Okay so I've seriously never played this game and I've heard a lot about it. So I got myself the DS version, and decided to do a Let's Play!

I was told that I should mention that I'm going in to this knowing nothing about the game. This is the only RPG I'm playing where I literally know nothing about the game. Nothing about characters, locations, story, nothing at all. So don't spoil it, or something!

*Note, I used a max monies and exp x4 code so that I can get this Let's Play done more quickly without having to spend a ton of time grinding and such.

Okay, so let's begin.

Pretty standard naming. The game is called Chrono Trigger and the guy is called Chrono. Question, is Chrono Trigger related to Chrono Cross?

Afterwards, the girl who is supposedly a tomboy but has done nothing but skip, frollick, giggle, and ask for candy decided she wants to mosey over and give it a try. They also make a huge deal about how pretty she is. I get it Chrono Trigger. I could stand to lose some weight. Stahp.

You haven't run into, but potentially heard of my favorite character when I was younger. Now? I don't really have a favorite. I like them all! While the characters to have distinct personalities, I find that is Chrono Trigger goes on, it becomes more about the story as a whole instead of a character driven story. Most of the cast have their arcs, but they don't overshadow the main storyline.

My favorite party members are Chrono, Marle, and Frog. Lucca is actually in fifth place, but this is a very close race between everyone. I like the cast a lot.

When I was younger that whole trial bit irritated me. I didn't do everything perfectly my first time, but I was found not guilty. It's funnier looking back on that memory now because I accepted the silent protagonist angle so much (not counting OLD school stuff like Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I played with a silent Protagonist) that I wasn't even thinking something like, "How come Crono doesn't defend himself?!" I didn't even consider it a possibility! The dude just doesn't talk, and that's that!

I mostly really like the trial, just because of the fun you can have manipulating it with your actions on the fairgrounds. Each juror is tied to a specific key (yes, even the one that everyone thinks is "random". He's not), and you can really have fun with it, especially with the extra scenes from the NPCs.

Plus, the trial music is epic, and I love the time-travel tie to it.

Medieval times, after you rescue the Chancellor: "We have to create a criminal justice system to deal with threats to the royal family."

Modern times: You get put on trial for abducting the princess. If only you hadn't rescued the real Chancellor (actually, he breaks free anyway, but still).

It seems a bit linear so far, yeah. I'm not too far in yet though, so it's hard to say.

A lot of routes are closed off to the world at large due to [future story plotlines], which you get to, and there comes a time when the world is your oyster. Until then, yeah, the scope gets narrow, but shion has not shown how a person can get lost in Guardia forest, the sewers, and even the cannibal church has a lot to miss if you somehow only go from plot point to plot point.

Yeah you can go to different areas and explore before the plot points but so far it has been limiting. Like old guy and fish robot slave don't seem to have advanced the story for me at all, but I could still go and visit them. The sewers were pretty long and there were a few more dialogues with the frog dudes that I didn't include.

You can actually skip the sewer when you first get to the future, but there comes a point where you HAVE to go through it, so it's best just to get it out of the way when you first arrive.

The commentary keeps on getting better and better! I need to up my game when I update my Shining Force II thread (hopefully ASAP in a couple of days)!

I don't remember, but it's where you bump a car to give it a boost to go faster. So I just kept having him bump in to me and I stayed ahead of him pretty consistently.

Once you make your choice, you can go back to where the other person is waiting and switch them out until you complete the area. So if you think a big scene is coming up, you can save and then go back and switch.

You can also avoid a lot of fights if you know where to walk to avoid the triggers (though the next area is one of the more annoying areas for avoiding fights).

I have to say, this area was very frustrating, especially since I have a hard time seeing the ladders going down on my screen so I got stuck a few times. It took me much longer than I would have liked to get through here.

We activate what we need to, but of course it sets off a very noisy alarm and I need to escape.

This is a very touching scene where Freddy tries to talk to his friends and all they do is reject him. They tell him he is to destroy all intruders and he wonders if that was his purpose and if that's what he was built for. Then the robots start beating him up :G

If I approach them, he tells me to leave them be because they are his brothers and omigosh I'm almost crying right now.

