Do You Want To Be Squall & Rinoa?

An interesting fact pointed out to me a good while ago was that, of the playable characters in this game, only Squall and Rinoa can have their names changed. A person hypothesized this was significant because it meant you could insert yourself into their positions. FFVIII thus is all about you placing yourself in the love story because you identify with Squall or Rinoa.

What do you think? There must be some reason why only these two can have their names changed.

Both of them have a terrible life, and Rinoa isn't the best role model around, and Squall wouldn't make the best boyfriend in the world.

Never noticed that. I usually name them after movie couples, book couples, or Disney couples.


Belle & Adam ( Beast ) usually, imo it kinda works alot.

Interesting theory. Definitely plausible. I would not name characters after myself or a crush in a game in order to fulfil any sort of fantasy though. I have named characters after people I know when doing subsequent playthroughs for some variety.

I stopped using the rename feature ages ago but I can get behind the theory that it was meant to make the characters easier to relate to for the player.

I always just assumed this was why you could only rename those two characters.. I very rarely rename characters in games, and I usually only do it when I'm playing with other people and we are just trying to be funny.

That's most likely the reason you can only rename those two characters, and it's stupid. I like renaming characters in RPGs. That's kind of the point, giving them a name and making them your own. Just being able to name Squall and Rinoa was lame.

As much as I may have related to Squall somewhat when I first played it, he has too much of his own personality and whatnot for me to really feel any more connection to him by renaming him. Having characters in games refer to the main character as Scott honestly pulls me out of the immersion a lot of the time, strangely enough. That's just me, though.

The guy who wrote the FFVIII Altimate Rewrite (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?428367-Final-Fantasy-VIII-The-Altimate-Rewrite-Part-I&p=9709874#post9709874) (which is awesome btw) named Squall "Thay" and this is the only alternate name for him I can handle.
