. In fact, I'm gonna bust through it again when I get back from France. Can't wait!

Loony BoB
08-18-2014, 05:38 PM
Yeah, I felt Uncharted 3 took it to such extremes that I was just going "Okay, Naughty Dog, now you're just being silly." It was more Forrest Gump than Indiana Jones in U3. Uncharted 2 was just perfectly balanced. Tough game to make a sequel to because of that, though.

Bolivar
08-18-2014, 06:57 PM
Uncharted 3's only major crime was that it tried to follow up on Uncharted 2, when Naughty Dog had already accomplished everything that could be achieved with that formula and cast. If they had released it after Uncharted 1, it probably would have still won all the awards that Uncharted 2 did.

I agree the pacing is the real difference though and it's telling that the gameplay director went on to make The Last of Us after shipping Uncharted 2, along with other important leads. Now that those folks are behind the wheel again with Uncharted 4, not to mention Corinne Yu as technology officer, I can't imagine how good Uncharted 4 is going to be.

The Vita installment was also really well done, I definitely put it above the first game and maybe even the third.

1. Final Fantasy VII
PSX, 1997

http://www.finalfantasykingdom.net/7/seto.png

I first played Final Fantasy VII - or rather, watched someone play it - for about five minutes at my neighbour's place. One of his friends brought a bunch of games over and he played that to show it off for a short while, but as we were wanting multiplayer games it was quickly turned off in favour of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. It would be a couple of years before I would see it again. I was renting games and thought I'd give this one a try as I was looking for a bit of variety.

I hopped in and it took my interest pretty quickly. It was different to other games I'd played. I'd played WRPGs, sure, but the characters and story were always so bland. This one focused much more on the storytelling. In the end, I would be captured by it, immediately looking up all the information I could online about it. Discovering sites, forums, etc. I would quickly be playing the previous FFs and buying FFVIII. I had found a new genre and I loved it.

FFVII, though, still managed to outdo all other games in this genre, and every other game I have played since. It offers me everything. I have multiple things I can do in the game, all of which I got enjoyment from. I liked the materia system, which firstly gave you the conundrum of "Must save up for all this materia", then "Which materia should I put on each character?", followed by "Oh man, which materia should I link?" and eventually "Which materia should I grow!?" Just one small part of the game and it had so much done for it, particularly when compared to some other systems in the FF series which rely on "Learn skill, retain skill forever, done."

The characters were all decent at minimum and some of them remain my favourites of the series. Tifa is probably my favourite character of all time, with enough revealed about her to know her personality and story, while still retaining a lot of mystery given how much she seems to keep in her head. Red XIII is also an excellent character and a brave step into the non-humanoid form by Square Enix. I wish there were more non-humanoid characters. The only gripe I have with Red is that after he learned about Seto, he became a little wusspuss. But such things are forgiven when in battle he is still badass. Barret, Cloud, Cid, I loved these characters too. Aeris I did not like much at all. I'm one of the few who celebrated in their head when she died. Yes! Take that! High five to Sephiroth! I'm a bad person, aren't I? :erm:

Chocobos are awesome and no other game did chocobos as well as FFVII did. Chocobo breeding, chocobo racing? Hell to the yes! And then golden chocobos that can take you to the far reaches of the world, too, for amazing reward!? Even better!

The story itself had the right kind of twists, the ones you don't generally anticipate, but also that worked and didn't cheapen the overall plot. I found the story quite confusing when I first played it, mostly because it was the first game that I found myself having to really pay attention to such things. Most dominant games - a la Air Combat, Doom and Gran Turismo - required no focus on the story whatsoever, it was gameplay with some vague plot tacked on. This (and Resident Evil to be fair) was different for a gamer like me.

In the end I've probably said way more than enough boring drivel here - I love FFVII. It's a timeless game and every time I've replayed it I've still found it enjoyable. I haven't even beaten all the Weapons after all these years! It's weird how much I can play the game and just enjoy the start to finish. Endgame is a bonus that I never went out of my way for - but it just goes to show that a game I love more than any other has something I can still go back to and check out should I want to. It also says a lot that you can play this game and do a crapload of stuff and still have more to do.

Overall just fantastic.

Huzzah! #1 over! I'm done! It's only been, what, 15 months?

