So I'm taking this class on Coursera right now called "How to Change the World" and it talks about various global issues and what people are doing to confront them. When we got to energy, this came up:

Soccket! (http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681514/this-soccer-ball-generates-energy-while-you-play-and-you-can-buy-it-now)

It's a bit older, but I haven't noticed anyone talking about this so I thought I'd share. I love this. :)

Wow, they should advertise this with all the world cup stuff going on. That's so nifty!

It all seems well and good now but these balls are far too clever and could one day take over the world :(

I hope this leads to a game called lightningball being invented as some kind of international blood sport

When I was watching the talk it was in the context of trying to solve issues of energy in places where electricity isn't readily available, but I'd imagine that instead of playing with the ball/electric generator that most people in a serious crisis would just shake the ball until they get power. :shobon:

Still, I love the idea of converting energy which otherwise goes unused into electricity. And soccer's pretty universal, so it has a pretty strong appeal already! :D

I want it just for the novelty factor.
