It doesn't have to be during this match. It could be against Germany.

International football is way better than the Premier League.
It depends on who you watch. When I watched Liverpool those first five matches, it was like watching international matches for me. The vast majority of the international matches I've seen have resulted in me falling asleep or forgetting the match was on and doing something else. I'm not even kidding! The best matches I've seen tend to be CL matches, followed by PL matches. I think following Manchester United has helped in that regard, obviously. But yeah, I've seen a chunk of World Cup matches and they do tend to be far, far better than other internationals, but I still think CL matches are better.

Of course, I'm generalising. This World Cup has been one of the better ones and if the matches suited the times I was going to be watching TV then I'd be watching them more often. Naturally, I have no regrets about watching zero matches (let alone any TV at all) while in Thailand. :D

The one thing the last World Cup had, though, was New Zealand. :) I think that made it a lot more special for me regardless of the quality.

EDIT: Your curse still counts, Psy. It counted when Uruguay hadn't gone out (because Suarez was out of the side) and it can happen now as Thiago Silva misses their next match.

Odd, as my enjoyment of a World Cup goes through the roof as soon as England get eliminated. And Euro 2008 was great because England weren't there.

He's not actually paralyzed but is forced to rest due to a fractured vertebrae. With he and Silva out the next match, Psy's Sig curse could really win out in the end.

Fell asleep last night watching Netherlands vs Costa Rica, I don't know what it is about internationals that does it to me but they just get me so sleepy. :(

Actually it's probably the commentators. 90% of the club games I watch are on Sky. BBC and ITV have the most boring commentators in the world.

EDIT: Also, has any team really been standout in this competition? Usually there's always one or two sides who seemed destined for the final but in this Cup I'm not so sure.

The level of beating Brazil is taking right now...no words.
In truth, Brazil never showed a solid team to win the tournament. I was expecting Colombia to knock them off on the quaterfinals, but that wasn't meant to be. I think this result is more on line with the reality of Brazil, but still didn't expect such a beating. Great game, great football from the German team.

:erm: Christ. I've been looking at football all my life and that is the strangest match I've ever seen. It must be down to the expectation of the country that they kept pushing people forward and were so desperate for a goal. The Germans literally walked the goals into the net. Brazil's heaviest defeat ever.

I have a monstrous 5e on Germany since the start of the WC but I actually felt sorry for Brazil in the end.

Psychotic
07-09-2014, 02:11 PM
I don't feel sorry for any nation that has such a sense of entitlement to win as Brazil did. Yes, I know I'm English. And I want to say thank smurf it was brutally beaten out of this nation over three or four World Cups of abject failure. It's awesome now everyone realises how awful we actually are. Brazil will learn to appreciate it too in time.

More than that I've enjoyed the media eating trout though. Ooh, the ~*~Selecao~*~ (a word I'd never heard used to refer to Brazil in the UK before this World Cup and I've still yet to see a regular football fan call them that) we all want them to win it despite losing their hero Neymar, oh what a wonderful story it'll be!!! Piss off.

It reminds me of Ghana in 2010 and the ridiculous coverage that got, and how we were all supposed to want an African team to win the African World Cup because it help's the media's inane narrative. Enjoyed the handball from relatively unknown Luis Suarez in his pre-supervillain days, though maybe that was his being bitten (ho ho ho) by a radioactive werewolf moment. Absolutely loved seeing ITV's howls of rage and the indignant outrage of their pundit Desailly (the man who cares so much about his native Ghana he chose to play for France) just as much as I've enjoyed seeing their beloved Selecao brought low.

Incidentally, here is a post I made after the Uruguay v Ghana game. Four years on you can swap Argentina for Uruguay and it is no less true. :)
Frankly Holland could play Dirk Kuyt, just Dirk Kuyt, and win 10-0.

In fact Dirk Kuyt could declare war on the rest of the world and win.

Uruguay will have to get 5 of their players to man mark him I think.

Well, that specific game was, sure, but against a Colombian side who have been from all accounts fantastic in this tournament, Brazil were awesome to watch. I think that Brazil will go through periods like that which England goes through, where they try to realise exactly how it is that they were not able to win the World Cup.

