View Full Version : The homophone agenda, or Clarke Woodger is dangerously stupid

Here's a sample lede for you:

[When a] social-media specialist for a private Provo-based English language learning center wrote a blog explaining homophones, he was let go for creating the perception that the school promoted a gay agenda.

My first reaction: I laughed. Because that has to be a parody.

But no, this was a Salt Lake Tribune (http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/58236366-90/says-english-homophones-language.html.csp) article, which has been picked up (http://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-strategist-fired-after-blogging-about-homophones-2014-7) by other sources (http://www.newsweek.com/education-blogger-fired-writing-about-homophones-and-confusing-homophobes-262404). (I am still about half-sure that this was a satire piece that no one's caught onto yet)

Of course this happened in Utah. The blogger's boss denies that mindless bigotry and stupidity were behind the firing, but that was belied somewhat by this choice quote:

"People at this level of English," Woodger says, " … may see the ‘homo’ side and think it has something to do with gay sex."

That reminded me of a quote from one of my favorite blogs, Popehat:

Some behavior does not merely show bad character. It displays a level of stupidity so alarming as to render the bad character secondary. It raises a serious question as to whether emergency personnel should be rushed to the scene to equip the subject with a ventilator in case he forgets to breathe.

What examples of stupidity have you encountered that are so abjectly stupid they make you wonder how these people managed to tie their shoes in the morning?

I was just reading about a guy who set himself on fire and told the nurse he didn't think it would hurt so much. He set himself on fire ON PURPOSE! Because he thought it would be funny. What the smurf?

Do people not learn what a homophone is in like grade 2?

I saw a few people do the stick your tongue on a frozen pole despite being told not to because....

No reason :|

That one tickled me in all of the wrong places. God also gave us chlorine, and rattle snakes. People who use this argument can feel free to breathe the former and play with the latter.

Only gay ones.

One guy I know seems to think you can get aids from a gay guy if he so much as coughs on you. Does that count?

When you consider gayness so offensive that a word that doesn't even remotely sound like "homosexual" gets a guy fired, your ideas about what's offensive and what's not are pretty obviously in need of some reformation.

I'd say this is the dumbest thing I've heard about.

Not as disturbing as the others, but but very sad. Now we know who is voting for the idiots in Vivi' post. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88tWn26bh3M)

It's old now, but still interesting for those who haven't seen it. Al cooper debates Al Melvin ( Senator for Arizona) on their religious freedom law they passed. The parts shown take place from :20-5:20 in the video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH7qyp0GW3Y)

That first video reminds me of Talking to Americans.

And that Anderson Cooper interview in the second video was both appalling for that man's beliefs and ducking the questions, and also somewhat enjoyable for Anderson not backing down and calling him on his bullshit.

I'm sad to say that this isn't even close to the dumbest thing I've ever heard...
