I'm sure most people's exposure to this game was the 3D update and while I know that some of us have played the original by emulating, the question I ask is whether you would actually buy a straight port of the NES version if SE actually released it.

I would. I'm a sucker for my retro games.

Even though I already played the rom, if SE were to release the NES version (translated) legit, I would buy it in a heartbeat!

I remember, back when Nintendo was releasing NES classics on GBA, I kept hoping this game would make it on there, too. I didn't know back then that it was a Final Fantasy game or that it was fan-translated, heh. I just liked the game.

I played the III rom too, but I would buy an English version of the NES version if they released it, which we all know that they won't, but yeah I would.

I like the NES version better than the 3D remake. I've played through it twice, but it's sadly my least favorite in the series.

I'm kind of conflicted. I probably would buy it, but I still haven't played through my copy of the DS remake and would want to play that first. What I'd really love is something that would never happen: Square to release an actual NES cartridge of III with an English translation. I just love playing stuff on my NES.

I've emulated it and I really wasn't a fan.

I emulated it as well. Got through the first few bosses. It didn't hook me in enough for me to continue beyond that.

Having played through both games, I can honestly say I prefer the original over the DS version. While the DS version fixed some issues I had with the original (Geomancer and Viking class are not useless yay!) I also realized it created other problems due to its technical limitations. Playing with Status magic for instance is key to surviving in the original because you are usually always outnumbered and things like the dividing enemies can and will murder you. Since the DS version can't fill your screen with more than four enemies at a time, it is far more manageable to beat regular enemies.

Also, I just prefer the retro graphics and music. I've listened to FFIII orchestrated arrangements for years before playing the original NES and I never was terribly impressed by the music but after actually listening to the original NES versions, I became much more impressed.

I have barely touched the remake, but I think I could get behind a release of the original game with (real) translations and buy it.

Nope. I've played the original on emulator and the remake on DS and I like the remake way better.
