View Full Version : NFL General Thread 2014 Season

We had a thread like this a couple of years ago or so, and I think it would be a good idea to have another one this season. Talk about how you feel about your current team, players you like/dislike, games you thought were fun to watch, stuff you are looking forward to, etc. I'll get the ball rolling.
Bears vs Bills: As a Bear fan it sucks that we lost our first game, especially when they made boneheaded play calling on offense and Chris Conte still thinks the the NFL plays by touch football rules. It was a tough loss, but not the whole doom and gloom situation Chicago fans think to seem it is (all Chicago fans expect there to be a doom and gloom season if we don't win any game by at least 100 points). Every year fans seem to forget that if the Bears do get hot, they start to come together a few weeks in the season. The past couple of years the Bears have had very lucky wins (and wins that should not have even happened) early on, so fans are used to a comfortable 3-0 or 2-1 start or something. I'm not saying they'll make the playoffs nor am I denying the MASSIVE problems with defense and the ever so struggling offensive line (though it looked better than other early season games).
Monday Night Football: I was looking forward to Giants vs Lions more so than the Chargers vs Cardinals. While it was amusing seeing the Lions make some great plays with Megatron, it was obvious that the Lions had that one in the bag early on. There are times I have no idea how Eli Manning has two Superbowl rings.
The Chargers and Cardinals looked like it would be a boring game in the first half, and that they would get in a boring occasional field goal war like they did during the pre season. However, the second half had some key plays and dramatics turns in it. Rivers blew it by missing a snap was huge in terms of their eventual loss, but Arizona's defense did an outstanding job that game for the most part. Carson Palmer looked pretty good and made some smart plays instead of trying to look like a stud with every pass, which is a pitfall many QBs fall into. Anyway, I found myself enjoying the game immensely despite the fact that I was sure it was going to be a snoozer. Glad I stuck around and watch the second half.

I won't deny that I laughed my ass off when I first saw this, but I have to wonder what some players are thinking sometimes.

haha I loved the spartan kick!
Having roommates who are heavy into football, I have gained some interest in this years college season. I lost it when the Gamecocks almost lost to the Pirates. Didn't think I would get that sucked into sports again. So I'm going to try to watch more of the NFL season.
Only bad thing is...I'm a Carolina Panthers fan... ;_;. Hopefully we will have a good year. We'll see.
I'm also interested in Fantasy Football but I know NOTHING about it.

Hopefully I'll be able to catch a Titans game or 2 this season whilst living in NY.
I looked at their roster though and only recognized 2 names- Jake Locker & Michael Oher.
When the hell did Michael Oher go to TN?

The Bears game was horrendous. They should've scored 40 against the Bills. Instead, Cutler played like a twerp & Conte should be gone. I can't imagine Sunday night's game to be anything but terrible.

Pretty much we should have had at least 34 points. That first pick wasn't really a horrible throw or anything. Forte was good as always. I'm not in the get rid of Conte group only because he's not terrible and there really aren't any other options out there. Yes he got stiff armed by Jackson but, he also had a nice interception and for the most part was good on his tackles.

There were two 3rd & 1 situations in that game that they opted to pass and screw it all up. Forte was running great all game and they don't want to use him then. WHY?! Conte made a great play, yeah, but he still can't tackle. He literally reminds me of a 1st year High School player that's a little jumpy and is hesitant to tackle because he is afraid he might hurt himself or something. I have no clue how that guy made it in the NFL.
At least we don't have Webb anymore. I might be remembering things wrong, but I think all he did was sit down and eat ice cream when he was on the field.
Also, whenever we have a tough loss I remember we used to have players such as Rashad Salam and feel better about the current team. I actually once completely ruined my friend's day by mentioning Rashad Salam. I'm serious. I said his name and nothing else and he was in a bad mood for awhile. This happened this year.

the patriots lost and that is awesome
the one thing i dislike about living in albany again is that the "local" teams are the giants/jets/bills so i get to see a bunch of shitty games (though i may recant if the bills continue to do OK. still, the giants and jets)
i won in both my fantasy leagues and that's pretty cool too (especially felt good in the one where i got the league's worst draft grade and had the highest-scoring week 1 team)

What a terrible week 1 for the Packers. So many problems on the line (granted two injuries) and the defense does not look any better. I really hated the play calling on offense as it didn't take the Seahawks long to figure out that the ball isn't going to come anywhere near Richard Sherman. Aaron Rodgers can't cover up for all of those problems on his own.
Good to have the NFL back!

He is only a few months removed from shoulder surgery and that was a big issue for him tackling last year. He at least was coming up and making hits with his shoulder against the bills.
I too am glad Webb and all of that nonsense are gone. It was fun watching Tice coaching the Falcons line and being happy that wasn't the Bears line lol.

I am glad we spoiled the home/stadium opener for them. I have nothing agianst the Niners (I have always liked a lot of players of theirs growing up). I DO have something against Kaepernick, or rather, how he is perceived.
My problem is how Kaepernick debuted against an injured Bears team a couple of seasons back and how they got crushed, and THE ENTIRE SPORTS MEDIA acted like he was the second coming of Christ for having a good game. The dude is a SUPREMELY overrated QB, and that muscle kiss BS the most douche bag thing you can do.
Before anything thinks I am taking it too personal because of the spark of his popularity because of the Bears blowing it a couple of seasons back, let me tell you that I feel (aside from the douche bag things he does) exactly how I felt about former Bears QB Rex Grossman. They are both capable of making amazing plays, but far more capable of making poor decisions on the field. The thing that pisses me off about Kaepernick is that he is totally immune from criticism, it seems.
Anyway, as for the Bears, that first half was terrible, but it was awesome to see them get their act together and see the defense, new guys and old, step up while Cutler and Marshall KILLED it.

