I haven't yet played Suikoden 2 so it may be up there once I get to it. S1 was good but not better than Vagrant Story, which I also played for the first time only a year or so ago.

EDIT: Forgot BoFIII

The only RPGs I played on PS1 were Final Fantasies VII, VIII, and IX, and I think I'd rank them in that order.

(It has actually been forever since I've played the last two, and I didn't put nearly as much time into them as I put into VII, but for now this is how my rankings stand.)

For the most part I wouldn't count remakes/ports unless significant changes have happened to modify it from the original. They should be exclusive to the system they originally released on, so if you only played the Nintendo era FF and DQs through ports on later systems, feel free to use them for those threads.

FFTactics
Chrono Cross
Xenogears
FFIX
Breath of Fire IV
(haven't played Vagrant Story yet. Once I do, it might kick out BoF)

Well at least a couple people mentioned Xenogears....

It is a fantastic, if extremely flawed, game :)

I am like Pike. I cannot for the life of me remember any RPGs I played on PS1 that aren't Final Fantasys.

The Man

1. Suikoden II
2. Final Fantasy IX
3. Chrono Cross
4. Suikoden
5. Final Fantasy VII

As with my SNES list, not absolutely sure about the placement of any but #1 or #2. There are also a lot of important PS1 RPGs I didn't play.

You two need to get on it then, there were quite a few gems on the system.

Suikoden II
Suikoden I
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Breath of Fire III

One of these days I'll get around to playing Vagrant Story. If it's as good as people say, it might end up kicking out Suikoden I or FF7.

The PS1 was definitely my favorite system for RPGs, containing a good chunk of my all-time Top 5.

Xenogears and Final Fantasy VII definitely top my list. I'm glad plenty of people are mentioning Legend of Legaia, it's so fun and would probably also be on my list. My girlfriend is currently enjoying it right now, and though it's simple and quaint, the battle system is still unique and fun. Lunar The Silver Star Story Complete should probably also be on my list. I never played it for the SegaCD, but I know it had a significant overhaul for the PS1, so it probably still counts as a separate game

The last spot's a bit harder, as I didn't really enjoy FFVIII or IX, and never got a chance at Vagrant Story, or Threads of Fate, or the Suikodens, or Breath of Fire. Alundra and Tales of Destiny were pretty awesome, but didn't retain my interest long enough to warrant a spot. I think maybe Grandia or Wild Arms would have to be it out of the games that I played. I didn't beat either of them, but they were pretty fun games with really likable characters for their time. Though Wild Arms had a really ugly battle engine in contrast with it's lovely SNES style sprite work for the over world and whatnot

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Chrono Cross

What about Star Ocean 2?
Threads of Fate?
Radiata Stories? (sp?)
Azure Dreams? (I think that's it... Psycho Mantis can read if you played it in MGS1, only reason i know about it)
Drakengard? (Drakengard is an RPG for the PS1, right?)

Note I have not played any of these games but I'm just trying to stir the pot some beyond the obvious choices.

Titles never released in Europe, most likely :monster:

Two of those games are PS2 RPGs. :p

There are a lot of RPGs on the PS1 but I think the battles over what were the best ones ended years ago I'm afraid.

And how about those SaGa Frontier games? I see nobody naming them and yet the fans of those games seem extremely passionate about them online. Thought they would be good. Might try them someday?

What? I just checked and Drakengard is for the PS2 but what else?

Radiata Stories is also PS2.

Oh.

Alright, I got this. I got a crap ton more games to replace my two wrong options.

Front Mission 1, 2 and 3.

I had a lot of people on another board tell me they had some cool stories. I think they were talking about 4 and 5 but...well, it's still three more choices.

Fynn

Wasn't the first front mission originally an SNES game?

Well actually FM 1 is an SNES game as well I'm afraid. Though it is a pretty cool series, especially if you like military mecha. It's a shame we only got three games in the series but I guess since a lot of the story is in supplemental materials like manga, radio drama, and novels; it would be bit lost on Westerners. I still think the whole reason FM5 got snubbed for Western release was because the whole game is just one giant kudzu plot trying to tie up the loose ends in the entire series.

1) FFVII
2) FFVIII
3) Wild Arms
4) Alundra
5) Breath of Fire III

I still haven't gotten round to playing FFIX which is happening soon. Wild Arms is the only one threatening the two Final Fantasy games though... I thought it was excellent.

FF7, FF8, Chrono Cross, FF9, Xenogears.

Honorable mention to Mega Man Legends, not really an RPG, but one of my top 5 favorite games ever nonetheless.

I could say it deserves to be on the list even though I have a ton of huge issues with it. Or I could say that it's one of the only five RPGs for the PS1 that I've played. Take your pick.
