Where do Adventurers come from?

Maybe I missed something in the lore but everyone talks about my character like he's not even from Eorzea. Also, how does everyone know, just by looking at him, that he is an adventure? Especially since a lot of the missions has him running around like a rich merchants errand boy.

I just figured that my character probably has that "give me something to do and get rewarded for" look on his face. Or that it'd be something like the way he's dressed for battle but also carrying a backpack around, or something.

I thought that, but until your like L20, your gear looks now cooler than the average guards and if your discipline of the hand or land then you'll bend right in with a lot of the npcs for longer than that.

In 2.0 and on, it's because you've been sent to the future from 1.0. You're still from Eorzea, kinda. They can probably tell that you're an adventurer because you're leaking magical energy. Thaumaturgical thermodynamics and all that.
