I've just taken a new schedule at work, and I'll have most of my week free. I think in January when the new classes start, I am going to do belly dancing. I'm also considering looking up a martial arts class.

Do any of you do forms of exercise that might be considered different that normal? Would you or have you ever done belly dancing or martial arts?

Belly dancing seems like fun!

I havent done anything unusual lately in the way of exercise, but I'm always open to new things. I look forward to going ice skating a lot this winter. XD I'm no Nancy Kerrigan, but I am actually pretty good at it.

Other than going to the gym, the form of exercise I have used the most is what I call the "Writer's Block Routine". I start to write something, pace around the house, write a bit more, do lunges, watch TV and lift weights, roll a few sentences around, do some starjumps, etc. I had a chin up bar that was useful because I'd just do a couple of reps every time I walked through the door. This also works if I'm cleaning the house.

I have mentioned this once or twice but my day job is actually very physical so I get in a lot of exercise by simply being at work. It's pretty great to get paid for what many other people have to make time for :D

One of my friends in NC actually does bellydancing. She says its really fun.

And as I've said in many threads now, I do tend to partake in underwater ballet a few times a week.
Or wait, what did I say in those other threads? Oh right, I've practiced for over a year in leap frog tournaments.

I used to do ballroom, which was pretty much just hours of exercise at a time. I would love to do it again, but I doubt I ever will. Rumba is probably the closest thing to it, and I hear a lot of good things about it. Maybe in the future.

Mostly when I exercise now, I want to fit in a) watching a movie or TV show or b) listening to an audiobook while I don't, which isn't really doable with something where you have to concentrate on moves or a routine.

Yeah I have a form of exercise that's pretty darned non-traditional:

I sit on my butt playing videogames drinking soda and eating junk food all day.

It's done wonders for my waistline!

I used to be a dancer... Before I got fat and lazy and video games took over my life.
But yeah, I'd like to get back into it, maybe.

Martial arts can be a great workout, if your trainers know what they're doing. I don't really consider that non-traditional though. If anything, it is a very traditional way of exercising in many areas of the world.

i did parkour three sessions and then ballsed myself on a bannister and never went again

i used to do kenpo-x a few times a week from the video, it was pretty great, good workout, should start again.

i used to do weight lifts when playing ff13 during battles to level up alongside lightning (i only needed one hand to do most of the grinding so i switched hands between battles)

I do logistics, so I spend the day lifting heavy boxes and moving them from point A to point B.

Hey I'm a logistican as well! I often find myself lifting a lot of 40 kg beer kegs and such.

Speed skipping. Speed walkers and joggers freak me out, so I speed skip instead. Kids love it.

Is something they offer at gyms really considered non-traditional?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned having sex yet.

There's a reason I put non-tradition in quotation marks. I'd say yes, zumba is "non-traditional".

Sex doesn't really burn many calories at all. 40 to 70 a half hour...make it more vigorous and toss in some sighing and moaning and you may top 100, but not by much. Definitely the most fun way to exercise though. Walking that long would yield you well over 200 cals burnt, even at a slow pace.

Really everything burns calories. You burn calories in your sleep too, but sleeping isn't exercising hence not everything that burns calories is exercising...
