So this franchise has become a bit poop in recent years but back during the days of 1-3 it was a stellar survival horror series.

What's your favourite Silent Hill game? Favourite character? Favourite spoiler moment? Favourite music? Which game didn't you enjoy?

Discuss all things otherworldy here! Beware of aliens and puppies.

I've become a big Silent Hill fan recently. So far I've played through 1, 2, Shattered Memories, and most of 3.

My favorite so far has definitely been 3, and my favorite character has actually been Heather. Next favorite character might be Kaufmann just for how many times I quote his "Thank God, another human being" line.

SH4 looks like trash and Downpour I thought was pretty interesting, albeit a weak entry. I love the joke ending of Downpour.

Now I am going to promptly leave this thread before I have anything from SH3 spoiled for me.

I have only played the first one and it was pretty great. Got 2, 3 and 4 to get through at some point. I was sad that I didn't get the best ever ending for that game, so I'll have to play it again to do so. :(

Like most I enjoyed SH2 the most for the multitude of reasons that has been listed over the years. And like most, I basically only enjoyed the first three games.

There was a series here. Now it's gone.

SH2 was the pinnacle of the entire franchise.

I prefer the one with Heather and the song that accompanies the opening sequence of that title.

I loved SH2, but SH3 was what got me into the series the most. Yamaoka's music is stellar and 3 has my favourite soundtrack of the lot. I found the story and ideas behind 4 brilliant but, like many, the gameplay made it so that I never finished it

Love 2 - Inner Fears and 6 - Downpour. James and Murphy are great, Heather, too but I hate 3. It was somehow okay but the way the disturbing atmosphere was expressed was simply too much for me. Heather and her story - okay but that's it. I like the much disliked movie WAY more.

3 had the one bit that shit me up the most. The mannequin room.

Sephiroth
07-07-2013, 01:43 AM
It had a way more disgusting room. The absolute no go for me. Even Angela's no go-sidestory in Inner Fears was more abstract and less present.

smurf THAT MANNEQUIN ROOM

SH3 is the first game I played and I adore the soundtrack - one of the only game soundtracks that comes to mind that I'd be in favor of listening to on it's own. My vote for favorite goes to SH2, though, because everything about it is just so perfect. So many good memories of me and my best friend playing SH3 in a lightless room and scaring the trout out of ourselves for no good reason. SH3 is undoubtedly scarier than SH2, but I prefer SH2's storyline.

In agreement that the franchise has gone downhill lately. I tried to play The Room and became absurdly frustrated, shutting it off after an hour or so of game play.

There was a site I found about all the crazy ultra-deep meanings about the smallest details of these games and how they connected with the characters that I will have to look up when I am not on my phone. I spent hours reading about the observations and was completely fascinated at how in-depth they were.

also pyramidhead for best character :colbert:

I was going to say 2 until I remembered that Japanese dog ending. Teh heck? O_o

Interesting that the dog ending is what freaked me out and not everything else in that game.

It's a shame that Pyramid Head's design changed after the movie came out.

Played through 1-4 and the arcade and SH2 is still the best for me. I seriously didn't expect the bit with James and Mary. And I can't get over the room with the red siren thing and the pyramid head is chasing you around the itty bitty place. Good thing he was holding the gigantic cleaver and couldn't really catch up. 4 was scary though because of the real-time events even when you pause the game. And Room of Angel is seriously one creepy song. At least Theme of Laura was kinda invigorating :/

Think about that for a second. He survived Silent Hill twice. And voluntarily stayed there instead of leaving the second time.

I watched the movie and it was excellent.

As far as games, I haven't personally played but my friend Steve had it and I watched him play and it was creepy. I remember the hospital was scary and I think the school?

I would have to play this game during the day surrounded by people :P

Yes but the second movie was the biggest train wreck I have ever seen and perhaps the biggest disappointment as well. :stare: Even Jon Snow's beautiful babyface couldn't save it.

