I watched the episodes currently up on Hulu instead of working like I should have been. It was a nice nostalgia bomb. I'd never seen the episode about the fortune teller before. I've only witnessed the botched English edit that aired on Toonami when I was a kid.

It was nice seeing Umino, Naru, her teacher, and her family. I remember a lot of them just kind of disappearing past a certain point. Maybe they were cut out of episodes that I've yet to see or something. Mostly I recall that cotton candy demon Chibiusa gaining powers and destroying the show. By SuperS it was like she was the star, Usagi was her sidekick, and everyone else got a cameo if I was really lucky. Hopefully my memory on that is wrong, but I have a million episodes to go before I have to worry about it.

Well, toward the end of the second season the main antagonist does corrupt her and turn her into a super powered baddie. An arc of the story which was very cool in my opinion.

It wasn't until two seasons later that they decided to make her and her zoophilic romance the center of attention, which is why most people agree that Super S is the weakest of the five series.

And then in the last season they completely wrote her out of the show. :p

Umino and Naru had an episode during the fourth season (Super S) seemingly out of nowhere. If I recall correctly that's the last time we ever see them. Haruna disappeared after the first season.

I always assumed we could chalk it up to the fact that they're progressing through middle school and in the case of the last season, to high school. Friends would come and go, and they certainly wouldn't have the same teacher anymore.

If it's going to follow the manga exactly, then it's going to be quite a different beast than the original anime. There are a lot of moments in the manga that are way more dark and violent than anything in the anime was. Naoko Takeuchi had no problem making her magical mini-skirted schoolgirl heroines kill their opponents (and in at least one case, each other) rather than healing/reforming/rebirthing/etc them. :p

I guess it also means Zoisite and Kunzite won't be gay this time around. :p

I'm not sure about lack of character development for the villains. The original first arc is kind of short in the manga and this is still suppose to be 26 episodes? I think we'll get some expansion on concepts and characters just to fill up time. I also wouldn't be surprised if they keep some concepts from the original anime as I feel it is possible without going against the manga version of the story.

Most of the named villains in the original manga were disposed of as easily as monsters of the day were in the original anime. Jadeite/Nephrite/Zoisite/Kunzite got a lot more time in the anime compared to the manga; in exchange, Beryl's backstory was not at all touched upon in the anime. My guess is that there's going to be some kind of compromise between how fleshed out they were in anime and how little they mattered in the manga.

If the show is adapting only the Beryl arc, then the new show gets slightly longer than half of the original airing to get its point across. That's 26 instead of 46. To put it in perspective, it took 20 episodes before Jupiter even showed up. 42 before Venus. When the article mentioned how closely they wanted to keep things to the manga, I sort of figured that there was some exaggeration, or else it'll drag a little.

Venus is still the best girl, in case anyone had any doubts.

Ohh yeah. Could easily skip everything except for the first Rainbow episode (27-31). Could skip the filler after our spoiler episodes (36-39) but before Venus shows up. The first 24 episodes could be condensed into some major events: Sailor Moon introduced and an episode for development, Mercury, development, Mars, development, Jadeite losing, Nephrite losing, Zoisite showing up, internal Negaverse politics. I just cut out (14 + 7 + 4 = 25) episodes, meaning that of the original 46, we are left with 21 absolutely necessary episodes. That leaves 5 extra episodes for the new series to do whatever they wanted.

But what may be the biggest issue of all is that fans really may never see updated versions of the next four arcs. I haven't seen any press release that showed that they had any intention of pushing this remake any further. It's been treated as twentieth-year fanservice and not much more.

If anime in Japan is mostly product promotion for the real meal (LNs and manga proper), then Sailor Moon already did its job 20 years ago. The bulk of the money has been made from merchandising/licensing, and there isn't any new material to sell. The remake isn't selling something else, it's selling itself, and that is a recipe for disaster in Japan.

With the, at times, lackluster attitude of pushing this remake out, I don't see any of us getting an updated version of the last four arcs in anime format. The only case is if this anime sells so well outside and inside of Japan that it justifies updates for the rest of the series. I'm talking Madoka levels of sales.

If you wanted to put that in perspective, that's like SHAFT getting 60000 DVD sales when prior to that, anything it released barely broke 6000 even for their most popular series (in the first week). And you know what? SHAFT had to do that twice before they considered any more content for either show (and we still don't have Kizumonogatari). Toei on the other hand, is considerably more accomplished (DBZ), and has the One Piece cash cow franchise. They have no reason to support Sailor Moon any longer beyond what they are already doing.

tl;dr if you want Sailor Moon season 2 you need to buy the DVDs and Blu Rays the moment they come out.

On the plus side it looks like they are not going to waste an episode on the crybaby and go straight to Ami.

I just watched the first episode and I'm really happy with it. It's more or less exactly the same as the original first episode, but I was expecting that since that was one of the few episodes that was exactly like the manga.

The biggest change I could see is that they actually spent time on the dreams of the Silver Millenium, and they're apparently wasting no time getting to Mercury. If this episode is any indication, they really are going to follow the manga like they said this time around.

The only nitpick I had is the new transformation... I mean it's cool and all, I just don't know how I feel about the CGI.

They also made commecial bumpers for the episode, so I'm curious if we will in fact see it on TV one day.

