So earlier this year, Neo posted his favourite 100 games (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/147620-greatest-games-personal-list-neocracker.html), and I was inspired. It seems maybee, shion and sharky were equally inspired and they have also posted (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/150182-maybees-top-25-games.html) lists (http://home.eyesonff.com/general-gaming-discussion/149931-top-75-games-list-sharky-shion.html). I've been biding my time but I've finally got bored enough to complete my list and am ready to start posting it.

Games that won't be in this list: Most Nintendo games. I grew up on PC, SEGA and Sony. You're not likely to find much from Nintendo on this list at all, so expect zero Zelda or Super Mario Brothers games. I don't know nothin' about Kirby, I'm not a massive fighter game fan and, well, you know that favourite game of yours? I may not have played it. Bite me. Also, well, let's just say that my cow is most definitely cursed.

Games that will be in this list: I've not played a thousand games, but I like to think that I've played a large variety and that my list will give a diverse grouping of games from all kinds of genres because of that. Also, it'll include games covering a range of over 30 years (going by release dates), some of which are older than I am. Any consoles listed merely shows which way I played them the first time, so don't read too much into that. Also, in some cases I've felt that a series of games was better represented as a group rather than a single game on the list, while others might be split. That's just the way it is because I can do that, so ner to anyone who thinks it's not specific enough.

So... shall we?

100. Dig Dug
PC, 1982

Dig Dug is amazing. I remember playing it as a kid and to this day, I adore the music more than anything. It was a rather simple game and yet it was never the same for me each time regardless of the simplicity. I could just keep playing and playing. I remember, being young, I found it quite hard at first to get anywhere with it. I think it may have been the second game I ever played after PacMan. I dunno... I just have otterly fond memories, again particularly due to the music, but it was great all the same. This one is Nostalgia 101, and makes the list almost entirely based on that, I guess. I otter play it again sometime. :p

You know, I actually have played either this or a clone of this. It's been so long though, but I distinctly remember playing a game that looked like that based off the google images. :p

If you're anything like me, you'll remember the music better than the look of the game. I played it in monochrome so it looks nothing like the images shown on Google for me, but oh man, that noise when you die? It still rings through my head whenever I die in a video game to this day.

To be honest Dig Dug should really be up in everyone's Top 25. I spent about 45 minutes playing it yesterday.

45 minutes playing a 30 year old game. That's staying power.

Loony BoB
06-25-2013, 03:53 PM
Maybe if I'd played it more recently I'd have put it higher up, but it was rough enough to have to cut so many games I've enjoyed over the years from the top 100 entirely. Some choices on my list might surprise some people. In the "why is that on this list" way.

NeoCracker

I may need to play it again actually, if it was the game I'm thinking of, it's been freaking ages since I've touched it.

Edit: And don't worry BoB, my opinion of you is low enough none of it will surprise me! :monster:

I've thought about making a similar list for myself, but I am really bad at ranking games in this way. It's generally a matter if I really like the game, thought it was just okay, or absolutely hate it. Outside of those 3 categories, I could never actually choose which of the games I really like would rank higher than the other games I really like. Oh well.

Also, Dig Dug is awesome. I haven't played it in years, but I would play it almost every day for like a year when I was a kid. I need to play it again.

I can tell this is BoB's list because it's one game at a time starting from 100. For the top 20, he'll be making us predict which game comes next on the list, and then revealing the "winner" over three posts.

...actually, I had completely forgotten about both Dig Dug and SkiFree until I saw Dig Dug just now on this list. They are totally different games, and SkiFree is like 9 years older... but somehow, Dig Dug brought back all these ancient gaming memories from ages past. And among those, one nostalgic memory shined brighter than the rest. And that was SkiFree. Oh gawd! 99. Commander Keen (series)
PC, 1990-1991

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/7/1/1246454949648/Keen-4-005.jpg

I loved these games. The more I look back at them, the more I see how much they influenced various things I really, really love in gaming. I played them at my godparents' house which I think was a farm somewhere in Wairarapa, and Commander Keen was a must-play for me alongside other games such as Crystal Caves and... well, I forget the names of the others at the moment. The Commander Keen games were easily the best. I loved that you could travel from map to map instead of just being 'teleported' between them. I loved the pogo stick. I loved being able to play the levels in the order I chose. It just seemed so great. A traversable overworld. I didn't know those words back then, it was just walking around a map, but these days they apparently struggle to get it into modern Final Fantasy games. Go figure. Anyway, yeah, I loved them. I can never remember much about them until I see the screenshots and the videos, but every time I watch one of those videos and see those screenshots, I remember everything I see. It was just a really, really fun game.

98. Operation Neptune
PC, 1991

http://ts4.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4933969295116419&pid=15.1

I just really liked this game. You're a little sub and you go around solving math/logic problems (both of which I was good at from a young age, perhaps this helped) and saving the world from a biodisaster. It has little tidbits of story to it which were enjoyable enough, the levels are a little Ecco-esque and overall it just played very well for me when I was a kid. I'd probably find it a doddle now and perhaps a little boring, but maybe it'd make for a good timewaster if anything. Just good value entertainment with a little smarts involved (well, a little smarts for me at that age, anyway xD).

