Alright, we're almost ready to get started! First, let's go over the rules and how this is going to work:

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif There will be 12 rounds (more if there is good enough participation and I receive late picture entries).

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif Each round, I will post up a picture of a certain location. You try to guess the location.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif Try to guess the town and where it is. Example: Ottawa, Ontario. Or Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. You don't need to be more specific than that.

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif You will be given points equal to the distance of your guess from the actual location.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif This is like golf: the lower your score, the better.

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif In the interest of not having this take forever, participants will have 48 hours from the time I post up the picture to guess.

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif You can edit your post to change your answer, but do it before I see it. The first answer I see by you is the answer I'm scoring.

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif Once all of the guesses have been submitted, your scores will be given, and the next round will be posted. The sooner everyone answers, the sooner the next round will begin.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif If you miss the 48 hour deadline twice in a row, you will have 24 hours to submit a guess.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif If you miss the deadline 3 times in a row, you will be disqualified.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif If you don't want to continue playing, let me know, and I will disqualify you. That way, the other players won't have to wait around for nothing.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif For each missed round, you will be penalized points equal to the highest scoring guess (the worst guess) + 250. Remember, points are bad.

You will also be penalized if:

http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy232/PixKaruumi/Pixels/th_thed388096.gif You join late. If you decide that you want to participate and you didn't sign up, you will be given a score of + 250 for every missed round. This is to be fair to those who took advantage of the sign up phase.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2234/diamondfordates.gif Late entries will not be accepted past round 3.

http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/yy232/PixKaruumi/Pixels/th_thed388096.gif You guess the location of photos you submitted correctly. In the spirit of play, you can submit a wrong answer to throw off the competition. If you correctly guess your own location it will result in a penalty of +100 000 points.

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gif This post will be updated with a scoreboard going from best score (lowest amount of points) to worst score (highest amount of points).

http://smileys.emoticonsonly.com/emoticons/d/diamond-3286.gifHAVE FUN!!!!

I think starting from round 2, we should submit via PM and keep that round's thread for taunting/gloating/helping, otherwise it encourages waiting for the last minute to submit after double-checking others' entries to find the best guess.

You can submit via PM if you want. I think the spoilering your answers is a good idea, but if people want to take the answer of someone else and they're wrong, your answer would be wrong too.

This is actually an easy round. I randomized the order, but there's some coming up that people might not find so obvious and people would probably be much less confidence in their answers :greenie:

Damn, was mine THAT obvious. I thought most towns had a big balloon?

Oh, also Shion, I've come across a problem, that perhaps I've overlooked and is actually sorted and fine. Basically, in Round One I, for obvious reasons, couldn't guess my own location, therefore I was exempt from that round. I'm not even on the scoreboard. Furthermore, while many guessers also posted images, some people did not and are only guessing. This runs into a situation where a few people can answer all the rounds, and everyone else can answer all the rounds bar their own one. This effectively means some people can effectively have an additional turn because they don't have the burden of missing out their own round. Am I making sense? I hope so!

Basically, as in my case, would I score 0 points, or would there be some other arrangement? Maybe I'm not making sense. :p

Anyway, this is tough. The roads are British, as are the cars, but besides that, there's not much to go on. Knowing that there's not many members in the UK, and I've already taken my turn, I'll go with... Edinburgh, UK.

Denmark
08-08-2013, 05:22 PM
I would think if you submitted pictures, you'd get 0 points for that round (as in, you would obviously be correct in guessing). Folks who participate in some rounds but not others should be penalized for the rounds they missed, so that someone doesn't only guess once and get 0 points and win. I dunno though.

Pumpkin
08-08-2013, 05:24 PM
People who submitted images get a score of 0 basically as a reward for submitting pictures since this event wouldn't exist without them :P.

In the interest of making things competitive, as Jiro and Yeru pointed out to me, and as I put in the rules, I will penalize you if you guess your own location correctly so you don't give it away, but you can put on a "poker face" so to speak and guess a fake location so that the people who check other peoples answers can be thrown off course.

I have 7 guesses already :D. Keep em coming guys. Next round is posted up at midnight on Saturday EST.

EDIT: And yes, Rob is correct that missed rounds result in a penalty to keep things fair for those who participate.

Sorry for the double post but I don't want to get in trouble for 'editing' anything but here is my answer for this third round:

I'm getting a French Theme with this, but more importantly more of a Mediterranean one as well. I can't see it being northern France, or anywhere around Paris. I imagine it would be near, or around the coast as well. Of course, this is all calculated guessing but it just looks like it'd be in Southeastern France. Now for a location... Hmm... *Looks at map*. I had the same thing - spent a good while searching around and around the street views of the Edinburgh mall, suspicious because of the very different logo. Then I searched for "The Exchange", which is also visible in the photo, and eventually found this: http://goo.gl/maps/FbB9p

I had no idea you could google image reverse search! That might make things much easier in future rounds...