My aunt had recorded it, but it cut off because they were @ some thing w/ her in-laws, so they didn't get the whole game. She does have the rest of the playoffs, though.
My family actually had season tickets back then. I think my Mom went to the Rams game.

Nice. My parents have had season tickets for a number of years now, but this might be the last season we have them (they are just getting too expensive). They didn't have them for the 85 Bears, but my parents managed to see 3 or 4 games that season. I am not sure if I were with them any of those times or not, but if not, I did see the Bears for sure at least a season or two after that.

Exciting MNF game with the Eagles at the Colts. So far this season's theme is to have a boring first half followed by an exciting and close second half. I have no strong feelings one way or another for either team, but I once again found myself having fun watching an exciting second half of prime time football.
As far as the actual game portion of the NFL goes, it is shaping up to be a fun season already!

Consider yourself lucky then. Eli actually played well but he got let down by his skill players. Also, can we finally admit we need a new special teams coach? I feel like every year we get our heart ripped out by a punt return.

With any luck at the end of the season Mike McCarthy will be fired and with him goes Dom Capers and the terrible conditioning staff the Packers have. Right now the Defense is terrible and the O-Line is terrible. You can't expect Lacy to tear it up if the line can't open any holes to run through.
That said, they got lucky on that blown timeout call. The game would have been tied and I don't have enough faith in the team to stop a terrible QB like Geno Smith forever. It could have ended in tied game...second one in two years it would have been. Whatever. The season is still young and the Packers can still win this pitiful division. The Vikings are now clearly going to be in last place so we have that going for us =D

On a positive note, my Bengals are looking fantastic. They're not the best in any one position (AJ Green aside), but man they're just good across the board. Marvin Lewis has finally turned them into a defensive-minded team, and it's working. They could be the team to beat this year. (I've been waiting 20 years to say that again)

Derreck Sherrod is currently starting in place of Bulaga and the Rookie Center is being made to look far better than he is with two good guards in TJ Lang and Josh Sitton. TJ Lang is being force to try and make up for being sandwiched inbetween two inexperienced linemen and I think it currently shows. Unfortunatly both Sherrod and Linsley where unforunatly thrust into the spot light after both Tretter went down in preseason week 3 and Bulaga week 1. I am not saying it can't come together as the Pack should get back Bulaga this week or next week and Tretter no long afterwards. Against two good defenses in the Jets and Seahawks, that in experience was greatly taken advantage of.
If Bulaga was in there then it would have been much better as the focus could be on the Rookie in the middle but Sherrod let so many people through in Week 1 and got better in Week 2. While basically the same, I think the dual injuries forced too much inexperience too soon, too fast :/

I would love to talk to Bear fans right now that insisted that it was a bad idea to let go of Lovie Smith and/or take McCown over Cutler.
Please, enlighten me. As I type this the score is 0-35 with the Falcons in the lead.
EDIT:
0-42 when I opened up this thread. Bucs botch snap. Falcons score again. 0-49.
This is the funniest and saddest game I've ever seen.
EDIT2: This is the funniest subreddit on the planet right now: http://www.reddit.com/r/buccaneers
EDIT3: The ref just misspoke a penalty. "Unnecessary Refness." I can't breathe.

I think, as much as this shows how bad the Bucs are, what we're really seeing is how good Atlanta is this year. Which means that the Bengals beating Atlanta last week was legit. Atlanta is this good. Cinci's just that much better. I don't think people realize yet how good they are, especially defensively.
The highlights from this game are pretty fun. I'm not a Lovie-hater, but man, the look on his face on the sideline is funny as hell. I've never seen any kind of coach in the NFL look so lost and confused. You almost feel sorry for him.
As far as McCown vs Cutler goes, I think they're both bad quarterbacks. I mean, not NFL-caliber starters anyway. Cutler's so damned inconsistent. That said, I don't know who in their right mind would want McCown over Cutler.
PS It's good to see the Falcon's taking advantage of Hester's unique skillset.

Well, another road win for the Bears. It wasn't pretty, but I'll always take a win.
Despite the positive things going on with the Bears and how bad the Packers look in some aspects, I am not to confident in the Bears beating them in week 4. Their secondary is...uh...is a thing that Aaron Rodgers will laugh at burn to the ground, basically.

I dunno Fuller has been playing well, Frey played nickle vs the Packers twice last year. If Mundy and Conte are able to play the secondary should be ok. If not I wonder if the Bears will bring in Adrian Wilson again. He's not gonna make big plays since he's old and slow but, he wont make mental mistakes that rookies will. And the front 7 has really stepped up. Willie Young looks like a beast so far and the rookie DTs have been doing a nice job.

Allen has lacked the numbers but it really showed how much we miss him out there. Same with Ratliff. Ferguson and Sutten did well against the Jets but they weren't able to get much of any pressure vs a beat up Packer line.
Also 2 or 3 long drives that end up with no points aren't going to help at all :(
