I like to associate music with certain seasons (autumn music is the best), and I need a new driving mix for the summer, especially since I'm going to Delaware for the 4th and that will involve at least 3 hours in my car each way (not accounting for traffic). So I'm going to make a summer mix.

Some music I associate with summer:

Lana del Rey. all of her stuff has pretty blatant summer imagery in it. her music makes me think of relaxing on the porch on a summer evening with a cocktail in hand.
Animal Collective. Strawberry Jam and Merriweather Post Pavilion primarily (Summertime Clothes on repeat please)

There's more but I don't want to go too comprehensive. What music do you associate with summer, and why? (aka rob is totally being lazy about ideas for his mix)

Summer music for me will always be some good relaxing house music. Combine that with sunshine and beer and your in heaven.

Nakashima Mika - GLAMOROUS SKY is a good road trip song
Krewella - Alive (I've been into that song lately - especially the acoustic version)
Murphy Lee - Shake Ya Tailfeather (yeah, I went there)
Britney Spears - He About To Lose Me, Candy From A Stranger, Amnesia - just 'cuz. They're all pretty sweet.
Will Smith - whatever that Summertime song is. For obvious reasons.
Do or Die F/Twista - Do U? - We'd bump that ish all day long when it came out
NB Ridaz - Sexy Lady
Backstreet Boys - The One .. IDK.. Another good road trippin' song I guess.
NWA - Straight Outta Compton .... It makes me giggle when I bump it in my car cuz of all the stares I get.
Aikawa Nanase - Everybody Goes (English Version), Heat of the Night - I love Aikawa Nanase
Anything by Blink 182 - Esp. The Rock Show & Everytime I Look For You & Reckless Abandon
Utada Hikaru - Deep River - the video is so pretty. It's more mellow though.
Te Necesito - I have no idea who it's by so I can't find it, but it's sweet.
Mariano Barba - Aliado Del Tiempo ... Reminds me of this guy I was kinda dating in Phoenix. It was his favorite song
Climax - Mesa Que Mas Aplauda ... It makes me giggle. The video is pretty raunchy, though.

That's all I can think of for now. Most of what I listen to is lately is pretty dark & violent in general (South Park Mexican, Brotha Lynch, etc)

Dario G - Sunchyme

Oh and When The Sun Goes Down - Kenny Chesney & Uncle Cracker or whatever his name is.
Brad Paisley - Me Neither ... We'd rig the jukebox to play that song -all- day long on repeat @ Logan's. Drove our co-workers nuts.

Had to throw that in there.

Gangnam Style, because it was a big deal last summer and it should be a big deal EVERY summer.

"Walking On Sunshine" is the worst song ever created by anyone.

When I think of good summer music, I always think of this track:

Rilo Kiley, Sublime, The Postal Service (because I think about wakeboarding).

Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes is the perfect summertime song.

I generally associate more poppy/cheery/light-hearted music with summer, and calmer/deeper sounding/symphonic stuff with winter. Not that I won't listen to any kind of music any season, but some things just seem more apt for the season.

A few shuffled examples:
God Help The Girl - God Help The Girl - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAZOmYUh6wY)
The Dirty Heads - "Lay Me Down" feat. Rome (Sublime) - Executive Music Group - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP08d4ruZ0g)
Rilo Kiley "The Frug" - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSO4Y9ygPIw)

Taylor Swift's 'Red' album is very summer-y, whereas her last one was very Winter-y.

My playlist for last summer had on it...

Call My Name - Cheryl Cole
Part of Me - Katy Perry
Wide Awake - Katy Perry
Where Have You Been - Rihanna
Only Girl - Rihanna
Starships - Nicki Minaj
Take Care - Drake and Rihanna

Also, the Chili Peppers. Don't know how I missed them.

It wasn't a careful selection, I just put on shuffle in my library and picked out a few at random!

Usually prog in the vein of The Mars Volta or Pink Floyd does has the summer feeling for me. Especially Frances the Mute.

In terms something more recent/different genre the Gorillaz album Plastic Beach really had a great summer vibe for me. Oh, and a lot of early 90s rap too.

I love putting on Tom Petty, Credence Clearwater Revival and other classic rock for road trips in the summer.

Driving mix ?! I'm with Mullet on this one. You need some classic rock ! Indie rock and garage rock are also good choices.
The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, The Doors to name a few
