Every poll thread should just default to these two options:

The correct way
Daniel Towns' or Sarah Cobb's way (context-dependent)

Shut up, you. I say it in the way that rhymes with race, ie, the correct way. :colbert:

I cannot think of what word rhymes with vase, certainly not race, so I say it "wrong", I guess.

I don't think the word vase is very important, at least not compared to the other pronunciation debates we've had. "Vahz" is supposed to be the correct way, but who really gives a shit about that in America? Both are acceptable.

If you said "vayz" or "vace" in a foreign country or in high society, they'd probably laugh at you, but then you can laugh back at how ridiculous their stupid laugh sounds.

I made a vote but now that I think about it, I'm not sure :(

Every time I hear that word, I hear this in my head Hercules - Zero to Hero (English Sing-along) - YouTube (http://youtu.be/KLn8QZFWiKI?t=41s)

This is what I meant when I put vays. If it ride with rays, I would've put vayz.

Seems that way. Lucky we know that they are always wrong, so it's okay that we're outnumbered.

Vays looks too much like lays, rays, bays, days, ways and so forth to me xD Something spelled like that is usually said with a "z" sound at the end, thus my confusion.

Yeah. When I was five years old and stupid I'd have said it wrong, too.

Well, NORMALLY American English has bastardized the pronunciation of words from their original British English form, but that's actually not the case here. The original British English pronunciation is the one that rhymes with 'race.' This is evident in the many rhymes by British poets using the word from hundreds of years ago, like your friend and mine, Lord Byron.

I don't understand how or why modern British English speakers say it differently than older British English speakers clearly did. They're forced, however, to concede that either a) all other American English language changes are valid and correct, or b) the way they say "vase" is wrong.

So, Euros, which is it?

Normally, when confronted with the problem of vase vs. vase, I just make loud grunting noises until the person understands that I do not have the intelligence to differentiate between vase and vase.

I don't think you understand. The way we say it is right, the way other say it is wrong. Keep up, Spuuky!

I don't think you understand. The way we say it is right, the way other say it is wrong. Keep up, Spuuky! That's perfectly fine. It simply means the way that we say everything else is right, and the way you say everything else is wrong (and by "we" I mean "me," since plenty of Americans pronounce plenty of words wrong). I listed that option for you: option A. I accept your apology for being so bad at so many other words.

Do you think people who say vayz say envelope, and people who say vahz say onvelope? I do the latter.

In what universe does race rhyme with vase? The word is stupid, I grant you, and I will just call it a glass fucking flowerpot to avoid having to say it, but it's not "vace" by any stretch.

There's no need for that kind of a comment, especially following my prestigious 22,222nd post.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting how the folks in NA say 'race'; if you would kindly post a soundbite, I would be better able to evaluate it. But, based on my sample evidence of every time I've heard the word said (incl. by professors of the English language thank you very much) it has never rhymed with race. I have heard it rhymed with "raise/raze" and "Ra's (as in, belonging to the Egyptian God Ra)/bras (you know, women's underwear)."

Ahahaha who the smurf wrote that? Did someone let Daniel Towns in to edit it? It gets many words right, and then just goes silly. Under what ridiculous pronunciation of "vase" does it rhyme with "arbitration clause"?

Loony BoB

I didn't edit it. My position is quite clear on this and it most definitely is in agrement with Quint Eastwood.