I didn't get it exactly; I was off by 152. But I paid particular attention to this one window that had a unique design. I spent hours reading and learning everything I could about church architecture and terminology, and got as far as determining it should be referred to as a "gable hexafoil (or sexfoil) clerestory oculus with surrounding trefoils". I searched EVERYWHERE for other examples of such a window, and eventually found one, which was stained glass and a lot more modern and looked nothing like it but was exactly the same shape, in the French city of Carcassonne. So I took a stab in the dark and figured I'd at least be close :)

Now wait until you see just what tortured train of logic I went through to obtain my guess THIS round.

I think it should be a rule that everyone, after the round, submits and discusses the logical basis behind their guess. I *love* seeing how chains of logic lead to (hopefully) correct conclusions. Plus it means the thread remains active during the guess period.

Heck, I think we should have another round in which we play cooperatively. That would be awesome.

I actually have a "Bonus" round after the 12 rounds are finished, if the thread is still active, where I will knock off half of your points if you get it right, and you guys can do it as a group effort if you want to.

Anyway, to avoid editing, here's my answer. DAMN is this a tough one. Who the hell could post three pictures of what is essentially 'snow' and think "Yup, that'll do nicely".

Getting a Canadian feel for this because of the snow. I know it snows in many places, but come on, Canada. We have members in Canada. Now, I know it does snow in America as well, but, eh. Heck, it's probably snowed in Australia one time as well. But I'm sticking with Canada, mainly because it's the obvious answer. As for where in Canada, heck I don't know the pictures don't exactly give much to go on! Looking at Google Maps, I'll just stab at... *Looks at map* New Brunswick. Don't ask me where in that, just aim for the center.

I hope that's the worst of them. Talk about non-specific.

My reasoning/guess: This one is tough. I don't know if submitting old pictures was within the rules but I'm hoping not! However, that assumption makes it even tougher, because as far as I can tell from my research, nobody on the list lives in a place that would have snow around this time. :p The closest is probably Vivi22, though (unless Cim is Canadian? I don't think so but I'M NOT SURE), so I'm gonna go ahead and say Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

shion: How do you measure when people guess countries/regions? I noticed some people said just "Provence, France" last round, which is a pretty large region. xD

I have a few distance calculators. I use distancecalculator.com, except last round because it was being fussy so I used a few different ones. I know Provence is a large region so I just input Provence, France and used the central location that they gave me.

So, Endless and TSoL, how did you figure it out?

This was my thought process:
First impression: If there's snow right now, it's southern hemisphere. And in the last photograph, that street sign off in the distance *looks* like it might say 17. So I started going over route 17 in Australia (there apparently isn't one in Chile or New Zealand). Most of route 17 is concurrent with other routes, so I assumed that it must be one of the two stretches in which route 17 runs alone. And I found using Google Street View one place, a town called Moore, where the mountains look similar. But something felt wrong about this conclusion, not least because I couldn't find any signs along the route that actually said 17 on them.

In the first photo, the street signs are facing away from us on the left side of the road. This means that the people in these photos drive on the right. Australia drives on the left.

Well, maybe it's just a couple of signs on the other side of the street. You get that once in a while. Or maybe the picture was flipped horizontally by accident (one would assume doing it on purpose is against the rules). But still, just to be doubly sure, I looked up the last month's weather in Moore and the surrounding areas (too warm for snow), and accessed current satellite snow-cover maps (nothing in the entire southern hemisphere except the mountaintops of Chile), and sent an email to the Moore city website asking them if it snowed there recently (it hadn't). So I reluctantly concluded that it couldn't be a recent picture.

So I took a closer look at the picture of the road with the curve in it. Yellow stripe down the middle. Most European countries and their colonies, including Australia, have white stripes down the middle, and yellow on the sides of the road. Only Canada and the US and some random individual countries like Norway put a yellow stripe in the middle. That's three strikes against this being Australia.

Back to the drawing board. Zoom in on the Route Maybe-17 sign, it's black lettering on a white background, with black AROUND that white background. But there's significantly more of the black-around in the bottom right corner than there is in any of the other corners of the sign, which means that it's not, say, a number in a white circle or some other symmetrical shape, like most road signs are, but a number in an irregular shape, probably the shape of the state or province.

