Excluding the online offerings, PC gamers have not been able to enjoy a FINAL FANTASY game on their computers since FINAL FANTASY VIII. However, that may all change soon. Square Enix are toying with the idea of bringing future FINAL FANTASY games to the PC!
Series producer, Yoshinori Kitase, speaking to Eurogamer noted:
Let's not forget, when we developed the FINAL FANTASY XIII series, all three titles, at the early stages of development were working on PC. Then we had to port it to the consoles. As far as the technology is concerned, it would have been possible for us to make a PC version, but we decided against it for two reasons: we looked at the market situation and we didn't think it would be a good idea, and also it would have involved lots of complex issues like security. So we decided not to do at that time
This is fair concern, the PC market at that time wasn't as lucrative as home consoles, but with the recent successes of indie games and record-breaking free to play games like League of Legends, there has been a resurgence of interest in PC gaming. Square Enix have taken notice of this trend, Kitase goes on to add:
We see potential in it and there are lots of regions and countries where PC gaming is very strong. So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world, and to as many gamers as possible, yes we would definitely be interest in pursuing that route in the future.
As a publisher, Square Enix have seen successful PC releases in the form of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Tomb Raider (even if it did not meet their sales expectations) and they will be hoping to add the upcoming Thief to that list. Square Enix have also enjoyed the successful relaunch of FINAL FANTASY XIV which has surpassed their sales expectations and is currently producing healthy revenue sitting at 1.8 million players.
It's also worth reminding ourselves that both FINAL FANTASY XIV and KINGDOM HEARTS III are using DirectX 11 development kits. Both games are currently being developed at a quality level higher than what the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One are currently capable of, and will be ported down to those systems requirements. Both next-gen consoles use very similar architecture to PCS, which should facilitate easy porting and multi-platform development.
Speaking at E3 2013, Tetsuya Nomura, director of both FFXV and KH3, stated that Square Enix would considering bringing FFXV and KH3 to hardware capable of running DirectX 11. This could mean that PC gamers will be able to enjoy those two hotly anticipated titles.
It is early days though, Kitase notes:
FINAL FANTASY VII and FINAL FANTASY VIII have been re-released on PC and they've been proving quite popular. It's an early stage for us. We haven't got an awful lot of experience in this field. So when we have more know-how and experience in this market we would be very interested.
How do you feel about this news? Does the prospect of playing future FINAL FANTASY games on your PC excite you? Or are these games best left to the comfort of your couch and trusty consoles?