Three PC games so far. Don't worry, Neo, you'll probably have played the next three games. ;)

EDIT: No surprise that Operation Neptune got zero replies. x) It's one of the least known games on my list, but perhaps not the least...

97. Road Rash II
MegaDrive, 1992

http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4524671847891776&pid=15.1

It's a bike racing game where you hit your opponents with clubs and chains. I don't even need to say any more than that. I don't remember if there is actually anything more to this game at all, really. It's a bike racing game where you hit your opponents with clubs and chains.

Yeah, this was one of my early games. I did quite like the story and puzzles, even if the levels themselves could get really, really hard by the end. Along with the Super Solvers games, it was one of my old favorites for edutainment titles when I was little.

Google been your friend!

Skitchin was made by the same team as road rash and featured roller bladers instead of bikers, and you could hang onto the back of cars to gain speed, at your own peril.

Road Rash and Skitchin may have been early pioneers in bringing rpg elements to the metagame of other genres.

96. FreeCell
PC, 1978

http://www.mojandroid.sk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/freecell_2.jpeg

If I was picking games for just how often I play them in the past month, this would be number one. I played it a fair bit - along with all those other Windows games - on PC some years ago, however it's on my Android phone that this game has really shone. I adore it. I play it on the way to work, on the way home from work, when I'm just chilling listening to music in the bedroom or just before I go to sleep. It's simple yet complex, it has endless replay value, it's generally a rather quick game to get the hang of although I don't feel I'll ever 'master' it as there's always some game I'll come across that I won't finish for quite some time. But more than anything, it's like a meditation thing for me... it allows me to relax effortlessly and it passes time, but not too much. When I'm stressed for any reason, this is the go-to game for me at the moment.

Road Rash II was an awesome game. I remember using the guy with the bat - baseball bats always felt like the appropriate weapon to wield while riding a steel horse.

Also FreeCell! I currently have a 100 game winning streak on FreeCell, it's the best game preloaded on PCs. Yeah, even better than that pinball game that used to be on my old desktop!

Jezzball is better than both for me. Don't get me started on Pipe Dreams. :D But nah, for me, FreeCell is just much more relaxing than Minesweeper (since everything is right there from the start, no guessing whatsoever) and I never really got that into Spider Solitaire.

WildRaubtier
06-29-2013, 12:36 PM
If you're guessing at Minesweeper then you're right not to be playing it, sheesh.

Well, except for all those times I finish an expert game with a single mine left with no discernable way to distinguish it from the single non-mine square left. But I like to think of those games as metaphors for life.

xD That's one way of looking at it. I do like Minesweeper and you're right that it's not all guesswork, but there is always that moment when you just don't know. FreeCell is simply my preference when it comes to relaxing myself, and any game that is about guesswork and life or whatever isn't what I want in order to distract myself from all the guesswork life throws at me. ;)

Yeah, same here.

And Minesweeper is only about 1% guesswork. :colbert: Guesswork until you hit your first good number (usually only takes a few turns) and then on very, very rare occasion you'll get one of those sections of two where it's a 50/50 chance. But the vast majority of the game is just counting and logical deduction. Great game

Oh man, Road Rash! I think I played a version of that for the SNES or PS1. Riding a motorcycle and swinging a deadly chain around was just too much fun.

The first move you make in Minesweeper is the only guesswork in Minesweeper.

lol Freecell. You crack me up man.

WildRaubtier
06-30-2013, 03:54 AM
Incorrect: The first move in minesweeper is ALWAYS safe (windows versions, at least). For proof, max out all the fields in a custom game and then see how many times you don't hit one of the ten safe spots on the first go.

Raistlin
06-30-2013, 04:25 AM
Yeah, but the first move doesn't necessarily give you any other information, especially on high settings. Meaning you then have to make what is effectively another first move. So there's a slight element of luck there, but it's not a big deal, because if you have bad luck, you're only 2 second into the game and can easily restart.

95. Mortal Kombat (series)
MegaDrive, 1992-1997

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVRPtmn-4ps/TOLxFnESccI/AAAAAAAAA4A/LSeOvd5OXJ4/s1600/mk2_ps3_soon.jpg

This is the only outright, run-of-the-mill fighting game in my entire list because I'm just one of those button mashing types. Despite that, I really enjoyed this game in my youth (I've ended the series at 1997 intentionally as that's when I stopped playing it) and adored the characters. I could still pull off a fair number of the special moves which I never bothered really doing in other games, and I'm sure I beat the single player campaign too. But yeah, a good game overall and definitely something I enjoyed when I was something like eleven years old. xD I wouldn't mind playing the newer games at some point, but I just can't find myself ever spending money on fighting games because they just don't have much appeal to me overall. More of a game I'd play with a friend for an hour after school than a game I'd want to buy. My favourite one was probably the second one.