After consulting wikipedia's extensive list of road signage styles, I found that very few states are curved inward in their bottom right corners (or at least very few of the states that have that shape use it on their signs). Most are instead curved in the top right and jut out in the bottom. The only one I could find that was curved like that AND used the curve on their signs was New Brunswick. But New Brunswick's route signs are green, not black. Zoom in carefully on the sign in the image - is that a hint of green I see around the edges, or am I fooling myself?

So I go to Google Street Maps for Route 17 in New Brunswick, and quickly discover that underneath each 17 sign there's a white sign with black lettering that says NORTH WARD or SOUTH WARD. This removed all doubt: you can see a two-word illegible black-on-white sign underneath the maybe-17 sign in the picture.

Now the question is, where along Route 17? Wikipedia for New Brunswick Route 17 says that it's pretty flat in the southern part of the route through the province, and hilly in the northern part. Google Earth confirms this. So it's somewhere in the northern part of the area in which Route 17 travels. Going back to the picture of the curved road, that road is plowed. But the picture with the Route 17 sign is not plowed. So I operated under the assumption that the plowed road is route 17 itself, and the picture with the Route 17 sign is talking about the entrance to the route (because clearly Route 17 is the most important road to plow if you only plow one road in the area).

So, beginning at the north end of Route 17, I used Google Street Maps to zoom in on each curve in the road, each time looking in the direction in which the curve goes to the right (sometimes looking northbound, sometimes looking southbound), so I could look at the curve from the same direction in which the photograph was taken.

And after a relatively short time I found the same photograph Endless did: http://goo.gl/maps/1kSYk

It's the same sign on the left, the same distant white roof (it's not snow, it's the actual color of the roof!) on the right, and the same exact mountain shapes off in the distance. That's exactly the place!

So how did the rest of you figure it out? The same sort of thought process or were there other clues?

I zoomed in on the signs, saw it was 12 or 17, looked up to see what it could be. At first I thought it was US route 17/12 (the speed limit and danger signs are north american shape), so I google drove through all of route 12 from aberdeen to mid-montana, since that's where the similarity in landscape and vegetation stops. Since that didn't work (and it took me all of the first day) I looked more carefully, saw it wasn't a symmetrical sign and eventually found NB's route 17. I just drove through it both ways until I found the spot I took in picture.

Even if you had the position of the sun or of shadows, how would that help? You don't know what time of day it is, and the sun could be in the north or in the south depending on which hemisphere you're in.

It doesn't really matter, long shadows would give me the east-west general direction, and short shadows north-south. It wouldn't be compass accurate, but it would save me a lot of time checking curves. For example long shadows crossing the road on the curve tell you it either comes from the north and turns west, or comes from the south and turns east, and you can ignore west-> south and east->north.
Of course, the closer near the poles you are, the less accurate it is.
However, regardless of where you are, it helps place each picture relative to the others when they are around the same spot (unless the submitter's evil and takes pictures spread hours apart) which can give info (a "U" shape building or half circle around a large courtyard, for example).

At first I was clueless, but after some creative thinking, I 'might' have got this one. I could still be completely wrong, but I'll explain more in the tag.

Right, so I was stumped, then I saw that the second(?) picture had some writing on. Zooming in, it says "Buildcorp" or something. I google Buildcorp and find out the website address is AU, suggesting that it's Australian. I can't really tell if they have buildings overseas, but I'm not really good at this, so I just assumed to look around Australia. The other pictures strongly suggest that it's a university, and knowing that Dak went to university, I then got his Facebook and saw University of Queensland. I Google imaged the uni, and it looks awfully similar to the pictures. Therefore, I can infer that it is...

University of Queensland (I'm guessing the main campus), Australia.

I'm still probably wrong. Oh well. At least I used the 10 brain cells I have to use!

I do not live in Moncton (too many french people) and I didn't send those pics actually. I'd guess Blays did but maybe there are some other NBers hiding here. I'm also slightly embarassed I didn't get that, but I assumed we weren't allowing old pics and jumped to the immediate conclusion that it'd have to be somewhere where it was winter now so I didn't look too closely. I was born and raised in NB, the pics are from last Christmas when I went home. Also, I figured that since seasonally speaking Google Maps isn't always right (street view in winter gives you the same summery landscape) that it would be okay. Oddly enough the area in question is very English though the region at large is slightly more Francophone than Anglophone.