Time to get lost in their world again :)). I actually found this extremely long (and I mean novel-long) article regarding the psychology of Silent Hill, including the background on the myths that spawned the game. A little overwhelming at first but man, oh man, did that expound on the SH universe so well. I'm gonna try to find the article if I can :)

I find the silent hill world both haunting and captivating, and as many nightmares it gives me I can't help but love it.
The symbolism, the character development, the combat (HA, just kidding) and the artstyle are truly something else.
I havent checked out any of the later games past 3 though...

Silent Hill's 1-3 are the best ones. You can get the original on the Playstation Store if I'm not mistaken.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend the HD Collection if you have a PS2 and can get copies of 2 and 3 for it. The HD Collection had a ton of issues, including things like fog being so poorly done in 2 that it might as well not be there. Some places you could literally see the edges of the levels from the pics I've seen. I know the PS3 version got an update to fix some things, but I don't think the 360 version did. So if you can't get or play the originals, go for the PS3 version at least since it's better than the 360 version.

Thatt was 1 year ago. It has a patch for PS3. It still is a bit annoying but a) I never had any real problems before the patch, maybe once, I don't know and b) the real nuisance are the controls anyway. And they do exist for PS2 as well. I know what I am talking about I have both plats and Silent Hill 2's is a whore with those controls.

The only game in the series I've played is Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which I liked in some ways, but disliked in others. Admittedly, I feel as though I only really enjoyed it because I knew the plot twist going in, and was looking at things in a different way because of that. The chase scenes felt like they were really unnecessary, and I would've enjoyed the game more if I was just exploring, and taking in the atmosphere. The chase scenes were jarring, but I know that they played a role in the story ultimately. I can't really say for sure without having played the other games, but I feel like they could've expressed the story they wanted to without trying to make it Silent Hill. :P

I also feel like I probably missed out on some sort of subtext involving the characters since I don't know what role they played in the original game. Eventually, I'd really like to at least play Silent Hills 1 and 3, since I spoiled myself on Silent Hill 2's plot, and also because Silent Hill 3 just looks the most interesting to me.

How can you expect your daughter to save you Harry when you couldn't even save me? You left me there!

All I wanted was a hug.

Also, I was just thinking about this - but for a game released in 1999:

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/y__vmNYTTrE/hqdefault.jpg

The emotion conveyed in that face, in a 1999 (well probably 1998 when it was being made...) FMV... astounding!

Emulate it, man!

I would, I just don't like messing with emulators from the PS1 generation and onward. If I remember right, they get a little more complicated after that point, and I don't know what I'm doing. I also just really hate emulating a game unless there is absolutely no other way to play it/already own it. Not that me buying SH3 would be a sale for Konami since I'd buy it used.

Also, I just realized I should have made my avatar/sig of the private eye from SH3. My roommate and I liked to joke about him looking for the Origami Killer since I was playing that game around the same time as playing SH3. Oh well. Kaufmann is awesome.

SH3 spoilers: So at the start of the game, Heather's sleeping in some dingy fast food joint at the mall instead of coming home and doing her homework. Even better, she calls me late and tells me she didn't even get me that thing I asked for. That thing was important.

If it weren't for her avoiding the creepy guy in a trench coat I'd be so very disappointed in her. Of course then she climbs out a bathroom window to get away from him, but can't even climb over some boxes in the alley to get back home. Instead she decides to go back into the mall where the creepy dude is. Except now the mall is filled with locked and broken doors and monsters. And when she finds a gun and shoots the first monster she uses every single bullet. Amateur hour over here I guess. She manages to locate a map, only to be once again defeated by some stacked boxes and palettes. Heading to the second floor, she manages to find an unlocked supply closet after being chased by another monster. Inside are some health drinks and ammo. There's another key on the floor under a palette, but she can't reach it because her arms aren't long enough and there are big heavy boxes sitting on it. As I begin sensing a theme here she decides to stay in the closet and cry a little wishing the monsters would go away.

There you have it folks. The daughter of the great Harry Mason.