I actually thought it was going to be Final Fantasy XIV, unless that was listed already and I missed it.

I can also go back to FFVII at any time and still enjoy it as much today as I did... seventeen years ago.

Jesus Christ, it's been seventeen years since this game came out.

Loony BoB

FFXIV was included in the list "as of 1.23". I'm not sure where I'd place the most recent version. Probably pretty close to where it was then, though. The full list is in the first post of this thread, behind a spoiler tag. I'll start to think over adding some games in that I've played since deciding on the list soon, as things like "37.5" or whatever. Will first need to remember all the new games I've played over this year and a bit...

Oh, ye of little faith. It's not a major part of the list so I'm just gonna slap 'em on.

13.5 - The Last of Us
35.5 - Final Fantasy XIV (as of patch 2.38) would move it ahead of the Zoombinis.
38.5 - Rayman Legends
43.5 - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
51.5 - Assassin's Creed II
57.5 - Assassin's Creed
58.5 - Borderlands 2
84.5 - Gone Home
96.5 - Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (at a push - really tricky as the pros were great but the cons were also massive, so... hmm, tough one).

See the intro on the first post for Zelda. :p The same can be said for MGS - just haven't played much MGS at all. I have played some (but never for a great deal of time), but yeah, quite a long time ago and nothing that wowed me at that stage of my gaming life. Perhaps I'll get into them someday.

I've never been a huge racing game fan, which is pretty well reflected in the games that are on the list. I've played a couple of GT games, but I prefer NFS and Kart/Wipeout games when I hit the races.

And thankya!

That's the re-release date on the PS, obviously. BoB just put the wrong system on the wrong date or the wrong date on the wrong system, w/e. I mean, have you seen the list, and you expect him to know his games?

Nice list, btw, Boobs. I was kind of hoping you were going to subvert our expectations with the #1, but then you would have had to put FF7 somewhere else on the list, and that would ruin it.

Good on ya finally finishing. Now start on another list.

I haven't even played 100 total games. :p

I approve of Borderlands 2 being there though. Not the best plot ever (I mean, it is pretty decent) but it is a great game to play with friends. Me and Mr. Carny played through it together and had a great time.

I know you were all desperate to know the latest update on this. Numbers on the right are the change since the original list was completed.

EDIT: Forgot a game. Fixed.

I'm proud of my appearance on this! Particularly as I'm not sure you did the endless desert bonus content either where you fight some optional side bosses...

xD Probably not. I have a massive backlog of games so I tend to just smash through base story and then move on to the next one at the moment. Maybe I'll get around to the extra stuff someday! But then, I've not done some extra content in FFVII either, which is my fave game of all time, so who knows...

Now. If the FFVII remake is even better than the original, what are the chances that it replaces the original on the list?

Good question. I won't exclude any game from potentially becoming my favourite ever until I've played it, so I have no idea.

I never got around to writing up my top 100 though I made the list about 5 years ago. And yes Death of a Fansite also made the list. It is objectively great. :)

Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe came out very recently, might get it bumped a little higher on the list :kakapo:

I wish they'd just update the original with the new content so I didn't have to buy it again!

I've not played the Ultra Deluxe variant yet, so sadly no higher on the list - but with all the new games coming out, it's honestly very hard to see a game go upwards. Some games dropped so hard this update that they flew off the grid entirely (hi, Goldeneye 007, you did not age well and it was so bad it even ripped up a lot of the nostalgia).

A few new games all over the list including the top 10. Minecraft got a massive bump because I have no idea why it was down that low when I've had so much fun playing it with friends every few years. FFXIV gets a deserved bump for the later expansions. Frog Fractions, Gauntlet, Rocket League and Magicka all get big drops as the nostalgia also wears off for them, although the fact they're still on the list says a lot. There are definitely more games off the list than on it now. Games that couldn't cut the top 100 include Streets of Rage series, Valheim, Borderlands 2, Civ II, inFamous, The Sims, Overcooked, Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit, Destruction Derby, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, Prison Architect, FTL, Diablo, Northgard, World of Warships, Thea, Stellaris and The Binding of Isaac amongst so, so many others.

I also merged a few more games together on the list because I just can't or don't differentiate them in my mind anymore (RE1 & 2, Warcraft RTS, XCOM, Subnautica, L4D + B4B, DOS, AoE, Arkham).
