Back in the day I used to chat with tons of people! As time went on, I began to feel overwhelmed and social anxiety crept up on me oh-so-slowly, and began make super secret private accounts to hide on instead of my usual messenger accounts. Despite my hiding, I kindof miss the old meaning of chatting with friends, though. Before you could access a million social media sites to stay in touch with people, you had to engage with them to discover more about them, and I kindof miss that world.

The second point of this post being that I've been a member of this site for years, most notably for the past two years, and there are many of you who I've never had a one-on-one conversation with.

Chat in what way? Chat face to face? Chat over the phone? Chat on Facebook? Chat via VM? Chat via PM? Chat via #eoff?

I guess in generally, I don't really much, which is a great shame. I'd love to, but I'm an awful conversationalist and I don't like making the first move, even if just to initiate a friendly chat.

I don't know how others do it though, I randomly go view some people's Visitor messages sometimes and they have dozens just from the round of a day!

I don't use AIM anymore, but I had about 300 people on my list. I have no idea who half of them are anymore.

"Back in the day," I would come online and be messaged by 5 different people. Now, I have no idea how the smurf I managed to post -- or even do -- anything while talking on IM so much. I only talk to a few EoFFers outside of the forums anymore, and even for most of those it's irregular.

I also chat with EoFFers outside of the internet and I'd be okay with chatting with a few more. Back when I first started on this site I was super shy and kept most of my socializing through VM's and then I finally got MSN where I did a large majority of my socializing with EoFFers. Those days are long gone. Best ways to reach me are through FB, or if you know my number hit me up to hang out. ;)

Other than that I pop in to chat often. Not too terribly often cause I'm busy a lot but I try to hop in there to talk with the cool cats that visit it. I talk to shion a lot in private chats in chat. I usually talk to proto when in chat. Shion and proto mostly. Scotty too.

As for talking with others, I used to talk with them a lot. But.... well.... my ideals didn't mesh well with their ideals, and... they weren't very tolerant of that.... and I now just stay out of those for the most part.

I'd be better about chat, whether it's Facebook messenger or Skype (which is on 24/7 for me, by the way, on my phone) or text messages if I weren't such a social creature. Yeah, back in the day oldish school 2005/6 EoFF times, I had tons of members who I would literally chat to all the time on msn or what not. Used to have a good old time on chat also.
I have no idea how I managed to spam these forums to the point of near banning, talk on chat and talk to all these people on msn at the same time. All whilst listening to music/watching videos of the current internet crazes of the time. And play Final Fantasy games, and watch anime? Oh, back in the day.

I do miss that. I keep meaning to start logging into chat subtly, slowly, more and more until people don't realise that I never was actually in there in the first place.

I chat in Facebook every now and then and a few EoFFers IM me there on occasion. It's also the "home" for chat with the Fat Chocobos, both in terms of the leader group and the more active general chat group.

I chat with a bunch of EoFFers via WhatsApp every now and then, too.

I still use Y!M and AIM and occasionally chat with a few EoFFers on those systems, too, although it's becoming less and less often (Samuraid probably the most common one there).

I did this because I like to keep eoff & real life separate. I wouldn't want a bunch of people from my family, work or friends roaming around this place. I also didn't feel 100% comfortable having a bunch of people I'd never met and didn't know very well seeing everything on my Facebook.

I don't like phonecalls in general because I... just don't. I find them awkward. I never really speak to anybody on the phone ever.

I like chatting to people via PM's, though! I'll chat by PM/user notes with anybody, but I rarely start the conversation with people I don't know, because I'm a bit shy to begin with and never know what to say. I do message people I know on occasion for a chat! :jess:

The best starting points are Visitor Messages, Private Messages and #eoff, because those are places that don't require any stalking whatsoever. If you happen to be playing FFXIV on Sargatanas, there are a bunch of EoFFers in there, too, but the chat levels there can go up and down like crazy depending on the hour, the day and who happens to be on at the time (some people are far chattier than others).

After that, I would say the next most common way to get in touch with someone these days is through Facebook.

Just gonna say straight off: Nahhhhh. Many people might not be interested in having you add them, but there are a lot of ways they can either ignore your friend request or just politely say "Sorry, I prefer not to have EoFFers I'm not really close to on my friends list, it's nothing personal!" However, I know a lot of EoFFers that are constantly chatting on each other's Facebook statuses. If you want, I can ask on Facebook (I can restrict the question to EoFFers which I have in one nice big group) who wants to be added by you and you can pick and choose based on how well you know them! But yeah, Facebook is just Facebook and people should never get too worried about being on someone's list or off it, either.

I wouldn't say it's just you. I feel that way a lot of the time, too. I think it's down to a huge amount of things, from the rise of WhatsApp, Skype, Twitter, Facebook (and even international texting) to the demise of Y!M, AIM and MSN... and also just a case of an aging population within EoFF meaning people are generally busier than they were at the age of 16. There's also something I've always felt and that's that now that we're all meeting each other and seeing each other, we're part of each other's lives. It's no longer a group of friends who can chat online rather anonymously. Sometimes opening up can make people a little more nervous than it used to because if they open up, there is no easy escape. :p Still, I do think that there is a place for chat in today's world, and I'm actually kind of surprised it's lessened over the years considering smartphones should really increase the use. I suppose the negative part of that is that smartphones tend to be always-on and always-around, so getting messages at work can be annoying as hell at times so perhaps people are reluctant to give out their info.

I do miss the Y!M days though. I'd have about 10 chats going on at once and that would be my evening's enterainment. :D

You might not get added if you add someone you don't know very well, but it doesn't hurt to try!
