The Equipment system

This is only really valid with the NES version as most of the ports and remakes update the equipment system to more modern sensibilities but did anyone else accidentally discover the hard way the difference between having the equipment and equipping the gear? In my first playthrough I was wondering why I was getting my ass kicked so badly despite upgrading everyone's gear and yet didn't notice a difference.

The instruction manual made a big deal out of making sure you had things equipped.

Only for the first level or two until I figured out what was going on.

I don't remember having this problem, but I DO remember not having any idea what gear was better than whatever other gear, or who could use what, so I wasted a ton of money in each town buying everything.

This is one of the reasons I want to get it complete in box.
