Alright, what the hell. Might as well go public with these.

I like to draw, though I'm pretty aware I'm not really good at it. I mean, I think I draw faces fairly well and have a pretty consistent style, but anything else turns out pretty bleh :p But that's fine as I mainly just draw characters from my stories and I just need this to visualize them better. Also, most of the time I draw during class, so it's mostly in pen and not on blank paper, because I'm sloppy like that :D

Hopefully you can give me some nice feedback. Basically, I would like to know how I can pose characters, because I'm really dreadful at that, despite having that poseable wooden man on my shelf, and maybe this will make you guys want to read my stuff! (shameless Fynn is shameless, I know)

Alright, so first up, here's Griff, one of the main characters from the novel I'm working on (you can read the first draft of the first two chapters of it here (http://home.eyesonff.com/timber-maniacs-hq/154665-fools-journey-excerpt-my-novel.html) :D)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-20.jpg

And here are some characters from a story I posted once in the writing prompts thread, then later on my blog (http://lionswritingstories.blogspot.com/) after some editing.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-37.jpg

And lastly, here's Evie from a story that hasn't made it to the blog yet.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image.jpg

So let me know what you think. I know there's always room for improvement and even though I don't want to do anything serious with this, I still want to get better.

Oh, and I will probably be posting more of these, as I basically always doodle in class :exdee:

These are great. Especially the first two and the last two.

Just dug up some old stuff!

Here's more Griff (I really like to draw him, as you can see :exdee:).

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-43.jpg

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-44.jpg

Just experimenting with some facial expressions here. Here's a drowsy Griff:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-45.jpg

And here is his monster-fighting partner/best buddy - Daniel!

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-46.jpg

(I apologize for the bluriness of some of these, I still don't know how to effectively take photos with my phone)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-47.jpg

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-48.jpg

And here's a chibi version of the main protagonist - Hippolyte!

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-49.jpg

Alright, here's some more Evie.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-51.jpg

And this is her beau, Chuck.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-52.jpg

Chuck likes to grow his facial hair out a bit.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-53.jpg

Evie prefers him clean-shaven, though.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-54.jpg

Much to his dismay...

Finally, here's a character I prepared as part of a D&D campaign that will probably never take place. I've actually prepared a lot of these characters, where they would help move the plot forward, but depending on how involved with them the party decides to be. Heck, they were even meant to be romanceable :D So here's a pretty important character. A young wizard, blessed by Mystra, a heavy burden on his shoulders. Oh, and it's a guy :D He's 18 and has been locked up in a tower for his whole life.

Alright, now for something different. As you'll notice, these are not school doodles. It's something I did today, I call them "promo shots" for my book :D Basically some characters from my book stuck at different poses with cliche taglines added for drama. I really stepped out of my comfort zone for this one. Hope it paid off, though I'm pretty sure they still need lots of work.

Oh, and you'll also notice they're scanned. No more bluriness! :D

You have some really good stuff here, Fynn. The character designs are quite solid, where each character can be easily recognized. I don't really have much advice to give, though I think that the tilt of the umbrella bothers me a little bit, I think it might be that it's not wide enough.

Griff and Evie continue to be my favorites. I noticed some of these images are kind of on the blurry side which makes it hard to make out some of the drawings. Any idea what's causing that?

You draw in margins a lot; it would be nice to see what you can do with fuller sheets of paper. Your last post shows a little of that, but those are still barebones. While you have character designs down, maybe some work on background art would help fill out your drawings. I definitely dig your characters' expressions. Keep it up.

These are pretty solid fynny :D You should do some finishing touches on those last couple drawings ;) Also, hand proportions need work. But hands are hard for just about everyone, including myself!

Wow your style is so cute! It's kinda cartoony kinda not? I really like the style. I can see it in animation.

It reminds me of a deviant artist (http://real-faker.deviantart.com/gallery/)I follow actually!

Looks like you got faces down really well. Bodies, a little less so but the more you draw the better you get and you're already doing amazingly. I can't wait to see more of your work!

