Mascarade : EoFF edition #1

In the game of EoFF, everyone can be a winner. We gather now to see who the real winner is, and in order to do that, meet the cast:

Del Murder, the Judge
Linode, the Bishop
BoB, the King
Psy, official Jester of the premises
Danielle, Queen
Shlup, Wicked Witch of the West Coast
Two EoFFChatters, peons and casual members,
Cid, Cheater of fate.
Aexoden, Spy, watching your every chat on #eoff.

In Mascarade, players (you) will have to pretend to be who they are not, and lying is not only allowed, but encouraged, as long as you don't get called on it.

The goal
To collect 13 gils, unless someone loses all his/her coins, in which case the richest wins.

The rules

Players play in fixed order (pretend we're around a table). Each player must take exactly one action on his turn.
There are three possible actions :

Swapping cards
If you decide to swap cards : announce SWAP with <playername>, PM me if you do a real swap, or do a pretend swap. Only you and I will know, the rest of the players will be left to guess what was done. You don't need to wait for me to reply, the next player can make his move.
Role-checking yourself : announce ROLECHECK. I'll PM you your current role. Same, the game can still move forward.
Role-calling : announce ROLECLAIMING <role>. From the moment you post until 6 hours after, everyone can CONTEST or ACCEPT. After 6 hours, anyone who has not ACCEPTed will be considered having done so to let the game move forward. If everyone has ACCEPTed, apply the role's power immediately. If one person at least CONTESTed, I'll reveal cards in the thread (see next point).

CONTEST rules : the CLAIMer's and CONTESTer(s)' cards are revealed, I will post them in the thread and leave the information visible for roughly 6-12 hours. If CLAIMer is who he pretends to be : he can apply his power ; if he lied : he pays a 1 gil penalty to the tribunal. If a CONTESTer lied : same penalty ; if he really is the role that was claimed, he can apply that power immediately out of his turn. If the player immediately next after the CLAIMer CONTESTed, he will be forced to take the SWAP action next.

The first four players are forced to SWAP.


The peanut gallery (roles)

Del Murder, the Judge : Del takes all the coins that are sitting in the tribunal.
Linode, the Bishop : Linode takes 2 gils from the richest player of his choice.
BoB, the King : BoB wins 3 gils, because all those Amazon links, man.
Psy, official Jester of the premises : Psy wins one gil, and takes two cards of his choice among the other players, and does a SWAP between them. PM me whether you really swap or pretend to.
Danielle, Queen : Danielle wins 2 gils. Joint account, ho.
Shlup, Wicked Witch of the West Coast : Shlup swaps her entire fortune of gils with the player of her choice.
Two EoFFChatters, peons and casual members : the EoFFChatter wins 1 gil thanks to a sweepstake. If the other casual CONTESTs and reveals himself to be the other EoFFChatter, both earn 2 gils instead.
Cid, Cheater of fate : Cid wins if he has 10 gils instead of the 13 needed for the others. Cid is Cid, you know.
Aexoden, Spy : Aexo can look at his card and at his target's card, and then decide to SWAP with him/her.


Tips
Contest someone who will gain too much and who you know is lying, even if you are lying too. You both lose 1 gil, but you will know your role for sure and you prevent the other from taking an action. This is especially true if you are playing one move after the next.
Lie through your teeth. If everyone doubts, it's a good time to call a good role. While no one will know for sure if you swapped cards, no rule pretends you from claiming to have done so in the thread. Confusing other players through words is a valid strategy.

You just got to confirm two/three of the roles. Contesting on purpose knowing you're gonna lose a gil can be a very valuable strategy if you are two places after the claimer, because you'll have confirmed your role, and only one player will be left to prevent you from using it.

I think I am slightly more capable now but a lot of this game seems to rely on other people being a) aware of strategy also or b) just as fucking clueless as I was.

I couldn't keep the rules straight in my head. (I messaged endless twice about my swap with shauna before I finally figured out I didn't get to know for sure who I was.)

I did manage to get the people sort of straight. Tas called Eoff chat giving me a chance at two more gil. I didn't mind MDNA swapping with me because I wanted "Cid" and it kept it out of Bleys' or Tas's hands, and the tribunal got ridiculously full.

I remembered Bleys was Del Murder, and couldn't see a reason why Shauna wouldn't have actually swapped with him to get "Del", so I swapped with her and waited it out hoping no one else knew to swap with me before my turn.

Mostly I had some good luck.

And now, the celebratory dance of my people.

Endless, thank you for running this game I was looking at askance; it was indeed a lot of fun, and executed fairly well in a forum-format. It was a blast to participate, although I think I/we could have talked more trash or added chaff discussion to confuse others. Not that confusion was not an issue already, but extra is always good, right? ...Right.

Trash talking and misdirection probably work better in live format, though, because the game's format mean there can be long periods before you get the result of a claim (to give people a chance to respond to it in the first place).