You can't just put an entire series in as one entry! That's totally cheating, unless you judge every series on the entire series' merits and include them all as a single entry: Final Fantasy included! Don't even try and say, "oh, but every Final Fantasy is different" because there are differences between the Mortal Kombat games too! (And, plus, you only listed a section of the series. Golly, pedantic. Loony BoB you crazy cat.)

But at least Mortal Kombat is awesome.

PS regarding Minesweeper: I like to turn up the size and mines to max, so every move is basically a guess. I've maxed out at getting two safe spots before exploding :(

I've done it for games that I felt are so similar that I can't specify any one game that I felt was that different to the rest. I'm not going to list every incarnation of Football Manager I've played, let's put it that way... I honestly don't remember all that much about the MK games and if I had to seperately list them then I'd sooner just remove them all from the list altogether.

I don't remember how far I got into this game but I never cared. I could play it over and over, even just the first few levels. It was just an amazingly fun game. It was designed to amuse and entertain. I mean, anyone who has played it should know what I'm talking about. The enemies, the music, the items, Toejam & Earl themselves. It was all great. Also, I'm a massive sucker for exploration and this game was ridiculously wonderful for that. Also wonderfully ridiculous. Yay.

The different player perspectives in TJ&E 1 and 2 make it hard to choose which was the better game. Played a ton of both but the second was more... funky.

It's sad that nowadays when a pastiche like TJ&E comes along its lauded as some ephemeral stroke of genius but TJ&E was just one amongst many games with a lot of soul.

This is here mostly for the times that Dan was over and how much epic fun we had. He'd pretty much always win but I didn't care, we would flood the game with all kinds of wrestlers in a Royal Rumble or something and just go nuts. Dion back in NZ and I were more evenly matched at the time and we had great fun with this game, too. I've played the single player a little but it's not really my thing, for me this is all about the multiplayer. Anyway, yeah, great game series, lots of fond memories and if/when Dan and I meet up again I may actually bother to play one of the newer ones. :smash:

Another game I missed putting on my list, though I'd probably rate it lower then you did. A lot of them were pretty fun though!

I once made a giant mime, as thin as possible and as tall as possible, with Kane's moveset. XD

He also had bell bottoms, but since the game didn't actaully have those as an option, I just made his ankles really fat so it looked like Bell Bottoms.

92. Chip's Challenge
PC, 1989

http://invisiongames.org/forum/index.php?act=downloads&do=imgss&id=22674

I'm pretty sure this is the last old-school Windows game on my list, don't worry. ;) Chip's Challenge was endless puzzley goodness. Well, not exactly endless, but when I was around twelve years old the sheer volume of levels available meant that when I had to go to my Mum's work with her on a school holiday, I would not get bored. That game is quality. The level designs were great, for a Windows game it had a lot of good graphics, and it almost had a little RPG feel to it. Best of the old Windows games? On this list, yes, I think so.

Whoops, forgot to keep this updated. >_> Clearly Chip's Challenge has fewer fans than I anticipated, though. For shame, EoFF. For shame!

This is one of the more addictive games out there, and certainly something that can suck up a lot of time. I've seen people lose themselves in it for days! I don't know that I find it as addictive as some other people do, although I will say that my favourite part of it is definitely creating a home. This little gem was given to me as shareware and I adored it. Going around in a spaceship, earning credits, upgrading shields and weapons, shooting up bad guys, protecting other ships, zooming between solar systems... all run of the mill stuff. What I loved in this game was the story that went along with it. Everything was fun in this game, really. There were times that I charged into situations that were most certainly beyond my ship's capabilities, and it felt great going back later on and kicking butt with my improved ship. I dunno. I just really liked everything about this game and every time I've gone back to playing it, I've still found it to be really fun.

This list is starting to become "Good times with Dan" at the moment, and this is a killer game for us two. There's something special about cricket games, the completely obscure things you can manage to do with them and the insanely stupid ways you can get a really average person to become the best person in the entire world. 87. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
PC, 2006

http://ts1.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4620398063584588&pid=15.1

This game I loved and got annoyed at in equal measure. When I first played it, it was great. Then as I leveled up, and I started going through all these motions... it got really drab really fast. It wasn't until I replayed it years later with it modded to Hell Oblivion and back that I really got to feel this game's greatness. My biggest annoyances were the enemy leveling system, the lack of variation in the areas/regions and the terrible Uncanny Valley stuff it had going on. Once I could get past these things it was a very enjoyable game and I'm glad that I got back to it eventually and played all the way through the storyline.

Bolivar

Oblivion was one of those games where I looked down on it for years like how could that be any fun, snobbishly playing my jrpgs. But when I finally tried it on pc it was a pretty special experience. All the gameplay elements introduced in the beginning had me feeling like I could do all these for a good 30 hours or so. But when I stepped outside that sewer was when I knew this was going to be something special from the beauty and realistic topography in the land. It gave off the wonder that there were hundreds of adventures to be had out there and when I was in my 60th, 70th, 80th hour of gameplay I was consistently surprised with just how imaginative and unique the quests were. I don't know of any game with the kind of depth and breadth of fantasy quests to match Oblivion but I'm really hoping Skyrim hits the same mark for me. It seems to be an Elder Scrolls curse that fans of one game don't like the immediately next installment.