Fynn
03-26-2014, 06:27 AM
Thank you for all the hard work and advice! I'll try to work on backgrounds more, but those always kinda sucked for me. Still, practice makes perfect, right? I'll also try to sit down and draw someone with a proportionate body, we'll see how it goes. I have some old full-body sketches lying in my file, but I'm still kinda weary about those. Next time I might even sit down and ink something.

Any tips or tutorials on coloring, by the way? I wanted to get there someday, but the magazine that I used to learn to draw went out of print before they got to colors. It would be cool if I could do it digitally, but I have no idea where to start, what software to use, plus, I don't even have a tablet PC.

Anyway, here are some characters shion prompted me to draw. They're all from FF, so they should be recognizable. Then again, two of them are furries, which I'd never drawn before that :/

I did not intend to draw Fran today. But I did. It was sorta meant to be based on this piece of artwork (http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-02/ff12-misc10.html), but I drew here from memory, so a lot of details are off.

I really like your style and how you can manage it using a pen. I always end up needing to erase when I draw, so it's rather quite impressive.

Fynn
03-31-2014, 04:36 PM
I can only do that with a fountain pen, though. Anything else and not even the faces look good anymore. There's sonething really fluid abou them, something that has always made me despise even writing with a ball pen.

Plus, thick lines give me lots of room for error :exdee:

Some more character for that D&D campaign I had in plan.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-70.jpg
This is Gerda. I envisioned her as a character who needs to break away from her past and just establish her own identity.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-71.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-72.jpg

Alder and Victor are half-brothers who care very deeply for each other. Even though they're technically of different race. The main problem here is that their mother was human. Her first lover was an elf. After he died, she had a fling with a halforc (so basically that makes Victor a quarter-orc). Victor actually has very little orc genes in him, so he's very calm and timid at times, hairless, fair-skinned and sandy-haired like his brother. He is, however, as big as regular halforcs and his face is as disfigured. This makes him not fit in with either humans or orcs. That, and the fact that he is destined to live a much shorter life, is the reason Alder actually resents any other people, even though on the surface he's a very nice guy.

Also, Victor is one of those characters I just really like to draw :exdee:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-73.jpg

He dual-wields katanas, so I thought it might be neat if he later got the weapons master prestige class and be wearing all samurai style clothing.

Very cute! You're very good at headshots. I'd like to see more full body shots though! I'm sure Victor the Half orc Half Barbarian would be a big dude.

Fynn
04-02-2014, 06:07 AM
I should practice full-body shots more, but I don't really have that much time for that nowadays and I am afraid that would only frustrate me because I really can't draw them, so I come full circle :onoes: It's really simpler with faces because I can draw those on margins, while bodies need more planning.

Agent Proto
04-02-2014, 08:33 AM
Yeah, full bodies do end up requiring more time and effort to accomplish.

Fynn
04-02-2014, 07:30 PM

It's been a while! I haven't had the time to sit down and draw, but I have some more doodles of my regular characters that I've done during class!

Here's the cast of my "Crosswords" series, done in a bit more cutesy style:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-88.jpg

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-94.jpg

Some close-ups of their eyes:

One more Jess, because I can:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-85.jpg

One more Freddie, because I wanted to see how he would look like in glasses. I figured he'd need them as he works with computers a lot, so he is just a tad bit short-sighted, just not enough to wear them at all times.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-95.jpg

And two more of Ian because I just love drawing him

Alright, here's Griff's sister Ofelia again:

And this is Angela - one of the protagonists of my new sci-fi series:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-97.jpg

And coming back to my D&D chars, first a cutesy group shot (still not all characters, though)

New batch!

First up, two of shion's original characters. Hoping this can help her get back on track with her novel ;)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-102.jpg

And now for some prompts that shion gave me! Boy, do I suck at these :D

First there's Xiao from Dark Cloud:

Now, Vivi

And... Ugh... :eep:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-105.jpg

Now, lastly, some of you may know I've been playing some Tactics Ogre recently. So here I present to you the awesomeness of the Phoraena sisters!

Alright. So today I needed to blow off some steam, so I sat down and drew a full-body picture of Ian.

