Sometimes when playing a game, you find tricks or strategies that make game easier or more enjoyable. They can be intentional by the developer, or a happy accident. This thread is not about those at all.

Sometimes, you try and break the game, and the game just says smurf you and punishes your foolishness.

One of my favorites is in various Touhou games the pattern gets more difficult as you shave off the bosses health. Since each attack has a timer on it, outlasting the timer will clear the attack. So if the timer hit's 30 seconds on these patterns, the difficulty instantly goes to the max possible, which is usually worse than just playing normally.

A couple other good patterns that have insane difficulty if you don't shoot.

note that for both of these the player has slowed down the game considerably to be able to finish. :p

What are some of your favorite ways games mess with players for trying to break them?

When Dark Souls first came out there were people who had managed to get the game before the official release date. FromSoft retaliated in ultimate Souls style by invading their worlds with a very powerful character (I believe using Smough's armor and hammer) to crush them, muhahaha! Not entirely a case of breaking the game, but still fun.

Trying to think of other things, but I can't think of anything.
