I was reading through an article which pointed out fan speculation that Shuyin is the original version of Tidus from the real Zanarkand:

The idea goes that the Fayth, the creators Dream Zanarkand, didn't get everything 100% right. They probably vaguely remembered Shuyin and created a close-but-not-perfect version of him in the dream, and that clone ultimately became Tidus

What do you think of that?

Makes sense. Would explain why they look so similar.

Tidus lives in the real world, Spira is the dream world.

I knew Yuna was too good to be true :smug:

I like to pretend that Japan is filled w/ Yuna-types. I'm sure it's not, but a man can dream.

I... thought this was true

So I guess I'm on board with the speculation then :monster:

Well yeah but then who is Dream Zanarkand's Lenne? You'd make a copy of her too, and a love like that would surely be something the Fayth would remember.

This theory has one (IMO fatal) flaw which is that Shuyin lived 1000 years before Tidus did. And since there's no reason to assume time wasn't flowing normally in Dream Zanarkand, that makes this connection impossible.

You can say that Shuyin might be an Tidus' ancestor though.

Or multiple copies of Shuyin have popped up in Zanarkand over the years in some form or another and Tidus is just the last in a long list.

No one important. After 1000 years and however many generations of people they had to think of, and no real fear of their dreaming having any impact on the rest of the world, they'd be free to take the template and write it in whatever direction they wanted. It's entirely possible that Tidus would've fallen in love with D!Lenne if it weren't for that meddling Auron.

It's also possible that she didn't exist in this particular iteration. Imagine trying to write Romeo and Juliet but removing the Juliet character. It takes real creativity to pull off something like that.

It's even just as likely possible that D!Lenne didn't play the role of love interest in Tidus' life, but was a friend. She could have also been killed when Sin came to visit in the opening sequences.

Actually, we can assume that time flows normally. They state it outright. I would argue that an explicit statement is reason enough.

I always thought this was official and was the point. Doesn't the game even say that?

I wouldn't trust Square Enix with canon, the company is almost as bad as George Lucas.

You mean Tidus is not based on Shuyin? that gives me yet another reason to not like that whiny little twit.

Jecht gotto be the dream version of Lenne considering the fact that Tidus spends most of his time chasing and pondering about Jecht in Spira like what Shuyin does.

The fayth has a real good sense of humour.
