Have you ever wanted to play Final Fantasy XIV, but you just didn't have the funds? Or perhaps you have the funds, but you're unsure whether or not you want to invest in an MMO without trying it out first? Square Enix is putting those worries at ease with a free 14-day trial (http://www.ffxiv-freetrial.com/en/) for gamers with a Windows PC.

The free trial gives you a small taste of what you can expect in Eorzea, allowing you to immerse your character into the world up to level 20. There are certain restrictions (http://support.na.square-enix.com/faqarticle.php?id=5382&la=1&kid=70929&ret=main), such as not being able to join a Free Company and having a currency cap of 20,000 gil, however, these restrictions should do nothing to hinder the enjoyable experience of a 2 week trial.

For those of you who have been long term subscribers of the game, Square Enix have recently announced the "Recruit a Friend" campaign (http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/special/friend_recruit/). Invite your friends by use of the Mog Station (https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/Login?cont=account&request=mogstation), and both parties will receive in-game rewards for mutual days subscribed!

If a friend of yours subscribes for 30 days, you will each receive a Friendship Circlet which increases the EXP earned for your character by 20% if they are under level 25. Additionally, the veteran player will receive an Aetheryte Pendulum which will allow them to teleport near new adventurers on their friends list at no cost.

If the person who was invited to play subscribes for 90 days, the veteran player will receive a whistle that allows them to summon a chocobo that accommodates 2 passengers.

If you've been curious about A Realm Reborn but weren't sure when to jump in, now's the time. Download the client (http://www.ffxiv-freetrial.com/en/) and see what over 2 million people around the globe have been raving about!

Yes! Finally I can try. I will get to it tomorrow when I get home.

I don't get why the trials are so short. They should never be time limited, just level limited. Limit level and quests to 30, allowing people to get the huge cock-tease that classic jobs are, which are unlocked at 30, but require a full subscription to play with them.

I refuse to play any MMO for any length of time unless it's F2P.

F2P for half a month, Vivi. Give it a chance, you'll like it

How big's the download/install? I've kinda avoided The Old Republic which is the MMO I want to play more than any other, but I've avoided it upon hearing it's like 30 gigs..

Oh don't worry, ARR is only 11 GB.

F2P for half a month doesn't cut it for me. I won't play anything else because I can't afford to get sucked in.

why can't you afford to get sucked in?

Well I tested a very little of the game. So far I've got to the first quest from the adventurer guild's master and got kinda stuck haha.

The game looks fabulous but it's really intimidating. It's so goddamn big I dunno where to start x_x

Also do you recommend using gamepad or keyboard? So far I've used the gamepad but it seems like it would be hard to use it later on with all the skills and stuff.

The game tells you where to start

There's a lot of controller-hate floating around (I've heard some hardcore jp FCs are booting/refusing people if they use a controller), but there's also the fact that the world's first solo-heal T9 kill was by a scholar using a controller. I personally think a keyboard and mouse is much easier and allows a lot more flexibility in customising your UI (and a whole lot more keybinds too), but we have a bunch of people in the FC who swear by controllers too. So really, just use what you like, the game is really accessible to both.

Btw, which server did you start a character on, Ergroilnin?

I see I tried to play with controller right of the bat but it seems that keyboard+mouse would definitely be more playable for me.

I started on Phoenix but besides yesterday's try I didn't log in again yet. I will though try it out more before my free trial passes.

Also I love your signature.

Well if you want to play with anyone from this place, you'll have to change to Sargatanas. At your point in the game, just re-rolling is probably the way to go, as a server transfer of an existing character costs 15 bucks.

Well sice it's NA server I guess nope. I don't like worse latency.

Spoiler: EU servers are also in the US. They're all somewhere near New York. Just do a geolocation on the server IP you connect to and you'll see.

Well, they're in Canada. :p But yeah, they're definitely not in Europe.

If you want to make a new character (or transfer) on Sargatanas, we've got a spot for you in the FC! I think you need to subscribe before it'll let you join a FC, but you can still join the LS while on a trial.

Well then I will try Sargatanas later. I won't probably have mood and time for playing before sunday. Still even though I may in the end decide to stick with FFXIV, it won't be for quite some time. No munniez

Why can't this work on ps3?

Does the forum have a place to post codes? Probably a good way to get people to jump into the game and give veteran players a chance to get some of the stuff SE is giving out.