What everyone seems to forget is that only one team can win the World Cup and in a shocking twist, it's only every four years and there are a lot of teams that are very good. I wonder if the likes of Germany, France and Italy go home crying when they only make the quarter finals or something and then start this long period of soul searching and nitpicking of their team and all that? I mean, come on... Brazil made the semi finals. It's not a disaster for them. I can somewhat relate because of NZ and their history with Rugby World Cups, but at least there are only about five teams capable of winning that contest any given year! With the World Cup there are generally about ten that or more that could realistically win it and the other nine shouldn't start crying because the didn't happen to win it.

The reason why Brazil is butthurt is because the last time they hosted the World Cup they lost at home and it became this huge national tragedy (no seriously) and they wanted to avenge that and instead they got even more destroyed.

Not saying they're in the right to make it a huge deal, but that's why they, well, are.

Totally unrelated matter; Do you still defend Suarez Paul? Now that he's a Barca player? (I'm sorry, I had to ask :greenie:)I've made it clear I don't defend the bite - how can you defend that? xD It was the act of an utter idiot. It was funny and made me laugh, but in the same way a wacky comedian making a fool of himself might make you laugh. My point has always been that the hysteria surrounding it when far worse things happen on the pitch - including what happened to poor old Dirk actually - is hypocrisy and people that indulge in it deserve to be made fun of :p I don't have any respect for the football media or most pundits at all, they love to be overly negative and critical of foreign players because that's what gets attention, but then they suck up to English managers/players because they're likely to stay in England all their careers and they need to build a good relationship. Fans who blindly parrot their views don't really get the time of day from me either.

Jermain Defoe bit the lovely man in my avatar in 2006 in a Spurs v West Ham match (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzXBSvngRR0). How many of you even knew that? Was there a media troutstorm? I know Suarez is a repeat offender but that still doesn't fly with me - if biting is so abhorrent then one incidence of it is still worthy of moral condemnation, surely? But then Jermain Defoe being an arsehole doesn't quite sell papers like Luis Suarez being an arsehole does.

FIFA's ban was also the most ridiculous thing I've seen for football discipline, not even being allowed to attend games or even train is just outright draconian and I think it's just posturing and grandstanding. I still feel that way, it's still so far removed from anything that makes sense. Just make him play in a muzzle. He wants to act the fool he can look like a fool!

Finally, no, it doesn't matter who he plays for. I like Liverpool players more but contrary to whatever Old Manus says, if you actually look back on my posts I think I'm pretty fair when it comes to Liverpool players. You may remember my calls for my all time hero Steven Gerrard to be dropped from the England team, or saying Sturridge dived to win a penalty at Old Trafford. But then you may not, because nobody really takes notice or gives a smurf when I do that, but when I do praise/defend a Liverpool player it's because I'm a crazy Liverpool fan. Can't win! :p

Rocket Edge
07-13-2014, 01:49 PM
You make some good points (I think I have even being converted to a DIRK supporter). For instance, in a Korean Premier League match you won't see a nobody getting the attention or ban that Suarez got, but then again it was in the WC in front of a portion of the world's population. FIFA being the mafia they are were always gonna come down harsh. I think the decision was harsh though.

You are fair IMO, like pretty much everyone else here. You say derogatory things about United at times but it's just keeping the rivalry alive (I'm guilty of this too, you bastard :smug:). If I have anything to share about football in general I post in this forum because it makes me laugh & I know I won't get silly replies from people who are blinded by the media.

Finally, opinions about tonight's match? I think 1-0 to Germany or else a penalty shootout. You just know Argentina will have studied Germanys style of play. Argentina play counter attacking against a German team who although quite attacking are set up extremely well. I think it will be fascinating, but with few goals IMO.

Loony BoB
07-13-2014, 02:14 PM
I honestly don't think the decision was harsh because it was the third time. If a guy in the stands bit someone three times, with longer bans each time, they'd be banned from stadiums for life by now, surely. Hell, they might even be off to prison.

Rocket Edge
07-13-2014, 02:21 PM
Manus made the point that if it happened on rugby pitch he'd probably be banned for life. Thats very true.

I dunno, I think in general football's discipline actions are so wayward that everyone keeps comparing them to other sanctions that other players got and it's an element why there is debate. 'Suarez should not get 4 months because X got only two months! Suarez should get more of a ban because X got 6 months!'