I also really have to give it up to the dungeon design. The traps and puzzles and door switches and vertical layout made me really feel for the first time in a video game that I was inside a dungeon straight out of D&D.

Lastly, the mods really are something special and make this game shine as BoB pointed out. Not only can you take its beauty even further, as far as your rig can go, but huge sections of imperial provinces have been added, some of them highly rated like Valenwood, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, High Rock and Hammerfell.

PC, 1993

http://tasvideos.org/images/gameresources/jetpack/level_60.png

This game was one of the most enjoyable and replayable games I ever played at the time it was out. Actually, it's possibly the most replayable if only because it was probably the first to introduce me to level design. I would design all kinds of levels to challenge myself or just to amuse myself. The Christmas version of the game was epic, too. Best Santa game, so awesome. But yes, just simple gameplay. Pure, wonderful, simple gameplay.

Ultima Shadow

When playing Oblivion, mods is the way to go. I think I ended up with so many mods that they took up more space than the game itself. It was modded until it was no longer anything at all like the original unmodded game. But holy crap was it awesome, and I probably spent close to two hundred hours playing those mods that game.

After finishing the main game, Shivering Isle and many awesome mod-quests (which were far superior), I remember filling the awesome, badass-looking "flying castle" (also a mod) with NPC copies of myself (through codes), all in different outfits. And then I had them all fight each other in one massive battle.

...jumping from the flying castle was pretty fun too. You'd fall for about 20 sec before hitting the ground.

This list is pretty much 100% subjective, I don't give a rat's arse about being objective on it. That made it easier to put in gems because I could just throw out some other games. Also, I was happy enough to merge a few games into one such as Commander Keen and Football Manager. If I kept them split the list would be quite a bit longer.

I think I was only able to remember about 300 games when I was putting my list together. There are a lot I'd love to include but simply couldn't, but in the end I'm pretty happy with my list. I still chop and change the stuff that's higher up on the list from time to time, though, so it's hardly a concrete thing.

I saw an article or blog post about the level design in Sonic 3 a few years ago which went into quite a bit of detail for why it's not nearly as good as Sonic 2, but I can never quite seem to find it. Suffice it to say, in games which are first and foremost about running really fast, there was no shortage of game mechanics which directly conflicted with that. Not stuff that just stopped you for a second if you screwed up, but things you absolutely had to stop for. Far more than there were in Sonic 2 where you could typically keep moving in one direction or another just about all of the time. It was also just a confused mess of superfluous game mechanics in general though.

WildRaubtier
07-21-2013, 03:23 AM
The levels being better designed is true only if you're approaching them from a "go really fast" angle. 3 has a far greater focus on exploration, such as more alternate routes to the end of each level, and Tails and Knuckles not just being "sonic as a different animal" and having abilities that make them far more mobile, etc. Most levels have areas where you can go as fast as you can, but bring a lot more to the table than just that.

I guess the main difference is the (literal) linearity of levels? eg. I can't think of a single time you ever need to use the left directional button in 2 (except for the Wing Fortress) in 2, but conversely, I can't recall any level in 3 where you wouldn't need it to get through.

As for the art design of levels, 2 doesn't compare at all! 3 is full of subtleties, such as these, for example. (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3_%26_Knuckles_chronology_and_endings)

I don't know, man, when I went back to 2, I kinda felt like it wasn't just a straightforward 'all speed, no challenge," game it's kinda been pidgeon-holed as. It had its fair share of moments where you had to stop and pull switches as well, like the vines in the jungle mine stage and who can forget the swimming?

2 is absolutely ridiculous on the nostalgia level, but 3 & Knuckles is the better game.

I'm not saying Sonic 3 is a bad game because it's very good. But to me it always felt like more of a traditional-style platformer whereas Sonic 2 was much more about GOING FAST.

If I want a traditional-style platformer I'll play Mario, not Sonic.

I simply have more fun when I play Sonic 2. It's straight-forward, no-nonsense, and had the best music in the series.

This is one of the few FF's that I played to finish after reading hype about it and still enjoyed it, which isn't a common thing. I really liked it - the vast amount of minigames (even if I did get annoyed at Hot & Cold for a while), the wonderful worlds, the solid characters and the various little moments in the game made this thing. I was still never captured in the way I often am with FF's where I feel drawn to keep playing non-stop for as long as I can, so it's the lowest FF that actually made the list based on that reason alone. A good RPG. I don't know if I'd play it again any time soon, but maybe years down the line when I'm bored I might have another go at it. Oh, and I generally don't get all that caught up in romance in FF's, let alone games at all, and the ending was entirely predictable, but the way they did the running scene right at the end was excellent and I got the feels from it, which is a rare thing indeed these days.

Well I think you've reached the first problem with Neo's list, where you list a great game and find a good place for it on your rankings, but it's so high that there's literally dozens of games where we have to question if you really think they're better than FFIX.

FFIX could be a candidate for best game of all time for me, but the 4 or 5 FF's it's sandwiched between were all more innovative and refreshing.

