View Full Version : Do you take your shoes off at the house?

Apparently I am among one of the few who don't. Is this weird?

I do whatever they tell me to do. I'm not going to wear shoes in somebody's house but like fuck I don't want to go to the effort of putting them back on in a little while. If I'm staying overnight or whatever then I'll take them off because ugh I need freedom

Depends whose house I'm in. If everyone else takes off their shoes, then I'll remove mine. In my house, it's okay to stomp around in your boots if you want to.

I follow house rules, so if the rules are to have them off, then off they go! If no house rules, I'll just keep em on, unless asked to remove them. As for my house, they're off.

i have a friend who has some weird security thing about his feet and visiting friends with him is a real chore because he hates to take his shoes off and will be visibly uncomfortable all night

I take my shoes off in my house, but follow house rules when I'm somewhere else.

Yup, this.

If no rules were specified on arrival though I would probably gage it by how nice their carpet is.

Yeah. HOuse rules def if I'm going elsewhere.

At home, though, I kick them off as soon as I walk in the door. I typically make my daughter take her's off too, along with her socks 'cuz I can't stand socks getting gross dirty on the bottoms.

I take mine off if it isn't awkward to do so. I never wear shoes or socks at home, but I don't care if others do.

Of course I take my shoes off. Unless the house is dirty or I know they do normally have their shoes on indoors, but it still feels weird. Most places I've been where they tell you you can keep your shoes on, they themselves have their shoes off and normally they have their shoes off in their house, but they say keep them on because they don't want to be a bother. But I mean, jeez. Especially when I go over for a dinner thing and they've obviously spent hours cleaning, I'm not going to drag my dirty shoes through the house like that.

I take my shoes off at my house. If I'm at someone else's house, depending on how well I know them, I might feel weird baring my feet because doing so suggests a more casual atmosphere, I guess. Good friends and family, yeah, they're going off. Acquaintances and people I don't know, like if I've been dragged there to accompany someone else, they're staying on.

Of course I take my shoes off, and I've never been to the house of someone who didn't do the same. Why the hell would anyone leave their shoes on and have uncomfortable feet while tracking dirt everywhere? The very concept make no sense.

Apparently it's a regional thing. Down here it seems mostly shoes off, but certainly not all.

At home, I leave my shoes and socks off always. At other people's houses it's kind of up in the air. I do it if I'm asked to (or if I'm simply at a good friend/family's house), but I'm more uncomfortable with it with people I don't know as well for some reason. Part of it is that my feet tended to smell atrocious when I was younger. Still do sometimes. I would go places where I was absolutely not allowed to wear my shoes so that we don't track in dirt or whatever, but then I'd have to deal with comments the whole time I'm there about my feet and I would hate it.

Home: Shoes off. Sometimes socks, sometimes not. Depends. I usually leave socks on at other peoples houses because I always have footwear that requires socks. If I am spending the night somewhere, well sure, then I am not sleeping in socks.

Ugh. I hate taking my shoes off. I always feel uncomfortable when I do at somebody else's home. But I do, I always follow their lead. But I prefer to keep them on. Even at home. If I am dressed, I am wearing shoes. I only take my shoes off if I am taking my pants off. Pajamas mean no shoes. Jeans or whatever mean shoes.

Near as a I can tell, nearly all Canadians take shoes off at the door. No one I know in the US does.

Because you're... polite? What the smurf. I take them off because I have better things to do than to vaccuum tons of sand, dirt and other stuff that shoes would drag into my home every week. Also, wearing shoes is actually pretty icky, so I only use shoes when I need to. Barefoot is so much nice, although I use woolen socks if it's a bit cold.

And of course I keep my shoes on if I visit someone who keeps their own shoes on. I don't want to put my bare feet or socks into whatever pools of mud they have in their homes.

Am I the only person who doesn't walk through tons of dirt and sand and doesn't track such things inside even though I wear shoes?

I don't get it. Do you all go jump in the mud just before you come inside?

Pumpkin

No, but there's still a certain amount of dirt that ends up on your shoes from being outdoors. There is dirt on the ground, in grass, on pavement, because people who have dirty jobs, or have kids who just got out of a sandbox, or just finished mowing their lawn, or what have you ends up on the ground and it ends up on your shoes and it ends up in your house. I've seen first hand how your floor can look just fine and you don't see much dirt until you sweep and there's a whole pile and its like "where did this even come from".