And ypur score is? ;)

Never said I had an amazing score, but I've also refused to use anything other than my eyes and my brain to come up with my guesses. I haven't searched for anything of any kind online to try and come up with the answer. I find it more fun that way. :p

Time for me to buckle down and make a guess. Narrowing it down a bit, I'll guess that it's the US rather than Canada. I think there might be some provinces that let places other than provincial stores sell alcohol, but most of the ones I've been to don't. The only one I think might off hand is Quebec, but there's no french signage anywhere so it's definitely not Quebec. And I'll guess US from all the Bud Light signs. Sure, we have Bud Light here too, but I don't know of too many 3 lane highways anywhere I've been, and fuck that piss water Americans call beer. Beyond that I have no fucking clue. I'll guess Kansas since it's pretty centrally located so I can try and minimize my potential point gain here. Feel free to just slap a marker somewhere roughly in the center.

Aw screw it. Roaming around aimlessly isn't going to help. I feel like such an idiot.

So I'm looking at a map of America. I have to say, for so many damn states, they all seem so damn similar in Google maps.

Gimme Missouri. That sounds central enough. I would have picked Kansas, but I have a feeling it's probably more towards the east of America (and even then, that itself is a HUGE expanse) so... yeah. Gimme the smack bang centre of Missouri.

If I weren't already out of a top half finish now, dear God this round will damn near ruin me.

got it via Sub Station II and a very blurry "Springs" on the road signs in the same picture. how about you, Endless? (and I know sharky submitted it)

I looked at that sign for HOURS and couldn't make out a word.

Literally a few hours before the deadline I realized that the "ion II" probably was "Station II", discovered the existence of the appropriately-colored "Sub Station II", and spent the rest of the time trying to find out which Sub Station II branch it was. But then it was 2:30 am here and I had to go to sleep. So during the last half hour before going to bed I eliminated those branches furthest from the geographical center one by one, and guessed the middle and hoped I'd be close.

How did you figure out which station it was? Because of the "Springs"?

(Gods damn Hats Unlimited has no web presence. But I'm guessing that "van that's always there" belongs to the owner or a worker in the shop.)

EDIT: The store was located in one of the places I already eliminated, because I went to the supposed location and couldn't find it. Now that I return to it, I discover two things:
1) Google Maps' estimate of where on the street the shop was located was WAY off (how the heck did you find it, then, Endless and Denmark?)
2) It's Hair Unlimited, not Hats Unlimited. No wonder I couldn't find it.

Endless

I haven't looked and I won't, but I'm damn well going to ask you how the heck you did that after the round is over. I'm pretty much out of leads.

The first thing about these pictures is that when I saw them, I knew it was "The South". There's a particular feel to the South-East of the USA (MS->SC roughly) that's familiar enough for me to recognize. Finding "Sub Station II" took me a little time, but once I had that, it went fairly fast to find what country store (*) is next to a sub station II. In fact, google the two gave me a result named "Zeke's Country Store", and I was pretty sure before street viewing it that I was done.

(*) "try store" is readable, and there aren't a lot of words that end with "try" in 5 or 6 letters that make sense.

There was another way to do it using the last image, but it was longer: the road has 2*3 lanes, with a safety on the left, so it's most likely an interstate (and a bigger one at that, so a multiple of 5). The shadows are fairly short, and tell that the picture was taken aiming east or north east, which means you're on an interstate IX5 northbound or IX0 eastbound. I10 and I20 (using the fact it's "The South") are mostly 2x2 lanes and have only small sections on 2x3. There's also I40 (but it's a bit too up north), I65, I85, a bit of I95; I75 is out because it goes south-east. The picture has rolling hills and forest, so you can restrict the search a bit, and eventually you'll travel I85 and find the spot the picture was taken.

After I found the place, I checked one of the eoff member maps and I thought it was Shion who took the pictures, being the closest and all. >.>

Also, round 7 found obviously.

Damn! I got to the same point, and even did the same search ("Sub Station II" "Country store"), and I even spotted "Zeke's Country Store" in the first result. But I assumed it was just a list of stores in the area (from the title of the page), because I was (wrongly) certain from the pattern of the blur that the store was called "Roy's" or "Ray's".

There was another way to do it using the last image, but it was longer: the road has 2*3 lanes, with a safety on the left, so it's most likely an interstate (and a bigger one at that, so a multiple of 5).
I didn't even need to go that far - there's an Interstate sign visible in the picture, and I was able to tell it ended in a 5. But interstates are huge, and long, and I couldn't find any easy and quick way to get a list of which ones have how many lanes and for how long (it didn't help that it was Shabbat and I lost 25 hours of computer access for religious reasons, plus half of Friday that I spent cooking in preparation, so I wasn't going to waste time brute-forcing it).