I think if I had played FFIX earlier than I might have perhaps enjoyed it more, but instead I'd read half the story in various posts (although I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of major events had not been spoiled for me, yay).

As for games that will be ranked higher, oh, I definitely know some games I'm going to get lambasted over are in the remaining 83 games. I mean, even if I listed those games at #100 I wouldn't be surprised if people would look at them on the list and say "Wait, what?" over. I just enjoy games a lot easier than most people, I guess, and that means I can get past what some people consider to be major flaws. Perhaps it all comes down to the moment I played some games, how I felt in my life at that time. Who knows?

FFII had a story and characters (notably the guest party member ones) I could enjoy, Pike, but I just really didn't like the battle and leveling system. It's as simple as that for me.

Actually I think what Bolivar said is part of the reason for feelings. Most of the FFs I enjoy have been pretty innovative and mixed things up, whilst FFIX was a game that set out to appeal to the people who loved the first few FFs. If you didn't play those games until much later, because they were never even released in your territory, and you started with VII, IX is possibly going to feel like a much less interesting and innovative game. Lacking nostalgia appeal the game loses some of its charm - how much is probably going to vary from person to person.

Although that theory does not explain why I later went back and did play most of the earlier FFs and enjoyed them thoroughly.

http://d15uu3l1sro2ln.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/tomb-raider-2013-wallpaper-9-600x329.jpg

This is actually the only main Tomb Raider game I've played for more than five minutes, although I have played a large amount of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (I think that's right) and Danielle has a copy of Tomb Raider Anniversary or something like that. I forget exactly which. Either way, this was my real introduction to Lara Croft as a video game character and I thought she was a fantastic lead. I expected the game to play a lot like Uncharted, and to some extent it did but it still allowed itself to be very unique so I never really found myself reminded of the Uncharted series at all. The side characters were generally alright, the combat was good and the story worked well enough. I liked the leveling system which reminded me a bit of Far Cry 3, and I liked the exploration value and environments. The moment I finished the game I didn't feel compelled to carry on with doing anything further, but I wouldn't be surprised if I pick this game up again someday and at least have a vague shot at getting Platinum.

EoFF seems to be the only place where it's considered the "BEST FF/RPG/VIDEO GAME EVER!!!!!" It was enjoyable, but didn't really grab me as much as several other FFs.

PC, 1991

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CFki0EhXMOk/TIk2h-n9oII/AAAAAAAAA5Q/Byc2kyfQGqE/s1600/duke2.jpg

I think I played this through to completion about four or five times when I was a kid. It was a badass game, it played fantastically. I can't remember anything I didn't like about it, although obviously being a 1991 game it didn't have as many features (including that third dimension) that many games today have. I actually liked the first game more than any of the other games in the series because while Duke was badass, he wasn't as immature as he was in later games. Or at least, it wasn't as focused on that immaturity (focus on gameplay wins for me). Don't get me wrong, the immaturity could be hilarious at times, but... yeah, I just prefer the original.

EDIT: Finally got around to adding pictures to all the games. Getting decent gameplay pics for the more modern games that aren't high resolution screenshots is surprisingly difficult.

What a massive thing in the history of gaming. For me, this is one of the games that started it all, and I enjoyed every moment of it. There's a lot that while searching for the above screenshot I totally forgot about, and I'm really gutted I couldn't find a well-sized DeathCam shot because that's one of the things I forgot and it brought back even more great memories. From the hidden Pacman level to shooting up Hitler to finding secret walls behind endless secret walls just to reach a treasure trove... this game encouraged a mix of exploration, fun and skill and it rewarded all three. I should probably give it a go on one of the really high difficulties someday - I honestly can't remember if I ever did the hardest difficulty and survived.

This game has to be played in splitscreen to be truly appreciated, and with people who don't take their games too seriously. Danielle and I fit this perfectly. The game was enjoyable from start to finish and we were never bored. My favourite parts were always the slow-motion 80's-esque bravado scenes where you go back to back and shoot the hell out of absolutely everything around you, making use of a blatantly ridiculous number of weapons and explosive barrels. Great fun. Also, this is one of those games I put in knowing full well that fans of the earlier mentioned games were going to ridicule me. I don't care! Fun is fun!

Destruction Derby was pretty much the best game I got to play on the PlayStation for the first year or two. I'm not saying there weren't better games during that period, but that I didn't play them. This game was awesome. It helps that I adored stock car racing when I was in NZ (and I expect to get back into it when I return). But yeah... just driving around like a nutter, smashing up other cars... there's something extremely satisfying about it. I didn't care for the racing aspect, it was all about the Destruction Derby itself for me.

Probably the best racing game I ever played that didn't involve weapons and power-ups. Although I think as a cop you could still call in some kind of assistance, like spikes to ruin tyres or whatever. Either way, this game was great, me and my neighbour would play it for ages. All the different race/pursuit modes I can remember were really enjoyable and the tracks were great and varied. The cars were, of course, glorious. The gameplay in general just really worked, and while it was good with one person, two people made it utterly fantastic fun.

