Highscore Challenge - Eyes on Final Fantasy 2048 - WINNER REVEALED

Greetings Nerds and Nerdettes!

After a month Hiatus we're back and playing another round of Highscore challenge. This time I've opted for something relatively simple and we'll be playing Eyes on Final Fantasy 2048.

2048 is a numbers game where you slide tiles around a board combining them in order, doubling them in size. This continues until you reach the 2048 tile. Here on EoFF, we're doing it differently! All the tiles are final fantasy related!



Here's how to play:
1. Go to this webpage (http://games.usvsth3m.com/2048/eyes-on-final-fantasy-edition-edition/)
2. Aim of the game is to combine the two of a similar image to create the next item in the series. So for example 2x FFI = 1x FFII / 2x FFVII = FFVIII etc. The game is over when you either reach the final tile, or run out of possible moves. If you still don't understand how to play, try playing the original first to get an idea of how the game works (http://gabrielecirulli.github.io/2048/)
3. When you can't make any more moves, take a screenshot of the score and post it here.



It's as simple as that. The 2048 tile is special though, as it is specifically EoFF related. The first person to find what that tile is will get a high five or something. - Psychotic is due a high five as he was the first player to find the Looney Bob tile.

I got got a score of 300 by swiping randomly and don't ever intend on playing again. Back to Infamous: Second Son for me.

FF2(4) + FF2(4) = FF3(8)
FF3(8) + FF3(8) = FF4(16)
...
FFX (1028) + FFX (1028) = Happy Bob (2048) and win.

If you want to practice before playing, the original (http://gabrielecirulli.github.io/2048/) makes a lot more sense. Try playing it first if you're not sure on the rules.

Protip guys: Pick a corner and, for the love of god, make sure the highest tile stays in that corner. Next, pick a direction and, for the love of god, make sure the other tiles flow in that direction, with the largest closest to the corner tile.

I'm curious. Since the game can not be carried on after you hit the win, is it a "highest score wins" or "lowest scores wins" for those who actually complete the game?

Sort of. I mean, it's two different kinds of difficulties, really. Lower 'win' scores mean you have achieved it in fewer turns, which requires a fair bit of skill, but equally to get a really high score could require sacrificing many chances to win in order to bump up your score and thus be seen as a trickier thing to do. I imagine there is an "average" score that is easiest and then you could argue that both relatively high scores and relatively low scores are equally impressive. Provided you reached 2048, of course.

In my OP, the score received when the player got the 2048 tile was 20,392. Our first finisher was psychotic with a score of 21,052. This means to me that the scores can differ from player to player.

This one went all kinds of screwed up but I got there in the end. And because it went all kinds of screwed up... new top score! Finally beat that darned Psychotic guy. And now I can actually enjoy the game by being able to win efficiently without getting annoyed at myself for it. Yay!

And here I thought that I would never play 2048 after beating it a couple months ago. :p Once you know how to beat it, then beating it is pretty easy. the only reason it's not a higher score is because I didn't know the game would end when I got the BoB tile.

The trick is to only go in three directions. I never once went down on the run I submitted, and you can see I could have continued the game for a lot longer if the game didn't end once I got the tile. What ends up happening is you have your bigger tiles together, and you can manipulate the smaller ones in the bottom rows then slide them up when they are ready. Then all you need is a little luck. :p

I tend to work towards the lower right corner, stacking high numbers on the right side. Looked around the web for something that best covered my strategy and I suppose this will do to start...

...and if things go bad for any reason, I work in two directions (top and bottom). Perhaps I'll YouTube it or something someday, it basically involves lacking any sense of panic and instead selectively working the FF1's up and down along the left depending on what will favour me most. This leads to almost every move getting 1-2 merges and helps clear up the board in quick time. I've had a full board before and still managed to get it all the way down to about 3-4 tiles using this method. It doesn't always work, of course, but it's the best "disaster recovery" strategy I've stumbled across.

Yeah, I didn't really look up any methods but that's pretty much what I did. Keep it all on the bottom row - and then bottom two rows once you start building up a head of steam - unless it all starts going to Hell.

First thing I did when I booted up this morning was try Qwertysaur's strategy & nearly doubled my highest score. Basically, my biggest mistake before was not keeping things to one side. I would for quite a while, then I'd shift it in the other direction. Now I know that's where I was screwing up. Thanks guys.