So today I sat down and drew not one but TWO characters!

I don't think any of them is as good as Ian, but hey, let me know what you think. The main problem for me is that Ian turned out perfect for me - he looked exactly the way I imagined him. For Jess and Freddie - they're close, but just not there yet.

So here's Jess:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Jess.jpeg

And Freddie:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Freddie.jpeg

Also, a reupload of Ian scanned in a higher resolution, so that he matches the quality of the other two.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Ian-1.jpeg

And I don't know why, but my scanner does this weird thing where it whites out stripes off the picture. I don't know what I can do about it :(

Alright, so I've decided I wanted to learn how to color. And although I believe I have failed spectacularly (not only have I little colored pencils, but also I completely suck at this), I present to you a colored version of Griff's face.

Fynn
06-17-2014, 07:15 PM
I mostly don't like how the skin turned out. I have nothing remotely similar to a flesh-colored pencil - heck, I don't even have pink. I had to resort to a mixture of yellow, orange, magenta and brown. Brown was actually a past-minute decision, but I don't regret it, since Griff is kinda supposed to have this olive-skin thing going on. But yeah, if it was a paler character, I'd be screwed. Also, I notice it's very patchy. I need more colored pencils and I need to work on this.

For some reason the sketches of heads alone remind me of the Ivalice art. I think you should (head or more) get more into drawing as that speaks for real talent. Granted, I like certain Japanese styles more but no one can say this is not good. I would like to see more of you in the future.

As promised, here's a couple drawings. This was a lot more frustrating than I expected and so these aren't as large-scale as I'd hoped. I may still draw more.

First off, another Griff, who I think turned our alright:
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-130.jpg

And here's Daniel. Now this one I don't like as much. I've drawn him before and think it turned out better back then. Plus, why is it so hard to draw older people :( He's supposed to look around sixty.

Myria - an Aasimar Blackguard. She's subversive because Aasimar are usually good-aligned, but she's a blackguard, therefore evil :exdee:

It's been a while, people :D But today I have SOMETHING!

It's been forever since I've inked something. I mean, I draw in ink a lot anyway, but today was the first time in a while that I sat down, drew a sketch and filled it with ink. I cheated a bit, because I used my usual fountain pen instead of my trusty G-nib (for some reason, it just felt incredibly uncomfortable today), but I'm pretty satisfied with the end result. So here's Griff for you guys!

(He's in flight, by the way :p)

It was pretty time-consuming and now I notice some defects. The shading on the right leg is off, so it doesn't really look the way it's supposed to I guess. I could've done a better job on the jacket too, but considering this particular aspect was a first for me, I'm satisfied :)

Wow. That looks really good, Fynn! Though I do have one criticism to make. His arm. Particularly the one where he's holding onto the back of his neck. That position looks very awkward. Please note that you should have the forearm positioned behind the upper arm, not in front like it appears in your drawing.

Please note that you should have the forearm positioned behind the upper arm, not in front like it appears in your drawing.

His lower arm part must come before the upper part. How much depends on the angle but the inner elbow always shows at least a bit that the lower part is not positioned behind the upper part. The problem in the picture might be the length of the arm or at least that it may seem too long.

Fynn

Yes. I too have noticed the arm is all kinda of wrong. But I noticed that too late :monster: Proportions are terrible for me. The worst thing is, I use things that should help me with this (pictures, figures) and I see what must be done and I try, but I just can't. I guess I just need way more practice with that. It's only recently that I started doing these full-body shots, so I hope that, in time, with enough practice, I can make some progress.

