No, this isn't for me. I watch enough movies. This is actually for my boyfriend who to my surprise has not seen a majority of movies that aren't present (like within the past five years). I'm not really the best at times at picking movies for other people because I like and even love so many, so if you can recommend me some movies for him -- anything older than 2008 I'd be much obliged.

Already on my list of things for him to watch that he's never seen:

Psycho (the original)
Sin City

blackmage_nuke
08-11-2014, 05:23 AM
Fifth Element
Mean Girls
Lord of the Rings
are some casual fun favourites

But if he is the type of person who appreciates Inception level complexity or the genre variety of Cloud Atlas then I highly recomend Mr Nobody.

Something you can do is find out what new movies he likes and find movies with the same director/writer

On the Waterfront
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Everything is Illuminated
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
Into the Wild
Big Fish (which I am currently downloading
Up in the Air (2009, still worth watching if he hasn't)
Requiem for a Dream
Dick Tracy because I FUCKING LOVE DICK TRACY
Dark City
Wristcutters
Cecil B. Demented
American Psycho
Battle Royale
Chinatown
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Magnolia
The Vengeance series
Paris, Je T'Aime
The Road
Lost in Translation
The Machinist
Breakfast on Pluto
Happythankyoumoreplease
Match Point
Closer
Away We Go
V for Vendetta
Lucky Number Slevin
Lars and the Real Girl - I liked this, I guess some others didn't quite so much
Son of Rambow
Burn After Reading
Let the Right One In
Milk
Planet Terror/Grindhouse
Rec
High Tension
Marytrs
Audition
of course all of wes anderson's movies
and finally Legend, because fuck you to whoever has never seen Tom Cruise in a movie about unicorns before :mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2:

I tried to stick to mostly 2000's movies because if he hasn't seen much other than in the last five years, I'd say he might not be a fan of older stuff.

Legend wins my vote lol

On that note, The Princess Bride. Labyrinth. And The Dark Crystal

What does your boyfriend even like? lol

I would say the more people who watch and enjoy Donnie Darko the better. Also Brick is a good one that I love to pop in from time to time. Same with Penelope

Total Recall (Arnold version)
Any old Miyazaki movie
The Matrix (original, the sequels are debatable, though I enjoyed the second one, I think everyone should watch the first one)
Memento
Fight Club
Alien(s)
Any old Pixar movies
Jurassic Park
The Land Before Time
The Black Cauldron

This is hard. I'm going to pull out my hard drive. I spent a few years downloading my favorite movies
Enemy of the State
Event Horizon
Hancock (Is that old enough? I don't know when it came out. Loved the movie though)
Independence Day
Hook
Hitch
Interview with the Vampire
Slither
The Crow
The Goonies
The Monster Squad
Unleashed
Equilibrium
Pandorum
Sunshine
The Faculty

Well, that hard drive didn't help quite as much as I thought it would. So I guess I'll stop there for now

I suggest Netflix or something if you don't already have it, otherwise this can get expensive or illegal xD

Edit: Just remembered. Everybody needs to see Moon. For only having like ... two actors, it's ridiculously good

Can't argue with Vyk's recommendations of the Matrix, Memento, Equilibrium or Fight Club.

Some of my favourite films;
Catch Me If You Can
The Departed (or the Hong Kong original, Infernal Affairs, for that matter)
Casino Royale

Goodies from my hard drive;
(500) Days of Summer
American History X
Anchorman
Cloverfield
Daybreakers (2009 film, but had a pretty limited release, so I don't know if you missed it. Vampire flick, but the good kind)
Deception
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Gladiator
I am Legend (controversial ending aside, still good watching)
Match Point
Mortal Kombat (because why the smurf not)
Slumdog Millionaire
Starship Troopers
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Prestige
Tropic Thunder
V for Vendetta
Zoolander

A Knight's Tale
Batman (1989)
Batman Returns
Beetlejuice
Blue Brothers
Constantine
Dragonheart
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters 2
Hellboy
Men in Black
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
The Neverending Story
Underworld
Van Helsing
X-Men
X-Men 2

I'm not a movie fan at all, but there is some that I absolutely loved. I'm not gonna include comedies because everyones humour is different (Freddy Got Fingered is the funniest piece of television I have ever witnessed). If you haven't seen them, I'd recommend:

