That's right! Following speculation from the leaked achievement lists for both Final Fantasy VII and VIII the PC version of Final Fantasy VII has now (finally) made it's way over to Steam.

This is the same version that Square Enix released on its own digital dowload store (http://finalfantasyviipc.com/en) a few months ago. Saves can now be stored on the Steam cloud and have spawned all sorts of "Cloud Saves" references! The character boost functionality is also there allowing you to fully pimp out your roster from the word go if you're only interested in the story. There's also no differences between the achievements either with the simplest requiring you to win your first battle to the ludicrous and, arguably the most time consuming one, to master ALL of the Materia!

If you've missed living the life of an eco-terrorist or just want to re-live that certain death scene all over again then this is definitely worth picking up. If you never played VII then here's your chance to find out just what most older Final Fantasy fans harp on about till the cows come home. Bear in mind though that the pre-rendered backdrops do look very rough around the edges though, especially at higher resolutions!

Prices vary by region (http://store.steampowered.com/app/39140/) but won't really break the bank.

This also means that we'll likely see Final Fantasy VIII (http://home.eyesonff.com/content/2550-final-fantasy-viii-pc-re-release.html) pop-up on the Steam store in the near future too!

Will you be picking this up? Or perhaps you already purchased it from the Square Enix store and are miffed that you can't have those all important cheevos on your Steam profile? Rage on, below!

[Thanks to Pike for picking up on this early: http://home.eyesonff.com/final-fantasy-vii/151030-hey-guys-guess-whats-steam-now.html#post3280673 ]

I'd buy it if they released trading cards for it.

I already have the PS1 copy, and I don't even like the game that much, so I'm going to be passing on this :P.

I just accomplished all I was ever going to accomplish on this game via the PS1 version from my PSP. There's no reason for me to ever play this game again. :\

I downloaded this off the Square Enix website a few weeks ago and just couldn't play it. The quality of the music bothered me enough to just stick with the ps1 version.

For a PC music fix, copy and paste this to your address bar:

http://www.icksmehl.de/downloads/ff7/ogg_music.zip

After that, go to the FFVII folder in your PC. Then find the data folder then the ogg music folder. All you have to do is copy the music from the ZIP to that folder and VIOLA! You can have the PS1 soundtrack on your PC version!

EDIT: Either delete or copy the music from the ogg music folder before you put the music from the ZIP folder in there.

Yeah the sound with the Victory cheer is just awful.

i agree, but just like with the original PC version you can replace the sound files with the PSX versions if you can find them.

It's so bizarre to see this thing with Steam achievements, but very cool nonetheless.

Might get if I buy Valve's Steambox or set out to make a PC in a very entertainment-center friendly case, but for right now I think the best version is probably still on my PSP.