This is Mike. He's supposed to be Asian-looking, as he's got a mixed Asian-European heritage, but I don't know if I am skilled enough to make that come through. Anyhoo, this character is one that I had the hardest time nailing down a consistent look. And here it is, and I like it quite a lot. My technique could still use some work, though :P

Some more school doodles today! Today's theme is my "Road to Eden" series. It's a set of stories with shifting protagonists and there's supposed to be 12 of them overall. Here's Jamie, the protagonist of the second chapter:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-156.jpg

So he's this chubby British 40-something office worker. He's generally well meaning but very passive in many aspects, often blaming others for his misfortunes, even though they mostly stem from his own negligence. Needless to say, he can get very frustrated. I'm pretty satisfied with the design :)

And here's the rest. I drew 10 out of 12. I do my best to give them more racial variety, so we have two black characters, one Asian, and a couple mixed race. The other two will definitely be non-white, but they're still not really settled in my brain. I have some ideas, but technically those two characters don't exist yet :exdee:

I did some doodles of my halforc character, Victor. The more I draw him, the more I like him. He's definitely one of my favorite designs from the ones I draw. This designed has changed substantially over the years, so you guys can't really see the progress that I made with him. So, he is a halforc who is a barbarian, but also has a very meek and sweet personality, so the main problem was making him look both really fierce and ridiculously adorable at the same time. Regardless of my skills, I really hope that comes through quite well. I'm satisfied with how his face looks, but I'm still open to suggestions on how to change it ;) Now, his huge body is another thing... Any tips on drawing big guys? He always turns out pretty weird looking whenever I try to do a full-body pic :shobon:

Exams are coming up, AGAIN, so naturally, I doodle constantly. This time I was drawing characters from my light story called Crosswords, which you can read here (http://home.eyesonff.com/showthread.php/159966-Crosswords), if you're so inclined (people tell me it's amusing, but I don't trust them. That ToriJ is pretty crazy). So here's some doodlings.

Here's four characters, chibi-fied:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-189.jpg

Here's some eyes:

Here's Ian. I'm pretty sure he's drunk on the first pic:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-193.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-194.jpg

And some Freddie. I'm actually gonna do a thing using Freddie today!

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-195.jpg

Since a lot of you guys told me that you consider my style really cute, I'm gonna give you a little tutorial on how I doodle a more cartoonish version of his face.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-196.jpg

Just so you proper artists don't get a heart attack, I mean that this is just the way I doodle on things. If I were to draw a proper drawing, Id start with a sketch, like a normal person. That said, here's how it works usually!

I start off by drawing the jaw outline and the ears. I use my regular fountain pen, nothing fancy. I love it because you can draw lines that are really thick, but also very smooth with it. Alright, so Mr. Federico Vargas has quite a broad jaw. When going for more cartoony styles, I really like to exaggerate how much wider his face is on the lower part. I also try to avoid curvy lines in this case - a jagged look is what I want here. His ears should be pretty big - he's always had them and has developed quite a complex because of them. Ian finds them charming, however ;)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-197.jpg

Next up, I add some little details to the ears and draw the eyes and eyebrows. Freddie's parents both come from Argentina, so, like a lot of people there, he has black hair and quite small, dark brown eyes. I give him really thick eyebrows, so he looks a bit intimidating, kinda like he's always pissed at something, even though he's actually a pretty sweet guy (who is also a terrible pottymouth).

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-198.jpg

Now, I move on to the nose. Freddie's got a big, wide nose, so I add a couple more lines to the base, so it's perfectly visible later on when I add the beard. After that, I add the lips. I want him to have this kind of cocky smirk. I draw them as one line, usually separated in the middle, and then I add the lower lip, which can usually be skipped, but it turns out really helpful when drawing bearded characters.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-200.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-458.jpg

Time for the hair outline! I wanted to give him kind of a fauxhawk, so there's no hair on his face. I start by drawing the forehead line, and then move on to the general outline using slightly curved, bold lines.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-2408.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-684.jpg

Now seems like a good time to draw the neck! In general, Freddie's pretty athletic, but he's not heavy, so while his neck will be rather narrow, I always draw him with pretty visible neck muscles. Also, his voice is a bit on the deep side, so I try to make his Adam's apple a bit more prominent.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-895.jpg