If you wear your shoes in your house and you don't get much dirt, then good for you. Seriously, that's great. For most people who don't like their feet being bare, I would recommend house shoes. And I don't mean slippers because those are called slippers, I mean have a pair of shoes you change in to that you only wear indoors. That's what we did at my schools. Come in, take off your shoes, put on your indoor shoes. Especially with kids and especially in the winter there is so much dirt that gets dragged around.

I just. I just don't understand. If there is dirt tracked in then vacuum. Or, I dunno, maybe wipe your feet at the welcome mat most people have. Stamp your feet once or twice.

It's mostly because I don't like having to wear shoes. :|

One thing I've been wondering. In porn movies the black dudes always keep their shoes on. Even when they sometimes have to remove their shoes to take off their pants, they put them back on. Is this a thing in America?

Or just spend 2 smurfing seconds taking your shoes off instead of vaccuuming twice as often. Who enjoys the feeling of wearing shoes anyway? Yall a bunch of weirdos.

Also, lol at thinking wiping your feet removes anywhere close to all the dirt. Maybe if you live alone you can keep it to a low enough level to not see it with your bare eyes, but if you live with several other people, I'm just very glad that I am not one of those several other people cause your house is going to be really filthy.

That and I hate stuff on my feet. I only wear socks when I'm putting on shoes. My feet get overheated very easily and I start burning up. Plus I just feel like being barefoot is a lot more comfortable.

Both. I don't have anyone to clean for me, so the less often I have to clean, the better. I also love being barefeet and stuff.

Theres about 1 or 2 houses in my lifetime where I've had to take off my shoes before entering a house, all of which wasn't in Ireland. It's just not a thing here.

My house mates boss came over late at night once, he thought it mattered not that I have cream carpet on the stairs and landing and proceeded to track mud all over them... needless to say I was less then pleased as I like to keep my carpet clean, I told my housemate he would be the one cleaning the mess up... the next time he (the boss) came over it was shoes off in the hallway like a decent human being.

As a rule of thumb, if you walk in the hall way or kitchen (where I have wooden flooring) I don't mind if you keep your shoes on, but the lounge I generally make people take their shoes off, if you buy the most expensive underlay and a decent carpet you really shouldn't need to have your shoes on.

As for other peoples houses, it really depends on their rules and whether or not my shoes are dirty/wet, if the latter then I would always take my shoes off as I know how annoying it can be to get mud stains off of carpet.

Yeah, keeping your shoes on inside homes isn't really a thing here. It's just weird and uncomfortable and impractical and. I guess I'd keep them on if I was visiting somewhere and everyone else did, but then I'd expect a rather short visit.

Anyway, the only time it's ok to wear shoes indoors around where I live is if you have shoes (or sandals, whatevs) that are used exclusively indoors.

i think that depends on at who's place you are. i wont easely do that at my family's hpuse, but then again i never go there, lol!
i would do it at a good friends place.. if i had some slippers.

it feels a bit weird to put yr shoes off in some1 elses place

Pretty much the only time I'll leave my shoes on is if the house I'm visiting is obviously dirty. If I take my shoes off, I'll just be getting dirt on my feet/socks and be dragging that around my house when I get home, plus it doesn't seem entirely sanitary.

Shoes on, unless I've just mopped the floor and then it's no shoes on my precious hardwood floor or I'll fucking cut you. Seriously though, who wears shoes so uncomfortable they can't bear to wear them any more than "necessary"? The removal of my awesome, comfortable shoes just means I'm more likely to be cold and/or step on a piece of lego or stub my toe on something.

my mother in law's house is the only house that I can immediately think of where she asks you take your shoes off, and only if you plan on going into her living room. Her living room is the only carpeted room in her house.

Where we live right now, I prefer to wear shoes in the colder part of the year because the floors get very cold, especially in the kitchen. However when we move out into an apartment, which will have carpet except the kitchen, I'm going to require shoes off, but I plan on having a welcome mat where you can place your shoes. I just prefer my carpeting to stay nice and fluffy. (my parents' is an example of a house that doesn't care if you wear shoes or not, so everyone usually wears shoes. The carpet was a lot fluffier when they moved in than it is now, doesn't mean that's how ALL carpet is, but still. I prefer no shoes)

Shoes off. Shoes are for outside. My feet like to be free! If it's cold, I'll just put socks on and if it's really cold, I'll put slippers on. I vacuum everyday, so I don't really mind if visitors take off their shoes or not, but most people take them off anyway.