They eventually toss him aside and Lucca (and myself) is very upset. The robots say they will eliminate the intruders.

Anyways, sorry guys, I feel crummy tonight so I'm going to cut this short. It wasn't the funniest entry, but the moments with Freddy were heartbreaking and touching and I got to see a lot more of Lucca's character, which I enjoyed. I like her a lot more now. And Freddy too.

Yay, I like magic! But apparently people abused the magic so now only monsters can use it. BUT he says there are different people who can use different types and the potential is still there or something.

I like this part because as some of you know, I'm writing a book in which some people can use magic, but its based off of different elements, like in this game.

In this game, there are apparently 4 types, Light, Shadow, Water, and Fire, all of which are conveniently covered with my 4 characters.

So when I was at the end of time, there was a pillar leading like way way way way back in the past and I was curious to explore it, but I don't know if its somewhere I'll have to go later and I'll run in to stuff I'm not strong enough to fight yet, or if it's worth exploring now. Suggestions?

You can explore back in the prehistoric era if you want to. There's not a lot to do there at this point. There is a village, and several areas to explore. Just be careful, because one of the places has some really hard enemies in it (it also has some good chests, if you want to run in and avoid the encounters), and another is completely blocked off. The Hunting Range is a pretty great place to go if you feel like grinding, and will help you get some items later in the game.

You could potentially go to 65 million B.C. if you want but you are on the current story path and will get their eventually. I love the nonsense of Spekkio!

Note, Spekkio does in fact change his form based on his levels and for each form upgrade he gives you new items when you beat him, so check in on him regularly. Also the Arena of Ages is actually something new introduced in the DS version, it doesn't exist in the original but it is fun anyway.

Yeah, Robo/Freddy technically can't use magic but since he is a Shadow variant, it means many of his skills count towards all four elements. So Shadow Beam is Shadow, Cure Beam is Water, and later he will learn a skill that is fire based and one that is lightning based so he's a really good character for versatility even though his magic stat is pretty low. Also, Dual/Triple Techs which utilize more than one magic are considered Shadow damage, just as magic combined with a physical attack makes the attack that element, so even without using Robo, Marle and Lucca's Dual Techs together equal shadow damage.

I didn't think that Cure Beam had an element. It's just healing. I think elements only really affect attacking.

It's not likely an actual water element but considering only people with access to water magic can actually heal characters (barring one person), I just assumed it's the closest thing a Robot would get to water magic. I guess it's my own fan theory since the other Shadow user can use all magic types as well.

Make sure to occasionally check back with Taban, he gives you stuff. Ozzie... is kind of like that, his whole deal is that he's not really as intimidating as he wants people to believe he is, especially his no-good descendent in Medina.

You might want to switch out Robo for Lucca in the next area, because magic will be important and Robo just doesn't have the magic power to be useful, also Lucca's fire magic is going to be useful.

I must say it is really fun watching you go through this game and see some of these things for the first time, cause it's fun watching you stumble on important things even thought you may not realize it yet. ;)

There's still a flaw in that reasoning because the Gate Key is useless without a Gate, so there would be no way of instantaneous party switching, because that one party member would have to run all the way to the Gate, the other one would have to come all the way back. What would the remaining two so in the meantime? That would mean the whole party goes back to regroup and then cones back to where they left off. Unless it's just gameplay/story segregation.

As helpful as that note may be, it actually makes no sense, because Fiends are the only ones in that era who could use magic. Normal people couldn't. It actually does make sense, because Jugglers (http://www.chronowiki.org/wiki/Juggler) are a Mystic/Demon you fight in Magus' Castle and the note tells you that you need to alternate your attacks to defeat them quickly.

Magus' Henchment were originally named after condiments in the Japanese version because Akira Toriyama loves to do this with his characters. The English version names them after Rock singers so it goes like this:

Slash - Slash from Guns n' Roses

A similar thing happens with three other characters where their naming scheme is like a Japanese pun but in the English version they are named after the Magi.

