when you power it on, hold the control button down (do this before the apple pops up) it should open the apple diagnostics tool for you.

What version of Mac OSX are you running, MissH?

I thought this was going to be about Dan McNeil.

What colour is the light on your charger when you plug it in?

It might have overheated when you we letting it charge for that long. The hard drives in the Macs are purposely frail when you first get them. I hope you got insurance because it seems you'll have to repair your hard drive for a better one that should have been put in to begin with.

Worst case scenario following Shiny's hypothesis is that you go out and buy your own harddrive and download the version of OSX that you want onto a flash drive and do a fresh install of OS.

Also invest in this and place it under your laptop if you're charging for long periods of time: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-Ultra-Slim-R9-NBC-XSLI-GP/dp/B005C31HC0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1408579082&sr=1-1&keywords=laptop+fan

What year and how old is it? There was a well known bug in the Mid 2011 MacBook Pro's that freeze up after a firmware update.

I'd just take it to the Genius Bar. Expensive, if out of warranty, but they know their own stuff.
