View Full Version : I think I took a wrong turn...

Years ago when I played Final Fantasy II for the first time (I think Bush Junior was still in office...) I can't remember if I went left or right at that first starting point (or if it was the first starting point) but I remember getting into a random battle and getting my ass handed to me. Just handed to me. They were dealing damage on my guys that my guys weren't even capable of dealing yet. Is that how II enemies work? You can reach areas where the enemies are at a really high level and will crush your guys for just going the wrong way? I think I remember reading somewhere later that they were like... level 99 or something? How is that fair?

Granted, I'm working on a really bad memory so correct me if I'm wrong. If not, thoughts?

If I remember write, the enemies would be like that if you stray too far from the path to kind of help keep you from straying too far from where you need to go. I could be remembering wrong, though. I just played through II on the GBA, but I don't think I ever experienced that since I didn't really try to explore much.

If you go Southwest-ish from the Flynn you start going towards Mysidia, a later game town. Unlike later titles which just pose physical obstacles to going to these places the developers just figured the super hard monsters would deter anyone from getting there.

That said, if you do make it there is a lot of nice stuff that you wouldn't be able to buy until much later in the game.

A game that punishes you for having no sense of direction, I like it.

But as I tend to not have any sense of direction, I hate it.

I don't think it is so much punishing as developers not giving a damn whether you live or die.

I tend to play RPGs with a strategy guide so this wasn't a problem on my last playthrough.

That woulda helped me the first time I played XII....who doesn't open every treasure chest they see? "Oh, I think I'll leave this one behind for the adventurer passing through."

I'm stubborn and refuse to look to strategy guides for help except that time I looked to strategy guides for help.