The Shawshank Redemption (obviously, but I think you have seen this already and you had better shown him by now :) )
12 Angry Men
The Apartment
The Matrix (the original was a complete film, the sequels I didn't get)
District 9
Big Fish
Dead Man's Shoes (you can watch this on YouTube)
The Blair Witch Project (I'm not into horrors and this wasn't like a Scream movie where a guy jumps out of a closet and frightens the trout out of you, it was just spooky)
Avatar (which everyone has seen)

I could go on but those are what I'd recommend. I know for a fact that anyone within reason would have a an amazing time looking at them. :spin:

There's a specific version of Dark City you'd want to watch though, and I believe it's probably the director's cut. But whichever it is, be aware that ONE of them opens with a narration that completely spoils the ending for some dumbass reason. I learned of this after watching the one that did not have this, and while looking at posts about it learned that the movie experience was totally ruined for a lot of people :(

chionos
08-11-2014, 11:26 PM
The director's cut is sans the opening narration, so that's the one you want to see. The opening narration was added in post-production as an afterthought by the bigwigs to make the movie more accessible, but as any fan of DC knows, its "inaccessibility" is what makes it interesting and beautiful.

Godfather and Godfather 2.

As much as he should, he will never watch those. He hates gang related films.

I said older than 2008 and I am pretty sure he as seen both.

I actually got him to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fifth Element, and Labyrinth already. He loved them all. He said smurf no to Shawshank though. :(

Out of these lists he's also seen The Matrix, The Goonies (any one born is the 80s and 90s has seen this) Tropic Thunder, Zoolander, Ghostbusters (the first one only apparently) Jurassic Park, Mortal Kombat, all Pixar movies, all Will Smith movies, all the Underworld movies, and all the super hero movies listed. That's actually really sad. What has he been doing for years?!

I will start off with Dark City, because I actually haven't seen that either and it's been on my to-watch-list since 2008. xD Thanks all! Keep 'em comin'.

After Dark City, whatever you think about him, you should watch a Robin Williams movie. I'll recommend which one in an edit. Just because.

EDIT:
If you don't (or he doesn't) like Williams' particular brand of tomfoolery, he's also been in quite a few movies in which he doesn't play himself (go figure, right?).

Of those, I'd recommend:
What Dreams May Come**
Dead Poets Society***
Bicentennial Man**
The Fisher King***
The World According to Garp**

I've always hated that he got type-casted like Jim Carey. Maybe he should have teamed up with Adam Sandler who also got tired of the type-casting, made his own studio, used the type-casting to his advantage, and then landed in Spanglish. Which was a phenomenally well done departure

I know Williams was in things like One Hour Photo and Good Will Hunting. But sadly I haven't seen any of those, and nobody I know has seen any of that stuff. His deviations are not readily available and I hate that. I'm gonna freakin pirate some Robin Williams movies or something >.> And maybe Spanglish

Tom Cruise is a great actor. Magnolia is a testament to that. Eyes Wide Shut wasn't bad either.

I've seen a lot of his films over the years, and I actually just re-watched One Hour Photo last night. His performance is really really good but the movie really isn't anything spectacular. Good Will Hunting is a classic if you can get past some of it's pretentiousness and Ben Affleck, ew. Excellent writing that. Insomnia was also interesting, I saw it years ago so I can't remember entirely if it was good or not but it was kind of weird seeing him be a villain. I think he's better at playing a side kick or hero like in Jumanji.

Also, the anime Metropolis is based on an unfinished manga by Osama Tezuka which itself was based on the original silent film. It is pretty different from the original but its still a damn good movie.

I'd say give Dreams another shot since its a collection of short stories. If you start to get bored with one then just move on to the next one. Its a great film about Japanese culture and Akira Kurosowa's feelings about his home.

The Artist is actually well done because well, its a silent movies about the death of silent films, it was pretty clever and kind of showed of the power of an old style of film making.

I have seen many silent films and watched them all the way through. I don't like them. I respect what Nosferatu and Metropolis was and can even some what enjoy them but not hearing people takes away a large portion of my interest and emotional investment. I also don't like how they have to over exaggerate to compensate for the fact that you can't hear them. This is why I can only stomach comedic silent films because the exaggeration is more so for the laugh.

Ink is really good if you're in the mood for it. It's a slow burn, but I was in awe as it burned. It's about these things/people who watch over the dreams of children, and some thing evil steals one of the children while they're delivering a dream and they have to go save her before she gets sacrificed to other more evil things. It's hard to explain without giving away huge plot points though. Super duper suggest just watching it as blindly as you can. I went in without knowing anything and adored it. It actually manages to touch on a lot of real dramatic parts of people's lives