I'm still watching the old episodes on Hulu every Monday! The nostalgia is too much for me at times. Kind of ready for the final two to show up though. She flies solo forever, then as a trio forever.

I watched the first episode of Crystal and enjoyed it enough. Origin stories are what they are, so it's hard to gauge much from just that. Yeah, Sailor Mars definitely has the coolest new transformation so far. Episode 3 was great.

I am curious whether they'll continue being faithful to the manga like they promised at this point, because in the manga Sailor Mars, along with Phobos and Deimos, kill Jadeite right after her awakening, pretty violently I might add. He didn't look very dead when she attacked him in Crystal though, and Phobos and Deimos were nowhere to be found during the battle. It was a tiny bit disappointing because up until this point they had been following the manga super faithfully like they'd promised.

But I'm cool if they deviate here and there. It'd just be awesome to see the manga stories properly displayed in anime form. Nearly all of the greatest climactic moments of the manga are greatly altered or completely absent in the original anime series. I'm still crossing my fingers in hope Crystal remedies that.

Her left hand would have to be facing outward for the thumb to be on the bottom. While there is a visible crease in her gloves by the thumb (her Life Line) to indicate that her palm is on the outside, there's no visible left elbow.

Her pinky is also extremely far off of where she should be, and that's even if she's not double jointed between the ring and pinky fingers. Her pinky actually more resembles a thumb. Normally a pinky has two joints, but this one only has one. Do you know anyone who has a pinky that's only half as long as their ring finger? I sure don't, and I know people who are missing pinkies and ring fingers.

Combined with staggering your shoulders, rotating your left arm to face palm out while doing this is really awkward feeling. It's possible, but not natural. If we're nice and forgiving, perhaps her long glove helps to hide the elbow joint. At this point it is fully extended, and so any bend wouldn't be as noticeable noticeable.

My favorite quality part is the lack of defining line between her left forearm and her right palm. The way it's drawn makes it look like her left arm just has a massive lump that she's holding onto with her right hand. :onoes:

Episode 4 was pretty great. It seems like Episode 3 was really rushed or something, because I didn't notice any QUALITY shots in this episode. Episode 3 was full of them. o__O

It's pretty crazay how fast they're flying through the plot. They're continuing their ritual of one episode per manga act and naming each episode after the respective manga act it's based on. I wonder what they're going to do with those extra episodes and what they're going to call them. One thing's for sure, 26 episodes will be more than enough to cover the first story arc at this rate.

Then again, they are starting to take little liberties here and there, which has me quite intrigued as to where it's going to go. Jadeite is still living, and there was never a confrontation between all four kings and the senshi like that before so they've definitely decided to take Crystal in it's own direction contrary to their initial claims, which I'm totally cool with.

I'm loving how manga attacks are showing up that never appeared in the old series too. Even though she didn't say MOON TWIURIGHT FRASH! she still used the attack, which was awesome. From the next episode preview, it also looks like we're going to get to see Jupiter's Flower Hurricane. I hope they continue this trend.

I'm so excited for the next episode. Can't wait. :3

Yeah, it was kind of silly, but that's exactly how Act 4 of the manga opened as well.

Of course, in the original anime series, for some reason, Usagi spends the first 30 seconds of each episode recapping the story from episode 2 to episode 30 or so.

She never really stood out to me all that much in the old anime. I never disliked her, I was just indifferent for the most part. I feel like I got more of her background in this one episode than I have most of the old anime run. It didn't help that she didn't get nearly as many solo episodes as some of the other Senshi did. Usually they lumped her with Minako.

Yeah. I like how this version focuses on her past relationship and hangup with her old crush. The 90s anime pretty much reduced it to a a running gag for comic relief...which was fine, but this is better.

I watched the first newly-dubbed episode of the old anime. The new voices will take me some getting used to, but other than that it's pretty spot on. No significant dialog changes and all the original names and such are intact. Luna sounds like Princess Celestia. :p

This makes me VERY happy. Those improvements are so much better. I hope they fix Act 3 too. That one probably needs it more than even 1 and 2 do.

LOVED the interaction between Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen :3 The lead up to the great reveal of the moon princess is just as exciting as when I first saw the anime from the 90's!

When this series was first announced, I thought 26 episodes might not be enough, now I'm wondering what in the world they going to fill the rest of the episodes with.

Yeah, I really hope so too. I'd really love for them to redo the last two arcs (Super S and Stars). They strayed so far from the manga and left out several senshi. I'd also love to see Saturn get a proper henshin sequence. She never did.

I have always been a big fan of this series and was very excited to hear that the Uncut version was being released in the US. Of course I had to pick it up for Christmas. Really bummed that I have to wait until February for Part II of Season One but I know it will be well worth the wait. The best part is that I haven't seen the show in so long that it is almost like watching it for the first time again. Anyone else share a similar love for this series??

I definitely agree that it is the growing trend to get as much cash as possible, especially from a series of this caliber that they know has a huge following; people will spend the money. I was disappointed, however, because I really wanted to get the blu-ray edition but at almost seventy dollars for only part one I couldn't justify it. I also read a lot of negative reviews on the quality of the blu-ray release. I opted for the dvd release for a fraction of the price, which will inevitably add up as I will have to pick up the next releases.

It has been a real treat though because my friend that I am watching it with has never seen the Uncut version and she is loving it so much more with all of the content that wasn't in the English dub.
