So hi I'm getting internet tomorrow (yay I missed you guys so much!) but a wired connection just is not going to happen in my room without drilling holes and that is not something I have permission to do. Also I'm buying some really cool computer bits for me to assemble that can actually handle a video game, and I haven't yet settled on a wireless card. Now I've never played an MMO for longer than a couple of weeks and I'm considering jumping into FFXIV with A Realm Reborn, but I've heard that wireless connections are pretty terrible for online play. Anyway what I'm asking is, what are your experiences with FFXIV over a wireless connection?

It's terribler the more important latency is, because network latencies on wireless can be very variable, especially if several people are using the same wireless network.
FF14 isn't extremely fast paced, compared to for example battlefield or call of duty. It's probably worth trying, as long as you're not a healer in a very hard dungeon.
I get some slowdown but I dunno if that's wireless connection or absolutely shitty graphics card related. It's playable, at least!

oh it says my connection is great so I guess it's just my shit laptop ;__;

Who says your connection is great?

When you log in it judges your connection at the character creation screen, I think he's referring to that.

If the wireless connection comes from a router from the next room, you should be fine I think.
Depends on the speed of your connection.

I wouldn't trust that at all.

I'd say packet loss is a bigger problem than connection speed. As long as you're not losing any packets, it would be fine even at 10 Mbit/s, considering the game uses considerably less than that. The main issue with wireless is that it can't send and receive at the same time, so the computer does in fact switch between sending and receiving all the time. If the game wants to send something, it needs to wait until the PC stops receiving something first. If there are several persons on your network, their usage may cause your latencies to vary greatly if you constantly have to wait for them to receive data before you can send your stuff. Wired networks do not have this limitation, and can send and receive simultaneously without additional delay.

I've been playing on my desktop and PS3 on wireless and I've had no issues at all with latency or lagging. So it'll be fine so long as your connection to your router/modem is decent.
