Why do people hate Gau so much? He's one of my favorites :flirt:

I think the two main reason people don't like him is...

1) He's not really important to the plot, even Sakaguchi and Kitase admit he's not important but kept him in because they liked him conceptually. Also, the wild child third-person speak is a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it type.

2) He is a giant Guide Dang it character. He's a pain to acquire all of his Rages, to understand how they work you need either to have a guide or do a tone of trial and error gameplay and he can be very time consuming to most newbie players. With that said, he's probably one of the most broken characters in the game hence why he is the only character to get nerfed in subsequent games.

Despite all this I love the little guy as well. He has a great character theme and he's funny. :ffvistrut:

He's not that difficult to use. Just give him Stray Cat (and, later, Grenade and Retainer) and let him wail away at enemies.

Definitely an underrated character.

The whole reason I didn't use him (and the old blue mage dude) was that both of them had skills I had to go out my way to get, and they offer no explanation to what they are. Pretty much the same reason I don't use Quinna. I'm sure I'm missing out, but other characters are just as good without being complicated.

I wonder sometimes if players aren't transferring some of Sabin's annoyance at Gau onto themselves. He really didn't like Gau the first time they met.

Characters like Celes, Edgar, Sabin etc are just so much more user-friendly.

I don't know about Guide Dang-It - it was fun just experimenting with the different Rages to see crazy stuff he'd get up to.

Gau is a cool character, whether or not he's plot relevant, and whether or not he's useful. His own personal narrative is great, and I think he's fucking hilarious.
