(Reuters) (http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/01/us-usa-paulwalker-idUSBRE9B000W20131201) - Actor Paul Walker, best known for his roles in the "Fast and the Furious" action movies, died on Saturday in a car crash in Southern California, his publicist said.

Walker, 40, who was in five of the six films about illegal street racing and heists, died as a passenger in a friend's car while attending a charity event, according to a message linked to his Twitter account.

"Sadly, I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon in a car accident," Ame Van Iden, Walker's publicist, said in an email.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that there had been a car accident involving two fatalities in Valencia, a community in the city of Santa Clarita, at about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET).

When deputies arrived, they found the vehicle engulfed in flames. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

The office did not provide the identities of the dead, and said the cause was under investigation.

In the "Fast and Furious" pictures, the blond-haired, blue-eyed actor played Brian O'Conner, a law enforcement official. The first movie was released in 2001, and a seventh was in development at the time of his death, Universal, the studio behind the franchise, said in a statement.

According to the IMDb.com movie website, Paul William Walker IV was born in Glendale, California, in 1973 and began acting at a very young age, appearing in many commercials.

He played Professor Bennet in the 1987 movie "Monster in the Closet" and starred in the television series "Throb," IMDb said.

Walker also made guest appearances on television shows, including "Charles in Charge" and "Who's the Boss?" and had a role in the soap opera, "The Young and the Restless."

According to IMDb, Walker has a daughter named Meadow.

Universal conveyed its condolences to Walker's family, saying, "All of us at Universal are heartbroken.

"Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans."

My boyfriend will be crushed. He loves the Fast and the Furious movies with a strange passion and Walker was one of his favorite actors.

Ironic that it was a car crash that caused his death.

It sucks pretty bad. I'm going to watch Fast & Furious 6 tonight or tomorrow :(

If I can make a suggestion, please refrain from posting any obvious "fast & furious" jokes in this thread, as they aren't likely to be witty or helpful.

I only saw the first movie, "The Fast and the Furious", and aside of the fact that this handsome fellow and Vin Diesel were in it, I thought it sucked. :p

That being said, this is truly awful. An awful way to die (and in his case a tad ironic), and way too young. RIP.

My heart goes out to his family and especially his daughter. Into The Blue is one of my favourite action popcorn flicks.

I just saw pictures of the crashed car. Holy moly that is a crash. The car wasn't even a car after it hit that tree. Flames and car parts everywhere. Serious crash. What i'm reading is it was a Porshe Carrera GT which apparently are known for being difficult to drive. Likely the driver was trying to show off to Walker and couldn't handle the vehicle. Sad :(

Omg.

We were sooo stoked for the 7th movie to come out.

It's always shocking when things like this happen.

Fast and furious driving should have been kept in the films.