The shadows are fairly short, and tell that the picture was taken aiming east or north east, which means you're on an interstate IX5 northbound or IX0 eastbound. Damn, you're good at this. I need to learn this shadow trick - I tried to use it but couldn't think of any useful narrowing.

Also, round 7 found obviously.

Okay, I really have no good idea based on the pic alone so here we go with some convoluted logic instead: Firstly, I'd say at a guess that most members are American, so just for the sake of pure statistics I'll guess this is in the US. I don't recognize any buildings or landmarks but it seems like a decent sized city and the trees give me an east coast vibe. But since that's about all I've got, time to pick a city in the eastern US at random. I'll try and hedge my bets a bit and go with New York. I've watched enough Law & Order to know it's not, but I don't want to go too far north or south on this one.

Why didn't I go with the Philippines. I WAS SO TEMPTED TO GO FOR IT. "Oh but Formy, the majority of members are from America, just go with logic for this one".

Smurf you Formy. Smurf you and your stupid brain.

EDIT: I should probably clarify why I thought the Philippines in the first place. I don't know, I just got an Eastern vibe from the image (which makes me wonder why I didn't smurfing go for it in the first place). First of all, there's there sort of misty haze surrounding the photo, which you generally get in Eastern areas, I can assume. Also, some of the houses seem very low to to ground and not akin to something of a shanty town (it isn't, it's just that short of style of low to the ground house. I'm probably not explaining myself well). Either way, that, and the weird atmosphere made me think 'Philippines'.

The reason why I asked people for a list of submitters was because I really wanted to see Pitye/LonlyPaperStar's name on that list. She was the only person I knew who lived in the country. If I saw her name, I would have gone with it, but I didn't know Aicha lived in the Philippines (I barely know her), and so with the only real evidence for it being the Philippines being like a mildly calculated stab, I just went smurf it and went with America. Statistically, with only TWO members in the Philippines, and like 90% of members being American, I have a more than likely stab at it being at least that.

But no, of course not. I was wrong by like half the entire smurfing globe. How I am still barely clinging on to a 'barely passable' 5th place is beyond me. I can't even be mad at Aicha for taking one photo because she's so darn cuute!

What.

HOW DID YOU GET IT.

I had guessed Yekaterinburg, Russia. There are quite a few red-striped buildings there with the same style of architecture.

BUT HOW.

[01:28:36] <Endless|Awayyy> There, sent my dumb guess for this round of geoguessr
[01:29:00] <Endless|Awayyy> If I get less than 200 points, remind me to play the lottery

Dumb luck and educated guess.
I had a gut feeling it was Asia from the start, possibly China. I was pretty sure it wasn't Vietnam. So I searched for high rise buildings and skyscrapers in Asia. When I say I looked at thousands of diagrams, it is no joke. Same with pictures, but I never found the buildings in the image, not one of them. So out of frustration last night I was ready to say some city in China or Thailand, so I did a last minute google earth flyover and realized most big cities in China are coastal, and have roofs the wrong color, so I had to change and flew over other countries around. I was ready to say Hanoi (I had it typed in my PM to Shion) but changed my mind for Manila because it has a very high number of high rise buildings and skyscrapers, and had roofs the right colors (red or green or white).

I thought we were supposed to submit our own pictures? As it stands, I can name at least two (possibly three) different locations for these pictures and source them.

Same here. They're from at least three different cities miles apart. What's up with that?

Make it <s>three</s> four for sure. I know where picture 1 is from but not the exact position, I know where picture 2 is precisely (I can show it on google street), I know who took picture 4 and where (but there's no google street in that area). I know who took picture 3 but not the exact location. Picture 5 looks like it's from yet another location (I found the same bridge on another picture that's on the river on the other side of the state).

Edit: found the google street of picture 5. It's all over the place, seriously (picture 2 and picture 5 are 62 miles apart).

Well it certainly looks like Vermont to me. That's my gut feeling from simply looking at the pictures.

So I'll go with Lebanon, Vermont because it's centrally located, and also near a state park.

Picture 1: Newport, VT (http://www.newenglandmagazine.com/vermont/newport/).

Picture 2: Hancock, VT (http://goo.gl/maps/Qlj6l).

Picture 3: Vermont (http://fineartamerica.com/featured/vermont-summer-day-david-england.html).

Picture 4: Morgan, VT (http://www.michaelyamatrouta.com/blog/?p=60).

Picture 5: Bridge between Windsor, VT and Cornish, NH (http://www.michaelyamatrouta.com/blog/?p=60). For the record, the picture is taken on the NH side of the bridge.

And I have round 10 figured already. A nice, easy one (no reverse search needed, ftr).
