For me, FFIV is the title that really changed the franchise. FFII brought story and character but IV was the game that made something of it by making the emotional conflict and turmoil of the characters be front and center as a driving element of the plot. This in turn became the basis for the rest of the series because while FFV tried to go back to the plot of convenience, FFVI and VII took this concept of the character-driven story to become the element the series would be known for.

Even though the plot has not aged well, people are still being drawn in by the characters which is a pretty nice testament to how Square got so much right.

Agree, FFIV is my all time personal favorite FF, then IX because it goes back to it's roots and medieval fantasy setting. Character and story driven, job specific characters, none of that ffii and ffiii 20 jobs that you pick crap. It's classic, the first true Final Fantasy imo.

This was the first one I played so it wins in my book.

Also, it's the last game in the series where characters simply always strike twice, except in the case of a ranged or musical (lol) weapon.

Or if you equip Yang with only one claw I guess but who's dumb enough to do that.

To my understanding they are hitting a hell of a lot more than twice.
