View Full Version : Oregon or Organ

How do you pronounce the state of Oregon in the US? Do you pronounce it "Oregon" (or Ore-eh-gun, or even Ore-eh-gone/gan/ghen) or "Organ" (as in, organ of the body).

The latter is professed to be the correct pronunciation by a decidedly insane person who is objectively wrong.

i agree with this. the word is three syllables, and the last rhymes with gun

also the above was intended as a pun: "or a gun"

According to this insane "Organ" person, every person this unfortunate member has ever met says "Organ."

I now have reason to believe this person lives in a mental asylum.

EDIT: For the record, I say "Or-eh-gun," though Sarah claims I said "gone" the first time I mentioned it (I didn't). Regardless, I maintain that "Or-eh-gone" is more correct than "Or-gan."

Three syllables. Hard to say how I say this one as it depends on how lazy my NZ accent is. I tend to go with the Or-eh-gon thing, but when my accent kicks in it'll likely sound quite different to you lot because NZ'ers are rather subtle with their vowels (particularly when compared with some Australians who can exaggerate them quite notably).

Relena Peacecraft

The difference between destressing the second vowel and eliminating it completely isn't exactly very clear cut. At least with a retroflex approximant r as I have, the transition between r and g brings with it a brief neutral vowel. (Who knows what happens for you crazy people with alveolar approximant or trilled or flapped or nonexistent r's. R is far too complicated a sound.)

I will say that when I actually say Oregon I intentionally delay the pronunciation of g to make the vowel more apparent, but in quick conversational speech, I could completely see Oregon and organ ending up with the exact same ultimate phonological production.

The real crazies are the one who make Oregon end in "gone". It seems to be mostly people who have never lived anywhere near Oregon. Like all these native Wisconsinites.

I would like to invite all non-Washingtonians to attempt to pronounce "Puyallup".To be fair all the names like "Puyallup" and "Sequim" are because they were really, really bad at Anglicizing the native names way back when those places were "named" in English. If they were derived from the exact same native word now they'd spell them quite differently.

I mean, English speakers have this issue with huge numbers of Chinese words so it isn't too shocking that it happened with far less common native words.