I'm honestly not sure if I played NFS2, but if I did sadly it will not be on this list. There are only a few more games on this list that have any kind of racing theme and none of them will be in the top 40. Racing games aren't the kind of games I play all too often and, as you can see by the ones I've mentioned in this list so far, they tend to need more than outright racing. Destruction Derby, Road Rash II, NFSIII. All so far have the ability to bugger up your opponents in some way, and that theme will continue.

I remember Destruction Derby! I didn't play it much, but yes, the racing part was not what the game was for.

Need for Speed III was actually the racing game I played the most on the PS1, and I think is the first of BoB's list that would have almost certainly been in my top 100 too. :p My friends and I played that thing for hours. We even found cheat codes to unlock some ridiculously fancy and fast cars and enjoyed absolutely blazing through the different areas. I think NFSIII was the first in the series to introduce the cops, and that added an additional fun level of gameplay over your typical PS1 racing game. I never played much more of the series after that, though I did play a bit of a more recent version on a friend's PS3 a couple of years ago, which was pretty fun.

Pike: were you talking about NFSII or NFS: Hot Pursuit 2? I don't think I ever really played either, but they are different games.

One of my fondest gaming memories was from DD2.

There was an absolutely TITANIC crash involved probably 80% of the cars on the track on some race or other. I noticed some car was hilariously spinning around like a top, balanced on its front, but I was trying to navigate the wreckage and get back in the race so I paid it no more mind.

Until a lap later, when I came to the same place - and found the car was still spinning in place.

Best bug.

I also see Pike and I share NFS taste because 2 was the best in the series, largely because of all the insane cheat vehicles that were in it. Racing as a fallen log? A t-rex? An old-timey wagon? Get in.

Another great multiplayer game, but also great for single player too. I would play this at my mate's house every morning after getting dropped off there before school and after school before I got picked up. It was awesome, and I have it on my PC to this day. It's a bit like an advanced version of Tetris and it can keep me playing for hours. Getting an insane score is very satisfying in this game, as is slowly cramping up the space for your opponent in multiplayer. Just another great game, really. The basic mode is already fun enough, but the extreme mode is just plain awesome and leads to all kinds of tactical decisions.

http://www.civfanatics.com/gallery/files/1/succg_china_war.jpg

Civilization is one of the few series that I don't favour the first game I played. I played Civilization (the original game) years earlier and while I loved it, Civ II was that far above and beyond Civ that I was blown away. This game set such a standard... my favourite part (and this goes for the entire series) is always exploring the discovering a new world. The war part is a bit meh to me, I just love growing, researching... I would play with just a single civilization in the world if it wasn't so boring doing so. I was never great at the game, though, and never bothered with higher difficulty. I just want to enjoy the gameplay, so I tend to stick with Chieftan or whatever it was that was just above Chieftan. Also, India was always my fave starting Civ.

Only played Civ IV and I got to the point where all the squares are developed and I'm just making decisions as to what im researching next every few turns. Some NPCs reached out to trade culture but I didn't feel like it. I didn't really know what to do next and I left it at that. I guess I just don't "get" these games or I shouldve just grown pair and attacked somebody.

I also messed with Civ III for a little bit that was kinda cool.

I agree that Civ II was probably the best of the series, but I also agree that it wasn't the best grand strategy game ever (still Master of Orion II!). I never really liked combat in the Civ games either.

Crash Bandicoot is one of the best platform games ever, especially once you hit the 3D era. Crash might not be as famous as Sonic or Mario, nor did he have as many moves as many other platformers, but in sheer gameplay value these games were great and never let me down. I particularly loved the polar bear riding levels - they were great! :D That little thing is adorable. But yeah, not too much to add in at this point as it was just a game of pure fun, no major gimmicks to highlight or anything and it's been quite some time since I played them, too.

One of the few games on this list that I never actually finished (of the ones that actually can be finished, anyway). I hope to eventually, but I want to get the FF's finished first. Anyway, I really loved a massive amount of things about this game, particularly the storytelling in the little stories (dreams?) that pop up from time to time. The story of the game itself is also pretty interesting to me, and I liked the characters well enough. It's hard to completely judge this game without having played it through to the end yet, but I really enjoyed it enough to warrant it's position on this list.

I thought Lost Odyssey was fun to play, but that was mostly due to a lack of new JRPGs to play at the time. It really isn't anything special, but the 1000 Years of Memories is just so interesting to read that it made it worth it.

71. Gothic II
PC, 2002

http://www.gothicrpg.pun.pl/_fora/gothicrpg/gallery/2_1270801136.jpg

While this wasn't my first WRPG, it certainly was the one I was most interested in for some time. I don't know what it was that made me like it so much - perhaps it was how good a mood I was in at the time (second holiday with Mandy), perhaps it was how I learned a chunk of German words through it (watching her play the game, she'd translate every word), perhaps it was the interesting story or the gameplay, I can't quite place it. But whatever it was, I just really enjoyed playing this game for hours on end, days on end after I got back to the UK. I would often just spend that time doing completely non-quest-related things. I'd be out exploring, testing and just generally walking around to see what enemies I could and - more often than not - could not kill. Seeing how I could wrangle my way through a quest in non-obvious ways, which there often are. But yes, anyway, good game!