Now is the time to get started on the beard! Freddie's beard is much thicker than Ian's so I want to draw the individual lines closer together. And yes, I draw individual lines - I find that it later looks more natural and fuzzy than if I'd draw an outline first and then just full it in. Freddie's beard goes all the way up to his cheeks (for a fuzzier effect, I also make sure to go out of the jawline I drew at the beginning), and then just a bit above the left cheek there's about three stray hairs. I then proceed to simply fill out his hair with black along with any patches of white on the beard that I consider off-looking.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1501.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1232.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-305.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1084.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1770.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-479.jpg

Now, all that's left is some finishing touches! Freddie wears glasses sometimes, but only when he works, so I'm drawing him without glasses today. He usually wears black t-shirts. He always has a chain with a cross on it around his neck, but you usually can't see it. I'm gonna add the t-shirt, just so he doesn't look naked ;)

Hope you guys enjoyed this! Let me know if you ever want more of these ;)

Since the last tutorial proved pretty popular, I'll do another one! This time I'll do an Ian doodle and show you some more things I do with the fountain pen.

As with Freddie, I'm starting with the face outline. Unlike Freddie for whose jaw was wide and angular, Ian is pretty chubby, so I'm using more curved lines, so that the face looks fuller and rounder.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2953.jpg

Now come the eyes. Ian has a pair of large, baby blue eyes, although the thick glasses he wears usually distort them a bit. I draw the eyes in such a way that they make him seem really kind - Ian's just a really warm kind of guy. I don't fill them out - I just draw the irises and a tiny hint of a pupil within. I then add the eyebrows. Ian's aren's as thick, but they're pretty fuzzy looking. To achieve that effect, I use plenty of short jagged lines. They're quite high up, to make Ian look that much more approachable. I'll add thin hair lines later on.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2956.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2957.jpg

Now come the glasses! Thick, rectangular, solid-looking glasses, just to make him look a bit nerdy. They really add a lot to the expressiveness of his face.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2959.jpg

Next up - the nose and lips. Like I mentioned before, I want Ian to look kind and warm, dare I say cute? So, in order to achieve that, I use a lot of smooth, curvy lines. His big round potato nose is a perfect example of that. Add to that a wide, welcoming smile, and you got yourself a face.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2960.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2961.jpg

Now it's time for the hair. Ian takes real good care of his hair, so they're pretty stylized. I doubt you'd see someone with hair like that in real life :exdee: For now I'll just draw the bangs and move on to the top part later.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2962.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2963.jpg

Now it's beardy time. The steps are identical to how I did Freddie's, but even though both have thick, full beards, there's a notable difference between them. Freddie's was shorter and thicker, thus I used very small pen strokes to achieve that brittle effect. Ian's beard is more... I wanna say 'fluffy', and I guess that sums it up. The hair is just a tiny bit sparser and longer, and you can tell it's soft to the touch. So, for Ian, I use fewer pen strokes, but make sure they're longer.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2964.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2965.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2967.jpg

Time for the shirt and neck! Since Ian is much less athletic than Freddie, his neck muscles will be much less prominent, though I still try to keep his neck quite wide, since he's pretty chubby. He wears a plaid button-up shirt with a t-shirt under that. When designing him, at some point I decided to give him these wooden beads, just to give a little hipster twist to his look ;)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2969.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2971.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2973.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2975.jpg

Finishing up the top of the hair. Ian's hair is mid-length and pretty wavy. Also, part of it is slicked back, parting it into kind of three smaller sections. I leave the lowest part for last so that I can make sure the hair and shirt collar align just the way I want them to.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2977.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2979.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2981.jpg

Now here's the new bit! I need to add some thin lines for the hair and the plaid pattern. How do I do that? Well, I just flip the pen around, drawing with the other end of the tip. It's weird and I don't recommend it for more serious projects, but it does the trick for simple doodles ;)

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2985.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2985.jpg
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/IMG_2988.jpg

So, to finish the drawing up, I add the lines to the hair and the plaid pattern (which is a nightmare to draw, so I'm gonna half-ass it this time. I'll save my strength for a proper drawing), and here he is! Ian McCoy in doodle form.

I love your eyebrows. I've always neglected them but you're showing me how important they are to help with the entire theme of the characters.