Argentina's defense has been tight so that would be the there. Where they are defending. Germany has held a lot of possession so they would need to get through that defense or the there to make more shots.

Or should there not exist? I think a gaping hole in the land between how far Germany is getting and the goal could be quite dangerous and probably would result in a lot of deaths. I mean I know this is FIFA but deaths and football aren't a good thing!

What, where they're chasing him through the forest at the beginning? Yeah, it's ok... But I think the ending where he says goodbye to Elliot has far more emotional resonance.

Both Aguero and Mascherano should have been sent off. Argentina better lose, they've suddenly resorted to bullying in the last 15 and it's ridiculous what they're getting away with.

Justice. Good result. Will hold my hands up, I have no objection to 3 seconds of shots of hot Argentinan ladies in the middle of my Men In Shorts Day.

Schweinsteiger my Man of the Match. Guy was brutalised to hell and just kept getting back up and putting his body on the line for the good of the team. Seemed to be freakin' everywhere.

Everything I've ever loved is in ruins. All my hopes, all my dreams, all of them are in tatters.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/englandsig_zpsfc305252.jpg
My homeland of course. Proud English lions. Relied on a potato man and a captain who is literally 46.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/uruguay_zpsf62e1218.png
Ah, Uruguay. My fallen idol. Transformed into a werewolf and his team were smurfed without him.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/chile_zps64c99152.png
Chile played some sexy football and I loved their verve. Brazil promptly jammied them on penalties.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/USA_zps77a9c311.jpg
Ah, America. I had USA as a team in my work's sweep, and victory would see the game becoming very popular over there. Part of me, though, part of me wanted them to fail after some of the gloating reactions to my beloved England. I was in two minds. Was there a curse? I didn't know. But it was not to be.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/belgium2_zpsdd30d0c4.jpg
It was at this point I began to realise my powers and smurfed the Belgians hard just to spite Bubba. Even the afro in this signature was subsequently destroyed.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/brazil2_zps49dbbc4d.jpg
The sheer hubris of this nation offended me. Did you know they created a victory song to celebrate their impending victory over Germany? It was never sung. I am glad they were silenced forever.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/dirkdirk_zps6e3ec364.jpg
Everybody implored me to turn on the Dutch after Robben's diving. I couldn't bear to put him in there. Instead I turned to a man I love, and watched as he took an elbow to the back of the head and lost so much blood. For the greater good, I told myself.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/argentina_zpse6f9ad69.jpg
At this point, well. The Argentines had indulged in their wacky Malvinas antics before the tournament. If Messi so much as scored a tap in off his arse the media would be screeching that he was the best player of all time. I couldn't let that happen. They had to be stopped... and I had the power.

What started as an innocent love of football and nations grew into something dark and sinister. I know now my signature has a dark power. The power to make a nation and the power to break a nation. I believe justice has been delivered, but such a power should be used responsibly. I reckon my work here is done. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e373/photobucketamazingness/emot-clint_zps319ed24a.gif So long, World Cup thread. *rides into the sunset*

I think you should go back to putting your beloved Premier League teams into your sig. By which I mean Liverpool and Manchester City, not Leicester City. I don't mind if Leicester City win the Premier League.

EDIT: Hell, throw in Chelsea while you're at it!

Messi totally undeserving of the Player of the Tournament based on the two games I saw him in. I hear he did well at the group stage? I dare say Rodriguez did better than he did based on what I heard in the papers. I can only recall Messi being mentioned in glowing terms in one of the games he played in.

You guys watched more games than I did. What do you think? :o

It's a good thing I didn't enter this league, eh Paul? :smug:

Just a couple of things:

Germany deserved it IMO. I hope Higuain is safe going back to Argentina after that first half miss.

Best player of the tournament is Robben for me. Holland got third with a team of workhorses with one creative talent in him on the wing and could have easily won the thing. That's amazing.

Thank you BoB. I remember being the first (if memory serves me correctly) as being the first to vote for Germany. :D

Fantastic display of diving by Muller. And kudos to the Italian ref for missing a blatant penalty when the German keeper came out to challenge the ball.