70. Star Control
PC, 1990

http://sc2.sourceforge.net/screenshots/melee1.png

This is a game I played non-stop for very long periods of time when I was a kid. I did my best to master all of the ships, although there were really only a few I could win almost any fight with. Me and my neighbours would play against each other and it was always a case of something new - never the same fight each time, we would intentionally pick weaker ships to see if we could manage, etc. I liked that you had a team with strong and weak ships and had to tactfully consider which you were going to use first. Anyway, great game and - as is seemingly becoming a trend - I really want to play it again. Especially the galaxy colonising/mining thing which was awesome. You know, I think someday I'm going to invest in an old PC I can install all these DOS games on so I don't have to rely on DOSBox.

I would play these games with my friend Jared back when I was in intermediate school, which means around 1994-1995. I was, in order: Adam, Max and Dr. Zan. My favourite was Max, he was an unstoppable force. :D Dr. Zan was alright as well. If I couldn't play any of those three, I'd opt for Blaze because, well, she's a hottie. xD Roo was pretty great too, once you unlocked him. Simple side scrolling beat'em'up games, but very well balanced and enjoyable, particularly multiplayer.

I don't include anything after 2003 because I haven't played 'em yet. SimCity 2013 doesn't really appeal to me for rather obvious reasons. :p The one gripe I have with this series is how often the game crashes on me, even the old ones on my high end machine. I have no idea why this is, but it really pisses me off. I've had about three or four PCs that I've played this game on and the series clearly doesn't like this player. Which is a shame, because this player loves the series. I like to start on a massive area and grow at a fast pace. It generally works out alright for me that way. Not much else to say on it, really, as for all it's complexities, it's simply an enjoyable city builder for me, and that's a great thing. :)

11 series in total are listed in this thing, most games are listed seperately. I consider it a compliment to the series in some ways when I can list them all together, as it says that all the games released in that timeframe were excellent. I tried to avoid it where I could reasonably say that one of the games was that much better than the others when I played it, or when the games were so different in my memory. But ugh, if I listed all the games seperately, the various series would probably have pushed everything from around #80 down off the list entirely.

EDIT: And Skyblade, I hope you wouldn't list all the Final Fantasy games together. While a series in some ways, they really aren't a series at all - every game is notably different in almost every way.

67. Wipeout HD
PS3, 2008

http://gamingsnack.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/WipEout-HD-Fury-PS3-600x300.jpg

I first want to be specific: My experience and therefore opinion of Wipeout HD includes Wipeout HD Fury, the expansion pack. If you own Wipeout HD and don't own Wipeout HD Fury, I don't even understand what the hell you're doing playing video games. Anyway, on to it...

I liked the previous Wipeout games - I loved this one. This game was made for HD, it just oozes quality. I could play this game with or without the weapons, it's just that much fun to zoom around the incredible tracks (to some pretty awesome music) let alone shoot the hell out of your opposition... but shooting the hellout of your opposition is where the game shines and what puts it this high on the list. I loved Eliminator matches most of all if I recall correctly. There is little more satisfying than getting a roller/quake/whatever you want to call that weapon, heading to the finish line (where vehicles recover their health), turning around to face all the weak opponents about to get their HP boost just to see me facing them, then letting rip and watching them all explode and my points shoot up. If this game had four-player splitscreen it would probably have jumped up about ten places further, too.

EDIT: Perhaps worth noting that this game (sans Fury) is probably the best value-for-money racing game on this list. Can't remember how much it costs with Fury, mind you. I'm fairly certain it cost me less than Ł20, and if that's still the case I would say it's still the best value-for-money racing game on this list.

66. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
PS3, 2012

http://cdn2.gamefront.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/deus-ex-big-lebowski.jpg?cda6c1

I keep wondering where this game would have ended up if it had a decent ending. I don't care how anyone justifies it, for me that ending was absolute and utter balls. I like to think that this game combined with ME3 taught game developers a valuable lesson when it comes to What Not To Do When Making Video Games. Either way, take that part out and you're left with a fantastic, enjoyable game with a great story and an interesting world. I was mostly stealth because silent takedowns or whatever they were gave me the most experience, but once I got pretty much all the experience-based bonuses I was really interested in I just started going back to my traditional style of "run in and shoot the hell out of everything". It was very satisfying, and I'm tempted to play the game again in such a style at some point in the future, if I can be arsed. I've never played the original Deus Ex and it does interest me because of this game, however I can add that to a very long list of games I feel similarly about. :p When I'm retired, oh man, I am going to play the crap out of a 70 year backlog... anyway, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, great game.

I will note, however, that it captured me more in appreciation than pure love. For example, I loved Jump 'n Bump more than this game. But sometimes the quality and standard of a game overcome love to the point that you can't help but feel it deserves a higher place, and therefore at #66 it landed and felt right.