TALK TO ME ABOUT NOSES. I always end up drawing the same type of nose for my characters. I'm not sure how people figure out how to do more eccentric noses and it look good.

Do you find the grid paper helps with shaping? I often have an issue with proportions.

I never thought about the grid paper helping, since I just used whatever I was using for class, but I guess yeah, there might actually be something to it. It does make faces somewhat easier to manage.

When it comes to noses, all I can tell you is keep experimenting, see what works.I also had that problem and although I can make some distinct noses, I also keep to a couple set patterns mostly. I always try to find ways to minimize lines, so that the facial features become a bit more light. So I guess that's my main tip - try to find shapes that feel and look right, and then try to reduce the lines a bit, see if that helps you achieve a more desire able look.

And yes, eyebrows are super important. As you may have noticed, a lot of my characters have really thick eyebrows. Not only can you arrange them differently for more expressions, but their shape alone can really influence how you perceive a given character. Like with noses - I advise you to keep experimenting with eyebrows ;)

So I've recently written another chapter of Crosswords. To make it easier for my tumblr followers to remember the characters, I drew full color portraits of them all. Also, at some point I started to have a color coded for each of them, I don't even know why.

So first comes Leo, the narrator/main protagonist. His color is green. I wanted him to look youthful and boyish, kind of naive, even. i know this image may clash for some of my readers, since I never gave a proper description of him, but this is at least how I see him :monster:

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-2179.jpg

Next up is Jess. Her color is white. She's kind of spunky and assertive, though the look I gave her was intended more Zoey Deschanel-ish. I still can't do even bangs right, but what the hay, practice makes perfect, amirite?

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1417.jpg

Next comes Ian, whose color is sky blue. I've already talked at length about the intricacies of his design. He's a bit of a cloudcuckoolander, but the main idea behind his look is that he's supposed to be nice and warm. And yes, that is a Triforce on his t-shirt. Don't get me started on the plaid shirt...

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-1197.jpg

Freddie's coded color is magenta, mostly because I once had this dream where a weird voice said that magenta is the manliest color :roll2 Still, as Ian's partner, he's supposed to be a kind of a foil to him, being more grounded in reality, but at the same time, even though he swears and looks like a tough guy, he's just as sweet.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-2292.jpg

Up next is Brandi whose color is a deep, dark purple. Feminine, tough and collected are the main traits I had in mind when designing her. I wanted her to look like someone who remains calm at any situation, but at the same time is a person who is really open and earnest with friends. She's also meant to look pretty similar to Leo, since they're related, albeit distantly.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-2120.jpg

Here's Mia in yellow. She's one of my personal favorite designs! I designed her as someone of a mixed Caucasian/East-Asian heritage, and I wanted her to look really headstrong, as she's the character that is most likely to remain patient and keep striving to achieve her goal no matter how much she fails. I hope she looks (and turns out in the story!) as driven as I want her to be.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image-2223.jpg

Last comes Martin. For some reason, I coded him with my personal favorite color - Indigo. He's supposed to come off as someone very cold and distant, with a hint of quite a crazy sense of humor underneath. For some reason, he turned out looking like one of my real life friends :shifty:

I like it. I never associated the Crosswords characters with any particular images, they were always just kinda names for me, so seeing them drawn is pretty nice.

Those are all really well done Fynn. I like how distinct and different they all are.

So my mind has recently been flirting with this idea of a visual novel. I've put some basic character sketches in the quick sketch thread, so now I'll post some more refined character portrait doodles :D

The story would take place in Hawaii and would be a slice of life/mystery hybrid (for now at least). I was thinking of a choice between a male and female protagonist. Here's the male protagonist, Kenta.

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_2.jpg

Here's another character, Dakota. A possible love interest to the female protagonist, Naomi. He would play a much larger role in her route. I see him as this alluring surfer dude. I think he might be fun someday. He accidentally looks very similar to Kenta. Might make the brothers.

I do approve of your idea :D

They look quite similar, yeah. Although the facial expressions give them two rather distinct auras.