Almost halfway, Magus is just one of the few bosses with a Gimmick, technically the hardest fight in the game is one you are not suppose to win but it is possible to win it in New Game+. With the level enhancer you have, you might accidentally win that fight. ;)

The Magus fight was hard because of the amount of time it took, but he never hit for more than 60 damage, averaged about 30, so it wasn't really difficult.

For Capsules, due to the way game mechanics are set up, Robo is technically the "best" person to give them to. He also doesn't naturally cap magic by level ** IIRC, so he's a good place to dump them. Personally, I hang onto all of mine until I reach max level, then decide who needs what most.

You might want to switch to a party consisting of Crono, Lucca, and either Marle or Frog because the next dungeon has enemies that are only hurt by specific elements. If you have either group's triple tech, you can do all elements or Just use Marle and Lucca's Anitpode to deal with Shadow elements. If you don't bring one of each element the fight might drag on, but considering you are over-leveled for this point in the game you may also be able to brute force your way through this dungeon with no problem.

Basically, in the original timeline, Magus is killed by Lavos in the Middle Ages. The flashback he shows you is his memory of how he got flung into the past but since your party screwed with the ceremony and everyone got sent through a gate, the Magus you fought in the Middle Ages ended up back in his own time and since he already knew what happened by being their as a child, he passed himself off as a Prophet to get another shot at destroying Lavos. Also,put him in the party and let him talk to his cat for a cute Easter Egg. ;)

You now have all the party members in the game. Also, Magus is the only optional character, if you fought him, he would be killed and it would slightly alter the ending. If you have Frog in your party when you challenge him, it's a duel with just Frog fighting him. Regardless, Magus is pretty fun and he's level 37 cause that is the level you should technically be at this point. 54770

The timey-wimey stuff in this game is really quite simple.

So, in a previous timeline, one without Chrono et al., little Janus and the Gurus get sent into different time periods.

Janus grows up into Magus and tries to kill Lavos.

After he fights your party, he gets sucked into a portal, just like you, only instead of being sent into 65,000,000 BC like you guys, he gets sent back into 12,000 BC to a time before all that Lavos thing happened. That's why we have two Janus' here, one big, one small. This is now a seperate timeline. Your actions have changed the course of time, which is why what you saw is a bit different from what Magus remembers.

Technically everything after this point is optional. If really wanted to, you could go fight Lavos right now and get one of the often missed endings when you see guidebooks for this game. This is basically an updated version of FFVI's WoR section where you are now just tying up all the loose plot threads. With the exception of Ayla and Magus' time periods, there is a lot to do in 600 A.D., 1000 A.D., and 2300 A.D.

Now that the Epoch can fly, you can fully explore all the time periods and reach continents you couldn't before, so start exploring.

Yes and No, as I mentioned you changed history when you fought Magus in 600 A.D. he was meant to be killed by Lavos. Instead he got sent back in time to his own time period and became the Prophet. He manipulated events slightly but ultimately his fate is sealed and his child self was sent to 600 A.D. differently from his memory.

Yeah, I'd heard about there being like 14 endings or something that you can get at different points in the game and someone recommended I go back after I finish it and get try for the most endings I can. Like get a guide and save before whatever triggers the ending and then continue and keep doing that to see the most endings possible.

I'm pretty sure I've missed some of them already in this playthrough so I would like to go back and see them next time

Technically it should be impossible to get all but four of them at this point and even then they are basically just two endings with a variation to them depending on how you reach Lavos by either fighting through the Black Omen, traveling to 1999 A.D. through the bucket at the End of Time, or using the Epoch to reach him in 1999. The other variation I'll elaborate on when you get a bit farther in.

New Game+ allows you to keep all your equipment and items, all the techs you learned and your levels. The game also introduces a new gate to fight Lavos that is accessible from the beginning of the game to help you get the various endings.

Anyway, on to the timey-wimey ball. Magus/Janus has been thrown through time portals twice. The first time, he was thrown from the Dark Ages forward to the Middle Ages, where he become ruler of the fiends through his incredible awesome magic power and long flowing hair. Then, after his fight with Lavos, he gets tossed back to the Dark Ages, where he's there as the Prophet.

