Isn't it weird how when you feel a bit down and people say "don't listen to sad songs, it'll only make you worse". True,I guess- but sometimes I wanna listen to sad songs!

When I was a teenager I used to listen to Damien Rice- The Blowers Daughter on repeat and cry my eyes out. At the moment, I'm partial to a bit of Lana Del Ray.

Which songs do you listen to when you feel low?

Coldplay. A few other bands that I can't think of right now. But they're sad

I don't cry much, but Tori Amos is always good for the sads. I also really enjoy Lana del Rey a lot for sad songs.

I cry far too much. It's ridiculous! I cry when I'm happy, I cry when I'm angry or sad! I wish there was an off button for tears! Especially as I look like a big tomato the minute the first tear escapes my eye. Not like the girls in films who look stunning mid cry-fest!

Plenty; but off the top of my head... this piano version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNo9PQrHU4U) of this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiJjABlmIsA) that appeared in a Japanese drama that made me cry nearly every episode.

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

And also All Good Things (Come to an End) - Nelly Furtado and pretty much anything by Jose Gonzalez. I listen to Blower's Daughter when I'm sad as well but also when I'm happy because it's just a great song.

"Jealous Guy" by John Lennon, for some reason, even though the lyrics aren't particularly sad.

I'll listen to any song that really hits me hard. For example, Bones, by the Young Guns, has a line that goes "I've seen down the end of the road, I deal in a different story, oh, I'll never let go again!", and, after having a history of suicidal thoughts and "overcoming" them, hearing those lyrics hit me like a truck.

Piano Music also always really makes me emotional: Isaac Shepard, for example. Leaves in the Wind, Gentle, Before Dawn, and Letting Go are all beautiful piano pieces that I use to listen to all the time when I was sad.

Bare with me on this one which is related to my faith - it's also a song that quickly became a favourite of my cousin who is absolutely not Christian, and I oddly don't associate them too heavily with my faith so much as the emotions that I feel the artist had when he put together these lyrics and this song. Not just a feeling of sadness, but a feeling of concession. For me, it's particularly a feeling I get when I feel defeated, demoralised, destroyed. The closing 'verse' of sorts is a plead with God, life or anything that one makes when this happens, just begging to have their world torn apart, to just crash. If anything, the first four lines dictate the entire situation that the person finds themselves in, and they feel that all that can be done at this point is to take their world apart and to wish for everything they know to just be shattered so they can just start fresh, despite knowing that can't simply happen and that life isn't that simple.

Anyway, the lyrics.

I am the only one to blame for this
Somehow it all ends up the same
Soaring on the wings of selfish pride
I flew too high and like Icarus I collide
With a world I try so hard to leave behind
To rid myself of all but love
to give and die

To turn away and not become
Another nail to pierce the skin of one who loves
More deeply than the oceans
More abundant than the tears
Of a world embracing every heartache

Can I be the one to sacrifice
Or grip the spear and watch the blood and water flow

To love you - take my world apart
To need you - I am on my knees
To love you - take my world apart
To need you - broken on my knees

All said and done I stand alone
Amongst remains of a life I should not own
It takes all I am to believe
In the mercy that covers me

Did you really have to die for me?
All I am for all you are
Because what I need and what I believe are worlds apart

I look beyond the empty cross
Forgetting what my life has cost
And wipe away the crimson stains
And dull the nails that still remain
More and more I need you now
I owe you more each passing hour
The battle between grace and pride
I gave up not so long ago
So steal my heart and take the pain
And wash the feet and cleanse my pride
Take the selfish, take the weak
And all the things I cannot hide
Take the beauty, take my tears
The sin-soaked heart and make it yours
Take my world all apart
Take it now, take it now
And serve the ones that I despise
Speak the words I can't deny
Watch the world I used to love
Fall to dust and thrown away
I look beyond the empty cross
Forgetting what my life has cost
So wipe away the crimson stains
And dull the nails that still remain
So steal my heart and take the pain
Take the selfish, take the weak
And all the things I cannot hide
Take the beauty, take my tears
Take my world apart, take my world apart
I pray, I pray, I pray
Take my world apart

Beyond that song... it largely depends on the mood. If I'm sad I might be in the mood for slow songs, depressing songs, angry songs or fast songs. Sometimes I intentionally try to pick myself up with happy music, which can work on occasion. What I listen to will, inevitably, be down to the situation I find myself in. I often listen to the entirety of Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right album when I'm sad. It was the first album I ever really got into, so it's just sort of comfortable to me. Helps lift my spirits a bit.

Aside from that, a song I find myself listening to a lot when I'm sad is Forget Me by BT.

Glad to see someone else on eoff that likes eyeshine.

A song that always gets me now, especially since my buddy died, has been "Fake Your Death" by My Chemical Romance. He had been in the hospital for a week, and this song was playing when I got the message at work that he had passed.

Hank Williams... Almost any of it.Good pick. For me the ultimate heartbreaker is basically anything from Antony & the Johnsons. Not great music for cheering up though, heh.