Playing it for the first time now and yeah its definitely something special. I interviewed the game director before it came out (Interview: Augmenting Deus Ex: Human Revolution With Game Director Jean-Francois Dugas | Warp Zoned (http://www.warpzoned.com/2011/03/interview-augmenting-deus-ex-human-revolution-with-game-director-jean-francois-dugas/)) and its cool to see how everything he told me about the influences from Metal Gear and Blade Runner and Robocop really come through. The dialogue, sleuthing, and action are all very well paced, something a lot of WRPGs struggle with in my experience. I'm really looking forward to whatever else this team does, not sure if they're working on Thief or not.

So, I obviously object to a lot of this list. But since it came up, Gothic 2.

Gothic 2 is, with respect to its now clearly-dated graphics and polish, probably one of the best 5 games ever made for the PC. Of course, Gothic 1 is nearly as good, and Gothic 3 is possibly even better (post-Community Patches, because G3 was not very good on release, but became good).

That world was so good. Gothic 3 did 'freedom' and 'openness' in a way that something like Oblivion (its contemporary) could only dream about - specifically, in a way that doesn't make everything seem generic and hollow, and with legitimate challenge and reward. Gothic 2 was basically a slightly more focused (but still very open) version of that.

I don't really understand why you wouldn't just play it in English, though.

Loony BoB
08-12-2013, 09:08 AM
I did play it in English far, far longer than I played it in German - but given I was very interested in learning German at the time (having a German girlfriend will do that to you), I liked sitting with Mandy and trying to learn as much as I could while playing the game (since she translated it all for me). We probably spent a good few hours doing that but I started my own game - in English - afterwards.

Seriously. Anyway, I really enjoyed the thread so I started to try out the game, and I really enjoyed the game, too. It is brutally unforgiving but once you get the hang of what works and what doesn't, you can make it further and further before you are inevitably annihalated. What's not to like about that!? Seriously this game is one of the most masochistic games I have ever played but I'll be damned if it's not incredible fun (and absolutely perfect fro some great Let's Play threads). I don't think I ever beat this game. I'm pretty sure I'd remember doing so if I did, so I must have just given up after the umpteenth attempt. xD

Well, there are a few things wrong with Civ 5, but I forgive it because I will do anything to get away from stacks of doom, which were always by far my least favorite part of any Civ game.

Today I learned that, for some reason, X-COM isn't called that outside of North America. Even they should call it X-COM, though, given that all the other games in the series related to it are called that.

The new X-COM game is reasonably good also, except for the CONSTANT game-crippling bugs.

My main issue with Civ V is that one unit per title doesn't really work right on a map size that small. Like, if it was 100 times bigger it might work. But this is mostly me griping as a wargamer who goes full on grognard with her strategy games.

Anyways yeah X-Com (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) should really be higher on the list. And yeah the new one is pretty fantastic.

64. inFamous
PS3, 2008

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100428124848/infamous/images/c/c2/Warren.jpg

I found it rather hard to place this game because I know I enjoyed it a lot when I played it and it's one of those rare non-Uncharted/FF games that I hit Platinum on, but at the same time it's not a game I fell in love with but simply a game I really, really enjoyed playing. I feel I could have placed it anywhere from 40 to 80 and still not felt it was quite right, but it ended up here after a lot of messing about with rankings for a good hour or so (a few games did this to me - everything below #20 tended to require a lot more thought).

The story was great, the gameplay was fun (if at times a little repeptitive, which I mostly put down to environments), the characters were good enough. I loved the various abilities, particularly those that weren't a cheap imitation of standard weapons (ie, shoot, grenade, etc). That means riding the railworks and power lines, gliding, the force attacks and so forth... they were where the game caught my attention enough to seperate it from the many other games out there at the time I played it. The collectables were great fun for me, too, because I'm a whore for that kind of thing when I'm playing a game I really, really like.

But yeah, I would say this is a game that doesn't get an A+ in any area, but doesn't get lower than a B anywhere, either... which is probably why I never found any reason to put the controller down until I had done everything there was to do in the game.

Jiro
08-13-2013, 10:49 AM
I don't know how you hit platinum on this game.

Honestly.

I did it and afterwards I wanted to kill myself, it had some of the least enjoyable shitting challenges. It is up there alongside FFXIII as the least enjoyable max challenges I have ever done. Fucking shards.

It's a pretty great game (all things considered) and I had fun but I don't think even KotOR and Fable can top how blatantly black and white the morality system is: "Should I share my food with these people... or should I murder them with lightning?" That was just bullshit xD

But yeah, inFamous was alright. It was nice to have a sandboxy type game and a superhero type game that wasn't same-same - just sucks that Prototype was probably the better of the two released at the same time.

Loony BoB
08-13-2013, 12:16 PM
Eh, the shards may have been a bit annoying when it comes to tracing them but once I found an online map of where they are, I was happy to hunt down which ones I'd missed. =] Didn't take anywhere remotely near as long as it took me to do FFXIII's Platinum, that's for sure, and probably didn't take me longer than Uncharted 2/3's Platinums either. I found the challenges trickier than the shard hunting - the challenges were seriously tricky at times, especially after I'd alread 'finished' the game, meaning I had to hunt down the correct enemy spawn areas.