Child Janus should no longer be visible in this time period. He went back to 600 AD, and isn't in the Dark Ages anymore. If you see him while you're there exploring after that stuff has happened... Then something has gone wrong with your game.



In terms of actual, intended game "main plot", you only have a couple of dungeons left. But there are about to be a bunch of sidequests that open up that will give you a ton of extra game time.

I remember her from 600 AD because there was never anything going on. But now, she is missing tress all around her house, her husband has returned, and she wants to plant a seedling but can't because apparently monsters.

Then I go all over the world map looking for what her husband is talking about, only to find it about 3 feet away from her house.

So good thing I saved because it took me 6 friggin tries to save her mother. If I fail (which I did, many times) her mother's legs are broken and Lucca takes an interest in science to avoid something like that happening again. If I am successful... well basically the same thing but with no broken legs.

I remember reading some theories on it on Chrono Compendium. Two seem to explain this - Time Traveler's Immunity and Time Bastard. The first one says that the holder of the Gate Key is immune to the changes brought on by time travel, possibly extending it to those that are important to his quest, which is why they are still in touch with the original timeline's Magus and Gurus. But with Time Bastard, things get grim - one timeline can only support one version of a person, so these tied to Time Traveler's Immunity get to stay because they're important, and the new timeline versions cease to exist. So the Janus and Gurus from the new timeline don't exist anymore, neither does the Lucca who knows of a childhood without seeing her mom lose her legs.

I mean, it's all just theories, but Chrono Cross kinda supports it with all the Time Devourer stuff.

Just so you know, you missed the scene where Marle tries to kill the King.

When they first fight, if you visit him with some Jerky in your inventory, you can offer it to him. It's one of his favorite foods, and Marle gives it as a peace offering. But he rages on, pointing out that Marle knows he has high cholesterol and needs to watch his diet, and that she must be trying to kill him.

I love this quest. It's just so fun. Plus, it's full of hints about the fake chancellor, such as the fact that the enemies near the Rainbow Shell are all enemies from the Church in 600 AD, or the mentions about the family grudge.

I really did! It didn't beat out my top 5 games, but it was certainly a very good game and I would recommend it to RPG fans.

Also, took me 21 days (started on May 1st) and 17ish game hours! That's a pretty short game, actually

Yeah, I hear you in terms of shortness. I don't fault the game for anything for it, but I been streaming a regular NG for the past three days and I am not too far away from beating it, even if I do all the side quests.

As the credits play it should show Crono, Marle, and Lucca in the Epoch, screaming across time. You pass multiple time periods, and get to see how everyone turns out. Including Prometheus (my favorite name for Robo, even though you can't name him that because it doesn't fit) and Atropos on a green cliff looking at pretty scenery.

Unless you got the ending where it's just Marle and Crono drifting away on balloons, but you shouldn't get that one if Crono's mom went through the portal.

I just got a black screen after the fireworks. I rebooted it a few times and tried again and that's still all I get :(. I even let it sit to see, but nothing. I think my game glitched out on me

That's a mini-Freddy that Lucca built (as she learns to make a bipedal walking robot, something that she mentioned would be incredibly difficult before she actually met Freddy).

As for the baby... You'll have to play Chrono Cross if you really want to find out.

Hmm... I can see why you think so. But I love it. It really helps comprehend Chrono Cross's story better. And it's really short, so even if you don't like it, you don't waste much time on it :)

Your time is partyl short because of the leveling/money cheats, even then you probably only shaved a few hours at best but now you can replay the game and get the extra endings, most of the cast get a special ending associated with them or their time period. Also, you can get a different ending if you use the Epoch to travel to 1999 A.D. and you get a different ending if you try to beat the game without resurrecting Crono. If you kill Magus instead of letting him join you, then Frog reverts to his human form in all of the endings that involve the Epoch.

Glad you enjoyed the game but now you should do the new sidequests with the abnormal time portals so you can get the lowdown about Chrono Cross and the truth about Magus, Schala's fate, and Porre's uprising.
