View Full Version : This Game Is Awful

The graphics are shite, every character is the same in terms of gameplay, it's about a bunch of terrorists and stereotypes I can't relate to, and the music was just a total ripoff of FFVI, the superior Final Fantasy experience.

Why it's popular, I'll never know.

While I have no love for FFVII because it has a half-baked plot, cookie-cutter villains hiding behind cyberpunk stereotypes to pretend to be fresh, a battle system which is hampered by some poor design choices that creep in Disc 2, and has the dubious honor of being an early 3D title meaning all the mini-games that utilize the 3D have aged as gracefully as a peach in the desert heat, but it is hardly awful. The fact it is still playable and enjoyable is a testament that it's designers sort of knew what they were doing.

The true awful titles are games like FFX which suffers from an awful plot, half-baked battle system, lousy characters, and some of the most phoned in game design to grace a PS2 RPG until Suikoden IV. We could also discuss FFXIII which steals half it's ideas from better games and then proceeds to implement them with the skill and craftmanship of a drunkard trying to piss in a toilet. It has sequels that, while they improve the gameplay front, have proven to sink the originals awful plot to "OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THE MOOGLES AND CHOCOBOS, PLEASE LET THIS STOP!!!".

I don't feel VII deserves half the credit it gets, but I also don't think it is an awful game as much as it is a flawed one, of which I could say about every game in the series.

I think VII gets too much love and isn't as good of a game as a lot of the others. I much prefer IX, VIII, X, XII, a few others. Other than Red XIII, I have to struggle to find a character I like, I can tolerate some of them, and that's a bad thing for me because characters are important to me. The story didn't grab my attention or make me care about it or want to know more, the world is forgettable and I have to look up a map to name more than 4 locations, the materia system is interesting, but could have been better.

But I don't think it's terrible either. Just... not good either. Kind of meh.

Interestingly enough, both of those words share the same root.

Awesome - Basically just a combination of awe and some, the meaning is to inspire awe.

Awful - Similarly, a combination of awe and full, meaning to inspire tremendous awe, and be worthy of respect or fear. The same word used to describe angelic or heavenly entities by those who have seen them.

Ff7 is just a product of its time. People that were there for the evolution of final fantasy from III (IV) saw how it evolved from the 16 bit era. I think its a good game but I would prefer to play pretty much any numbered final fantasy thereafter.

I kind of agree with you, honestly. I still love it for the nostalgia, given that it was the first FF I ever played. I still enjoy it, but yeah, it's pretty bad. I think part of its problem is that it's really missing soul. It's kind of a cold game. I do like some of the characters, however.

But sorry, I have to disagree about the music. The music from FFVII is absolutely stunning.

For the same reasons you think Snow and Hope are good characters.

For the same reason you think Ashley from Resident Evil 4 isn't annoying.

For the same reason most people like and dislike anything.

Personal preference. Different people have different individual likes and dislikes, and some times there is no extended explanation for why. They just like/dislike it. And there's nothing wrong with that. What is wrong however are all the people who can't seem to accept this simple notion and assume there must be something wrong with the individual who like or dislike the thing.

Ashley wasn't annoying. She's one of the best escort quests ever. She'll go and come when you tell her to, she ducks whenever you point a gun any where near her, she is captured half of the game so none of the escort sections outstay their welcome...

She was a sweetheart.

In Correct Land, Ashley was great and everyone recognizes FFIV was the best FF.

While in opposite land you people got the numbers all screwed up and praise that "VI" instead of "IV."

It's a sorry state of affairs to be sure.

Down with VI and VII. It's time the fanbase revolts and realizes the true best FF entries.

I sometimes wonder how much energy it takes to hate such wonderfully fun and gorgeous games.

Anyway, it's good to know how agonizing it is for some that many people still hold FFVII as the high watermark of the series and among the classics of the genre. There can be no better proof than the various intangible and arbitrary criticisms offered in this thread.

I'm not a huge fan of FFVII. It's all right for the most part, and I do enjoy it more than I really should thanks to nostalgia (and the entire start of the game in Midgar is actually quite good), but it's got a lot of flaws, and I generally agree with WK's take on it.

But that soundtrack is unassailable. One of the best in the series, hands down. And snow boarding, while objectively awful, is pretty fun just the same.

I disagree that it's awful. But I also don't understand how it's revered as one of the greatest games ever. For its time, sure, I can agree with that. For the impressions it made in thousands of people, sure. But there are so many worse games, and worse final fantasy games at that.

Eh, it may have been nowhere near as good as the original, but I still quite enjoyed the PC soundtrack.

Besides, the original soundtrack patch was one of the first mods made. It was available fairly quickly after the PC release.

While I'm a huge fan of mods and the modding community, gamers shouldn't have to rely on them to provide something that should have been in the game at release.

There's just no excuse for that happening.

Sure there is. Bethesda games have run with that philosophy for years, and most AAA PC titles these days are actually running with the idea of "ship with as many bugs as possible, and only patch it if it's game breaking", so a lot of games that allow modding have things that "should" be included that are only available through fan mods.

But I do understand your point, and I do mostly agree with it. I honestly have no idea why the soundtrack change was made in the first place, nor why any of the later releases (this game has been released four times for PC that I know of) haven't fixed it.

I wouldn't say it's awful but it lacks the charm of what FF is about for me. I struggle to get behind cloud, Aeris and Barrett, I quite like the rest of the cast though. Maybe if I played it first I would like it more. On a whole I enjoyed playing through the steam version. I would would probably rate above 8 but below 9-13.

13 had it's faults but it's positives outweigh VII for me. I enjoyed the battle system, cut scenes and story I just hated how linear it was. I first played VII around 2002/3 I compared it to 9/10 and ff7 seemed a little dull to me and it took till 2006 to bother to complete it. Maybe if I played it before the others I would rate it higher though possibly not as the setting and technology involved in game isn't to my liking (the same can be said for 13)

I have no idea how I would feel about this game had it not been the first game I ever played and spent so many years replaying and replaying it. Just like with so many people it is my childhood.

When I think about the games (mind you X is the newest I have played guys hahaha) all those stories are good in different ways. It's just a matter of opinion really. I love the story of VII. Maybe I would like another game more if VII didn't have the nostalgia value it does, but we'll never know.