These are all incredibly well done, and super creative designs and great tutorials. :) I like the Eden and Crosswords ensembles a lot. Marvelous digital colouring too. It takes a lot to make the shades when colouring a drawn image in. I know that from past experiences. Still, you've some beautiful and handsome fellows and furries on here. :) I look forward to seeing more of your astonishing creations, Fynn! Great work!

Here's another character, Geoff. I conceived him as the main protahonists's best friend since childhood, regardless of the chosen gender. He's also a potential love interest for either gender. Either way, whether it's Kenta or Naomi, Geoff loves them (either platonically or romantically) and will remain a staunch ally no matter what happens. At least, that's the way I see it now. His hair is red, by the way, with green eyes, while Kenta and Dakota were both black-haired and brown-eyed.

I like how you seem to draw this on any bit of paper you have in front of you. Is that a medical book?

I have medical translations this semester. So yes :p

So! I think I finally have all the main characters for that visual novel idea. Not all the characters are drawn quite as nicely as the previous three, but I did my best while doodling at school. If you count Kenta and Naomi as one, there's seven characters. And because I have a weird relationship with colors, each of them has a different color of the rainbow assigned to them :P

Also, the personalities you'll see now are just what I made up while drawing the characters, so if I ever manage to make the game (which is very unlikely), these characters may change substantially.

RED: Kenta/Naomi

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_2.jpghttp://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_7.jpg

So they're basically one person. The male and female protagonist have essentially the same personality in my eyes. I chose the color red for them because they are a warm person, very open to others, and also a little impulsive. Gryffindors, if you will :P I also made it a point to make sure none of them is white, so Kenta is of Japanese descent, while Naomi is black, even if you can't see that here.

ORANGE: Koa

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_8.jpg

Dakota's friend, another surfer. I chose the color orange for him mostly due to his connection with the sunset. He's full of passion and romance, living life seeking constant excitement. He's like this wild flame whose enthusiasm is super contagious. Although he's kind of a player that can't really commit, he is a romance option for Naomi. I think it might turn out interesting that way.

YELLOW: Lani

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_9.jpg

I wanted to make her a cute, endearing yet shy chubby girl. I don't really have much of an idea for a story for her. Yellow is her color because despite being shy, once she opens up she has a very sunny personality. Always optimistic and happy, that's what I had in mind for her. A romantic option for Kenta.

GREEN: Geoff

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_6.jpg

So I've already talked about Geoff. His color is green because he is the childhood friend of the protagonist. Green feels like home. Geoff won't give up on you, no matter what. As he would be romanceable by both Kenta and Naomi, he is the only gay option if you choose Kenta.

BLUE: Dakota

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_3.jpg

Like with Geoff, I've already covered Dakota. I'll just add some details. His color is blue due to his connection to the sea. He's kind of a foil to Koa, in that he too is a surfer, but he's a bit more reserved, much more cool and collected. Hes like the blue oni to Koa's red oni. He's also a bit of a deadpan snarker. He's the default love interest for Naomi.

INDIGO: Laylah

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_10.jpg

Here's the default love interest for Kenta. Like Dakota, she has a very big role in the main story. On the surface, she's nice and outgoing, but there is a lot she is hiding, and for good reason. Her color is indigo because I associate it with the night sky, which is beautiful to look at but also holds all these secrets that make you feel really tiny if you think about it. I also want the night sky to play a big metaphorical role in the story. I'm gonna need some really good illustrator for that :|

VIOLET: Kiana

http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o509/Paplyk/Mobile%20Uploads/image_11.jpg

Brash and outgoing on the surface, Kiana is very sensitive, but really hates to admit it. I guess she's kind of a tsundere? But Id rather avoid such typing. She's in a band, but she's actually very well-versed in the sciences. She's basically the smart guy of the group. Also, she's romanceable by both genders, making her the only gay option for Naomi.

Sergei is one of the main protagonists of the Path to Eden novel I'm working on. He's a Russian university professor, who is intelligent, cunning, and passionate in all that he does. His drive in the story is the search for truth. He is also gay and in a relationship with a former student.

I'd call something set in 2050 to be more of a near future story, but it's all semantics, really.
